“Great family hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 17, 2013

We booked a 2-bedroom suite through Jet2 in mid-August. It was the best family room we have yet stayed in - bags of room, very comfortable and a nice big balcony. The living room and kitchenette/breakfast bar were very useful. The only small downside was that the view from the room was partially disrupted by the palm trees in front.

Breakfast was excellent with plenty of choice and variety, though the staff occasionally struggled to keep everything topped up. Don't miss the waffles! We booked B&B and felt the dinner menu, though varied, lacked veggie options and was a little over priced. Instead we explored the local restaurants. We would definitely recommend the New Delhi Indian restaurant and Mirasy's, both within easy walking distance of the hotel in Senora de Rocha. We also enjoyed a takeaway pizza from Belmondo's on our balcony - tasty although a little pricey.

We usually avoid hotel entertainment, but not this time. From aqua-aerobics in the afternoon, to evening entertainment including an outstanding circus night including children's workshops, the activities were well organised and fun. The Kids' Club is really good, well staffed and with popular activities including bracelet-making.

The salt-water outdoor pool is very clean and is complemented by a popular fresh-water indoor pool. The water in both is regularly checked with ph levels, salinity and temperature which are all prominently posted. There are plenty of subeds and static umbrellas round the pool and down the lawned area to the cliff-top.

The main beach of Senora de Rocha is easily accessible with plenty of facilities. It's worth exploring through the tunnel at the end of the beach through to the quieter beach the other side of the promentory. A trip to the main centre of Armacao - for a day trip to the beach, or for an evening meal and walk along the promenade - is a must. The hotel do provide a courtesy bus.

Trips out that are worth taking include Zoomarine and the "Fiesa" - the stunning sand sculptures in nearby Pera. It's worth visiting the sand sculptures in the early evening so that you see them in daylight and then lit up at night. One word of warning - if you book trips through the hotel you will need to pay in cash or face a credit card supplement.

All the staff at the hotel; established and trainee; were helpful and friendly. We would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel to anyone.

Room Tip: Worth paying for a sea view. 2-bedroom suites and superior rooms are excellent.

The hotel was clean and only 5 mins from the beach, there are four beaches within 10 minutes walk and they are not overcrowded.
There was a good mix of people from different countries and there were no issues with towels being placed on sun beds first thing in the morning.
The room was clean and had good facilities although I did find the bed uncomfortable and I was under the impression we'd have two bedrooms not one and a pull out bed for the children, this would have been a problem if they were a bit older.
Some of the staff were very helpful whilst others were very poor (particularly the older staff) and had no sense of urgency.
When we went the indoor pool, pool table air hockey and change machine were all out of order and only back in action a couple of days before we left.
Very poor bus service to neighbouring towns and I'd just get a taxi rather than waiting as it's not much more expensive either.
Outdoor pool is salt water and although it initailly felt cold when getting in it was fine.
There was a good range of food although anybody really serious about food would be disapointed.
I didn't like the fact we had to pay for a safe as this should be a standard item in my view.
Overall for a family with two kids aged 9 and 11 the venue is not loud and is close to the excellent beaches I would go again as we just spent all the time at the beach or pool.
If your looking for more shopping and usual sunday roasts, full english breakfasts and British bars then it's not for you.

Room Tip: Get a seaview room on the fifth or sixth floor.

Spent 10 nights here, first 2 nights our 2 bed apt. was not available, so stayed in corner 1 bed, with no sea view, looking at 8 noisy aircon units.Couch bed & all pillows unconfortableBreakfast is ok, dinner is not - overcooked & lukewarm.Pool is very cold & is salt water, will sting your eyesLocation is very remote, will require taxi everywhereStaff very good, massage in spa excellent. Fab views from balcony, but could not sit out due to noisy aircon unit & light attracting undesirable fliesHotel needs a major overhaul, very dated. Will not be back

We went to the Pestana Viking for a week in July as a party of 8 ranging in age from 70 to 3. First of all I must comment on what a beautiful location the hotel is in, right on a cliff top overlooking the sea. It is so lovely sitting out by the pool and even with a larger party such as ours we never had any issues with sunbeds and managed to sit in the same spot every day which was next to the kids pool. The gardens and pools are all very well maintained and I cannot praise the staff highly enough from gardeners to bar to reception. The room (we had a 2 bed suit) was really well equpit and spotless and the food very good indeed. Only slight issue was the lack of things for kids to do. All in all a wonderful week many memories and highly reccomended.

Room Tip: Room 436 is very good

The facilities at the hotel are very good (would give it four stars); however, the staff was overworked and this translated into poor customer service (2 stars). This hotel has mostly side view sea rooms. Request a room on the 6th or 7th floor for a good view. The rooms are large with great bathrooms, efficient kitchen area (you could easily make meals - refrigerators, microwave, sink, plates, cooking utensils, etc.), a big balcony and seating area. The outdoor pool is salt water and there is plenty of seating. The buffet breakfast was had a good variety and was enjoyable.
Here is the service report: the harried reception gave us a hard time over our reservation (made in January, 2013 for July, 2013) - they had changed us to another hotel which was a golf resort over 10 km away- NOT in the area with the amazing cove beaches. We were not pleased with this option and declined this option which led to us having to give them a copy of our hotels.com voucher 3 days into visit. We were given no information about the hotel and services on check in. The indoor pool was out of order the entire 4 nights and 5 days of our stay. The spa was not easy to set up appointments- but if the indoor pool is not working during high season- how concerned might they be about the upkeep of spa facilities? Housekeeping was very minimal and not completed until after 4 or 5 pm. Example- floors not vacuumed. Pool towels not always staffed during opening hours. The big picture was that the hotel needs to increase staffing to meet the 4 star beach hotel expectations we had.
Recommendation- go to the beach that is the Eco natural beach to the left of the hotel- there are a lot of stairs but it is so beautiful and quieter than the Senorha da Rocha beach which has fishermen boats and water sports. Chairs, umbrella and table are 12 Euros per day. It is an amazing sandy beach inside a rocky cove and the swimming was awesome! We took a small boat tour of the other coves 20 Euros each- it was spectacular and took 1 hour- much nicer than the tours that shuttle you out to a bigger boat and then ferry you into the coves.

We stayed here for a week after paying a lot of money and went with quite high expectations. We were so disappointed the hotel outside could do with a repaint, our room was overlooking other people's balconies we could have had a chat to next door, so not what we wanted I complained as I'd paid extra for a luxury family room overlooking the odeon, we were moved to a better room but still were overlooked.
The food oh gosh they had theme nights the first night we got there we were expecting a huge buffet of flavoursome foods, instead were told we couldnt stay in the sir conditioned restaurant but had to eat outside amongst the angry mosquitoes and were shown to the worst buffet under a gazebo congealed green chicken, fish which smelt rank, I are cheese and biscuits the safer option and even that had flys on.
Just awful I had to complain a lot, the pool was saltwater so the children came out with red stinging eyes.
If you want to escape there is the beach down 100 steps which was very poor and sea rough it is so remote you really are stuck.
The only positive were the staff who were polite and friendly probobly because they were sick of me complaining !!!!

My boyfriend and I stayed at the Pestana Viking Resort at the end of June for a week. This was our first visit to this resort. The weather was amazing, very warm and we got lovely tans! The facilities at the Pestana Viking were great. The pool was extremely clean and very big. The breakfast had the usual - bacon, eggs, beans, selection of fruit, bread and yoghurt [it is best to eat at the breakfast near the pool, instead of inside so you can enjoy the summer breeze]. This hotel is a perfect location if you want to relax, get a great tan and sit by a beautiful beach. There are some amazing restaurants in the area, we never had a bad meal [you can get a map from reception which tells you where they are located]. We stayed in the 'garden view' room, I wouldn't suggest staying in this one, it has no view and was a bit disappointing. The only problem I found with this hotel was the bed, it was very hard and I had to pad it with two blankets to be able to sleep comfortably. Overall we had a great stay at the Pestana Viking Resort.

Room Tip: Don't choose the garden view room.
