“Probably the best hotel in the Algarve”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 21, 2011

After staying in many hotels and resorts in the Algarve over the years, I decided I wanted to stay in a property where I could walk to the beach easily, preferably a secluded beach with hotel service. This narrowed my search down to three hotels: Vilalara, Vila Vita Parc and Quinta do Lago. The latter has quick access to Ancao beach, a very fashonable large and flat stretch of sand. The other two have acess to the kind of small golden cliff postcard beaches for which the Algarve is famous. I chose Vilalara over the other two because the rooms seemed much more to my liking, and it seemed to be smaller and more exclusive.
I wasn't disapointed: Vilalara is a not to be missed world class experience.
The hotel is made up of a group of buildings set on a cliff amid beautiful gardens boasting magnificent ocean views. The small beach was heavenly, with great ambience, and again what a view. The junior suite i stayed at was large, very tastefully and soberly designed. Huge balcony, very nice bathroom and lots of storage space. Service was competent throughout, allthough a bit hit and miss at the beach bar. I didn't try the restaurant for dinner, but had lunch by the pool everyday, and it was always excellent.
About half of the hotel accomodations are privately owned apartments. Many of the owners are civilized upper class portuguese, which is a good thing. The hotel is owned by a portuguese millionaire who vacations there, thus taking exceptional care of the property.
All in all, Vilalara completely won me over, and became my hotel of choice in the Algarve.

The southern coast of Portugal is paradise and a resort located over there with a history of its own can be nothing but spectacular. Vilalara is one among several resorts located close to each other. What makes it spectacular is its unique adobe-like architecture spread across a large area, a swimming pool overlooking the beach and a huge rock island that stands solo facing the pool. At night, it's lit up and birds go to nest there, and that makes it unique to Vilalara. The beach is terrific and feels private because it is C-shaped. The resort is memorable because of the way it uses the natural landscape and the ups and downs that the architecture integrates into it. The lovely lawns and the chef's own spice garden plus the cackle of the birds and the gorgeous blue of the sea make the place breathtaking. Service is also good, especially at the restaurant, with a bunch of cheerful waiters making you feel at ease. The food of course is mind-blowing. The room I had faced a garden and not the sea, unfortunately. But it was really spacious, cheerful, luxuriously appointed with lots of storage etc. The bathroom itself is a great place and you'd never want to emerge from the shower. The toiletries are high quality stuff too. Unfortunately I didn't have the chance to try the spa and detoxify myself. If I had to go through that as well, then perhaps I would never leave!

Room Tip: You can't go wrong with any of the rooms!

This was our 4th stay at Vilalara and certainly wont be the last. Expensive but worth every penny. Wonderful gardens, spacious airy bedrooms, excellent service, amazing breakfast, peaceful surrounding. I would recommend this hotel to anyone searching for tranquility and peace. Absolutely amazing place.

The hotel is sandwiched between big cliffs. This creates an outstanding private beach for guests. The hotel is very relaxing filled with lush gardens. The rooms are WAY nicer in person than they are in the photos, and the bathrooms have been recently redone. The resort is very comfortable, and relaxing. My husband felt there were lots of stairs, but I never noticed them. They are making an effort to make healthier food options, but the food is really bland. The breakfast is outstanding, but the lunch and dinner leave a lot to be desired.

We spent 2 weeks in this very comfortable hotel which is located in a large park, almost a botanical garden. There are 3 pools of which one overlooking the sea. There is access to a clean, private beach located at a 4 minutes’ walk from the pool terrace. The food is good, served on a terrace overlooking the cliffs and the sea. Our room with balcony was large, well equipped with some sea view.

The Algarve is not the most exciting region in Portugal to visit except for places like Faro, Travisa, Albufeira, Ferrugado and Cabo di Sao Vicente. The coast is full of building ruins and real estate speculation has done much harm to a lovely region. However, if you play golf there are many courses to visit.

Away from all the hotel bunkers in a very private setting.... Perfect to relax for couple of days. If possible look you get an ocean view room, however I had a garden view room and the garden is lovely maintained and smells wonderful...

Staff is increadible attentive and the SPA treatments are a dream. I did not book Halfboard. The restaurant is quite pricey. There are lovely little restaurants also outside the resort. However, at least one time you should have dinner in the hotel too as the setting and the view are magic and again this lovely staff.

The rooms are spacious and well equipped however I missed a radio or CD player or a docking station for my Ipod to listen relaxed to some music. Only a TV in the room. Also the rooms are a bit noisy. If you have a connecting door in the room you could basically hear every sound from the bathroom next door.... The rooms are tastefully decorated and super comfortable. Loved the little sofa corner on my balcony.... Would come here always and again and already reccomended the hotel to my friends.

In Tripadvisor I have seen some people complaing about the distances from the room to the reception and restaurants... Personally I think that exactly this is so special about this place, because of the setting... No hotel bunker but very individual. And if you do not wish to walk, just one call away they come and pick you up with a golfcart. If you like it small, cosey, stylish, personal with a touch of luxury this is the place...

Room Tip: Try to get a room which has no connecting door!
