“2 couples sharing - roomy and excellent value”
Reviewed July 24, 2010

Quite a large apartment on 2 levels with toilet facilities upstairs and down. Plenty of room for 4 adults.
I agree with the positive comments made about Laura, nothing seemed too much trouble.
Although there was no air-con’ there was always a light cooling breeze in the evenings and as we were out for most of each day the lack of air-con’ didn’t prove to be a problem. The furnishings were a little dated but the apartment was very well equipped.

A day in the next resort Alvor (cost of 6 Euro for a taxi) was worth a visit, and a small bar called ‘The Chill Out Bar’ is highly recommended for its LARGE snacks which were perfectly cooked and presented, they also had the cheapest alcoholic drinks that we found locally.

This was a great ‘chill’ holiday. Ideal if you feel need to spend some time relaxing on a beach.
We found food and drink prices to be slightly below that of the UK, and there are lots of local restaurants to choose from (though the menus in most were very similar).

12.07.10 Just returned from this hotel. The lady who run's it is called Laura and she and her staff couldn't be more friendly and helpful. The room was spotless when we arrived and it was cleaned and towels changed almost every other day.
It was self catering but there is a big cheap supermarket fifteen mins walk from the flat. The beach is ten mins walk. As is the main shopping and eating area. The standard of resturant was high. We never ate a poor meal our whole trip. Try a place called All Beef and the two American themed resturants on the main street. They were really good.
Portimao is twenty five mins walk but is well worth a visit. Loads a great shops and it seems a little cheaper than Prada Rocha.
If I had to criticize anything it would be the number of sunbed's available. A few more wouldn't go a miss.
Would we go there again? Definely, it was quiet and nothing was too much trouble when you asked for help.

I have recently returned from a week staying at the Castelos Da Rocha.

On arriving at the hotel Laura and her family could not do enough for us, it was a lovely start to the holiday.

The apartment that we had faced a back road so the view was poor, but in return for that it stayed lovely and cool all day (I understand that those with a pool view had the afternoon sun on them so got very warm without the benefit of air conditioning).

The decoration and furniture was tired and could definitely do with some sprucing up, but all in all these apartments offer excellent value for money. They were clean, comfortable with plenty of space and located a perfect distance from the town.

If you are looking for a week in the lap of luxury these apartments are not for you, but I would return and would recommend them to a friend.

It was a great place to stay. Far bigger apartments than we had expected and fine for 4 adults. The furnishings could do with a bit of modenisation but they do they job.
As most people before have said Laura is a gem and will do anything she can to make you feel welcome and comfortable.
We visited 'the strip' each night, which is a couple of minutes walk away. Nice not to be pestered continuously about going into different bars. Irelands Eye bar was a particular favourite of ours with Brian singing live each night!
The beach is a few minutes away but be aware there are alot of steps down to the sand. Be sure to walk along the beach as there are some beautiful rock formations.
The pool, pool area & snack bar at Castelos da Rocha are kept clean and were fairly quiet while we were there.
A definate must is also the beach club down near the marina - lush! If it's quiet they do not charge you entry.

May 2010
12 Irish golfers just back from a very enjoyable holiday at the Castelos da Rocha, Apartments in Praia da Rocha.
Spacious, well-equipped and clean apartments. Even though we had only booked 1-bedroom apartments some of us were given 2 bedroom apartments. Good sized bedrooms, (up a spiral staircase) both with double beds and a bathroom shared. Kitchen had everything we required, kettle, toaster, oven and hob, fridge/freezer and even a washing machine. Maid service was 5 times a week and towels were changed three times.
Apartment was quiet; being slightly back from the seafront meant there was no noise from the many bars and restaurants. Yet it is only a 3-minute walk to the bars, restaurants and the beach, which is lovely.
Every thing that has been said about Laura is true and more.
Friendly and helpful in the extreme and Maria in the poolside bar is equally as friendly and helpful. Organized her son and his girlfriend to bring us to a restaurant one night it rained heavily and organized a birthday cake for us another night.
It’s an excellent location for golfers as it’s only 15-20 min drive from several courses.
Played Morgado - good, Alamos – fair, Boavista – excellent, Gramacho – short but brilliant greens, Alto – tight but good.
Food in Praia da Rocha is much cheaper than Vilamoura or Albufeira.
Went to Clair’s one night – cheep and cheerful. The best by far is Squash, which is 3 streets back off the strip, (across from Daly’s Irish bar –rough kip-) it’s a bit more expensive but you get what you pay for. Excellent food.
All in all an excellent holiday was had by all and I for one have no hesitation in recommending the Castelos da Rocha Apartments and I will definitely go back again.

Was meet by the owner Laura upon arrival who couldn't do enough for us.
The apartment was two bedroomed overlooking the swimming pool and was clean, functional and well equipped, including a washing machine. The apartment was over two levels with the two bedrooms and bathroom upstairs. There was also anothr toilet downstairs whichg was useful. We booked the apartment independently through Travel Republic and got a great deal despite it being during the school half term holidays. Always got a lounger and the poolside snack bar was a great bonus. About a 5 minute walk away from the excellent beach and bars and restaurants but far enough away from them that they didn't disturb you. Plenty of parking if you are driving. Will definitely return and recommend for a good basic no frills but comfortable base.

Where do I start with this review?

We booked a last minute 4 day getaway (from the election) leaving 5th May returning 9th May - picked up a real bargain and thought a 1 bed apartment for 4 days anywhere would be ok. Well upon arrival we were met by the wonderful Laura who had our room ready (earlier than advertised) we were walked from reception across to the block of apartments and shown our 1 bed room apartment!!! This room consisted of a ground floor that had a fully equipped kitchen including a washing machine (first time ever for me in an apartment), dining area, settees (including a bed settee) and a tv (which surprise surprise in Portugal showed Portuguese programmes along with CNN news - not sure what people expect? BBC and ITV?? - see a previous review) , we were then led upstairs to our upper complex that had 2 bathrooms and 2 separate bedrooms - this1 bed apartment could have slept 6 people comfortably.

With only 4 days in Portugal we were determined too see as much of the area as possible. Praia da Rocha beach front is a 5 minute walk away, the beach is huge, access either down a ramp (near the police station) or one of the many steps. At the East end of the resort there is a Marina - you can walk from here along the beach the full length of the beach to Praia da Vu (you have to leave the beach at 1 location). Another glorious place to visit is Alvor we walked along the cliff to Alvor via Praia da Vu - it took about 2 1/2 hours and we later found that it was about a 8 mile walk, locals had told us it was 45mins away!! they meant by bus which is how we returned (via Portimao). In Alvor you will find a quaint fishing village with a lot of restaurants - we had "lunch" at the restaurant at the bottom of the village next to the quay, we ordered sardines, potatoes and salad at 6euro each, well this lunch consisted of 6 mackerel sized sardine each along with the salad and potatoes - this was supposed to be lunch!! needless to say we didn't need a large evening meal.

Lots of places to eat in Praia da Rocha (every cuisine you can think of), we wanted to try typical Portuguese food (so thanks to Trip Advisor) we ate at Ju and Casa da Rocha just turn to the right as you reach the main strip both are located near to the fountain - both of these restaurants are not the cheapest but are excellent food. If, like me, you have never been to Portugal and have tried piri piri chicken in the UK then don't be fooled by the gravy boat of piri piri sauce the bring to the table - in Ju they served 6 pieces of chicken and I thought 2 spoonfuls over the chicken would do as a tester!! Lips and tongue tingled for quite a while after that - thankfully there is good supply of cold beer and ice cream for your desert. It is nothing like the piri piri you are used too but is very very nice - You have been warned!! Portuguese style steak is another recommended meal, it is served in a bowl with gravy and potatoes (my description isn't doing the dish justice), also any fish dish is a must. Cataplana is the local dish (served in a covered round dish) we didn't have time to try this dish but will do when we return.
Lots of places do 6.90euro 3 course specials if you are on a tight budget and there are plenty of 1 or 2 euro a pint places (prices on the main strip down near the police station are 3 or 3.5 euro a pint).

Local transport is very cheap. A day ticket (which you purchase on the bus) costs 1.5 euro each, you keep this ticket show it to the bus driver and can then travel anywhere all day, we found out too late that we could have used the bus to get to Albufuria or Lagos for this price - you just get the bus to Portimao and there are buses to lots of places. Portimao has a nice Marina, when we were there (Saturday) it was the speed boat Grand Prix which was interesting to watch the time trials - the main race was on the Sunday.

Too sum up I'd thoroughly recommend Praia da Rocha to all as everyones tastes will be catered for (food, drink, entertainment etc). Most of all though I can't recommend highly enough the Apartamentos Castelos da Rocha and especially Laura (who is a very talented artist) who cannot do enough for you - she makes your holiday.
