Apartamentos Castelos da Rocha
Reviewed June 6, 2013

I have just returned from a week's holiday and we booked to stay in Castelos da Rocha. I had booked a twin room (travelling with Mother), pleased that we had been allocated a 2 bedroom apartment. Rooms were perfect, good sized and spacious! The balcony however was off the room which had twin beds in it, and upstairs in the apartment. If I had children I wouldn't have felt that it would be safe to have a balcony in the room where children would probably be sleeping (twin room, other room had double bed)! It may be different in the other apartments so probably worthwhile checking. The balcony was in the shade so we were never sitting out in it anyway. The bathroom was big enough too, shower looked a little flimsy but was actually really good. The kitchen had everything, cooker, micro, fridge, washing machine, coffee machine, kettle etc all utensils provided as well, only slight issue was with the cooker, the heat melted the plastic bit above the cooker, should have probably told management but it looked like it had been like that for a while so I'm sure they would know. The sofa was a bit dated but didn't mind as hardly in during day anyway. We were told the cleaners would be in 5 times a week but they only changed our towels and bed linen once and that was the day before we left! There is no heating or air con in these apartments so I'd advise you to take a big cardy for night time as a couple of nights it was freezing! The Algarve gets a cool breeze at night and was a bit cold at night in the apartment. I didn't use the pool, it looked a bit dirty to me but other people were in it and didn't seem to mind. The bar at the pool is expensive, I preferred going to the beach as drinks etc are cheaper plus much nicer view. Pool area was quiet, in fact the apartments were great for that, peaceful sleep! It's a 5 min walk to the beach from apartments however you need to get down a lot of stairs to get to the beach, I wouldn't say it's suitable for people with mobility issues. Overall a great stay at these apartments and good value for the price.

Castelos da Rocha Hotel was a great little find. We had a 2 bedroom apartment with a balcony overlooking the pool and a partial view to the sea, there was plenty of room for 3 females. We arrived after midnight but the bar was kept open for us, just in case we wanted a drink on arrival! Very thoughtful.
The room had everything we needed, including a microwave, washing machine, iron....There was a small bar area which also served snacks.
It was a 4/5 minute walk to the beach and bars/restaurants.
For my first time in Portugal it was lovely. But I have to say a big big thank you to Laura who runs the hotel with effortless ease and nothing was too much trouble and alongside her partner Fernandez they have a great set up, I can't wait to go back.
The resort was quiet as it was early in the season (1st week in May) but for an inexpensive holiday, we really couldn't ask for more.

Go to:
Taffy's - great breakfast, and a fun quiz on a Monday night, run by Ian and Carl(os).
Claire's - for a great steak and fun staff.
NoSoloAgua - a gem of a find, at the end of the strip, down the steps. It's a fantastic area with many sunbeds of different styles, too much to describe here, but go there if you can. You won' be disappointed.
Alvor - a little fishing village with cute restaurants for the catch of the day. We had red snapper, which was delicious. Catch the sunset, it's beautiful.
Also, there are a couple of nice Italian restaurants on the main drag (the names of which escape me).
Some cafe bars sell chocolate cups, if you're a chocoholic you have to try one!

Room Tip: Our 2 bedroom apartment overlooked the pool above the bar, and we had sun most of the day. There was...

Spent 6 nights here for my birthday in April. Laura was very helpful indeed. Due to our arriving after midnight I did as said and contacted her via email to give time of arrival. After doing so she asked if there was anything she could do to help. Travelling with hand luggage only and no shops open at that time I asked if possible to get us some water/milk/bread.
What a woman she even got eggs and a bottle of wine too.
Thanks Laura.
The apartment was fantastic, huge, warm, overlooking pool. And felt very safe and secure here with door locking systems and locked gates at pool. Pool bar was just getting up and running for the season I think and Iren the lady from there was so friendly.
Great place and would go back tomorrow if I could. Would certainly recommend.

On arriving for an Easter break (as another review) the apartments were being painted so half the block did look a bit of a mess, but as we thought at least they were doing them up. Very spacious apartments, microwave, oven, fridgefreezer, toaster and a washing machine, there was even a windbreak and sun umbrella.Apartments cool at night but expected it for time of year, could hire a heater if needed. We liked the idea that you actually had a key to open the main door so it was very secure. The beach was only about a five minute walk away if that. Adequate size pool. Laura was very helpful, rooms cleaned regulary, they even washed the floors. If you are self catering there is a big supermarket about a 10 to 15 minute walk away (come out of apartment turn right, at end of road turn right again follow main road down until you reach supermarket. There is a lidl, Aldi and Mcdonalds). There is another supermarket further along the road it is actually in Portamo center, with Primark, H&M, several eating places.Because there was 6 of us it was cheaper to get a taxi then by bus, it cost us 8 euros. They have a snack bar which just opened, the prices were not alot of difference from other bars.On the main strip you can buy a three course for about 9 euros. We would definately go back and recommend these apartments.

Room Tip: Apartments far right have sun in the afternoon.

We stayed here in May 2012. Arriving at 11:45pm Laura was there to meet us and show us to our apartment. Very friendly Lady who also had bottles of water waiting for us. With 5 adults 1 child and a baby staying in a two bedroom apartment we were worried we would be over crowded but that was not the case at all. The apartments are very spacious and have everything you need for a self catering holiday, large fridge/freezer toaster kettle washing machine etc. there was also washing up liquid, washing powder etc. we requested a travel cot for our 6 month old. The Travel cot looked brand new and Laura had also left us a baby chair to attach to the kitchen chairs, which shows she aims to cater for her customers needs. The pool and pool area were spotless. The idea of having to use your keys to acces the pool made it feel more secure.. The apartments are in a good location with it been a 5 minute walk to the beach front. We were really impressed with the apartments that we have rounded up 21 family members to return in May 2013. Hopefully our stay will be as pleasant as it was last year!

We stayed for a short break at Easter.
Our first impression was dreadful. The apartments were being painted and the parts that hadn't been done yet looked like a condemned building! You could see that it would look nice once it had been finished though so our timing was very unfortunate.
We were upgraded from a studio to a one bedroom apartment. It was spacious and nicely decorated. However the boiler was inadequate as there was not enough hot water for two people (this was an apartment that could probably sleep 4-6). We flagged this after using it the first time and a repair was made, but it did not improve. The cooking equipment was OK but could have been significantly better (i.e. with the provision of baking trays, a microwave, a good knife). Also it would have been nice to at least have tea towel, a cloth and a little washing up liquid. Self catering always varies but to be expecting to bring your own tea towel is a little odd!
We were told when booking that there was a maid service but our apartment was not cleaned during out 3 night break.
We booked this apartment for the use of the swimming pool. There are two pools. One was draining awaiting maintenance and the other was too dirty to swim in. We also had to clean off our own sun loungers as they were very dirty. The snack bar was also not open as expected. I am not sure if we had been missold the facilities by our agent (Travelsoon) or if the complex was running behind usual with winter maintenance and not told the agent.
Also, as many other reviews suggest, it is very cold in the apartments and heater hire is essential so factor this into your costs. There is however, provision of lots of blankets so we were not cold when sleeping.
There were plus points. The owner is very friendly, beds are comfy, we were able to stay in the apartment late without incurring an extra change and there is a little multi-language book exchange in the reception - so no need to fill your suitcase with books if you are kindle-averse!
I'm sure this place is OK in summer when it's all up and running but Easter is NOT the start of their season!

The apartment was huge, simply but equipped adequately, clean, near to the beach, restaurants and shops, the manager is really helpful, should be 5 stars.

However the apartments were cold, there was no heating. A portable heater was offered but that was at a cost of €5 a day. It is an extra cost that I feel I should have been advised of at the time of booking by travel Republic through which we booked. The one heater was inadequate to heat the large apartment.

There was no fitness center, childrens center or room service so these are N/A
