“Tucked away in the Tuscan countryside”
Reviewed October 2, 2013

My husband and I visited Tenuta il Corno on our honeymoon in early September. From the moment we arrived, to the moment we left, we felt like we were home. From the big hug from Enrica when we arrived to the solemn one before we left - we loved our stay here. We stayed in the Palaggio apartment, which is HUGE and both windows had amazing views (one of the hills and another of the pool). It is not very close to any major city, so at night it is completely silent - such a welcome reprieve from our busy time in Monterosso. The rooms do not have AC, but they will give you a small fan if you ask at the front desk. We really did not use it much, though, since it got so cool at night.

Maria (the owner) took us on a private tour of the wine cellar, and told us all about their process of making wine. We learned so much from our short time with her, but we now want to learn more - she inspired us to take classes on wine now that we are back home in the states! Her adorable little boys ran around during the day and kept us smiling, along with the cats who visited us during our meals on the patio. The pool is heavenly! There are hammocks that surround it - perfect for an afternoon siesta.

We ate at the restaurant a few times, and our food there was very good every time. Our favorite dish was the spaghetti al ragu - YUM! I am still dreaming about it! You cannot go wrong with any of the wine, either. We could not stop drinking the fantastic wine they produce - and brought back 2 bottles for when we are feeling extra nostalgic.

We were looking for a quiet, relaxing place to stay - and this definitely fit the bill. If you are looking for something that is closer to Florence, though, I would not recommend staying here. It is about 45 minutes to drive into the city so you have to have a car. We did a day trip into Florence, and were more than happy with that :)

Just returned from a 10 night stay at Il Corno with my husband and 2 teenage daughters. It was superb! The staff were extremely pleasant and helpful from the outset. Enrica on reception had even emailed me with information about things to do with children before we got there and was so welcoming when we arrived despite the fact she had to work late as we were later arriving than expected.
The owner Maria is very friendly and a mine of information about Tuscany and gave us a brilliant tour of the wine cellars and a taste of the Chianti. She is so enthusiastic about her home and the massive estate that she manages it was enchanting.
There are 2 pools on the estate. One is at the main building where Reception and the restaurant are. There are a few rooms and apartments there. The other pool is with the other buildings 600m along the road where there are about 8 more apartments.
We booked through booking.com and it was breakfast included. So we drove up to the main building each morning. The building we were in was quieter and had much more open views of the countryside too. Breakfast was unexciting but what you would expect in a hot European country. All cold food, cereals, bread, ham, cheese and cake. you could make toast too.
The room we were in was called "Santa Cristina" and was on the 2nd floor. it had generously sized rooms, was spotlessly clean and a well equipped kitchen area with cooker with oven and hob. No microwave but it didnt bother us. Beds were both 2 singles hooked together and when we asked for our daughters bed to be split into two this was done the next morning.
It was extremely hot during our stay and we had to ask for portable fans in our room so that we could get some sleep. This was done immediately which did help. We made friends with another family who told us that they had booked air con before coming so we enquired about that and a unit became available 2 days later which did help us a lot with the last few days of our stay. (this option was never mentioned on booking.com).
The bed linen and towels were changed after 5 nights, ie halfway through our stay which was great.
we would highly recommend Il Corno. As a base for touring Tuscany its excellent. About 1 hour from Pisa by car. 40 minutes by bus from San Casciano (the nearest town) to Florence.
50 minutes drive to Siena. A minor moan would be about the sunbeds. Some of them were broken and those that werent were fairly uncomfortable. But as its the only fault i could find it shouldn`t be a deal breaker for anyone! There are free bikes to hire with a returnable deposit. Take a map as my husband got well and truly lost despite a sat nav!
We tried the restaurant there on our first night as it was late and all shops were shut. The food is quite expensive and a little disappointing. But we were given a free Bruschetta as we had to wait a long time for our meal. We didnt bother eating there again as we ate out whilst sightseeing mostly. San Casciano is a delightful place and if you ignore the monstrous red walled multi storey car park that looms up as you approach the village and get to its medieval core you will be delighted. Its not at all touristy and incredibly relaxed and friendly. we kept going back to one restaurant so often they gave us a bottle of wine as a leaving present.!
Fab holiday didnt want to come home :-(

Room Tip: We stayed in the "Santa Cristina" 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom apartment on the 1st floor. It wa...

This was incredible! I'm not even sure if I can even express in words how thrilled I was with my stay. It was just far enough away from Firenze that there was a delicious breeze and the quiet of the countryside, but close enough that you could go into Firenze for the day or even for a morning or afternoon. Firenze was only 30 mins away.

The pool was lovely, especially for it being a traditional summer in Tuscany. The old castle was so quaint and there were wineries and olive groves on the property. The homemade olive oil and wine were DELICIOUS! The best part of my stay was the hospitality. The owner, herself, worked in the kitchen to create the most delicious meals and she was always smiling and present, ready to help with any request. It is an extremely romantic place. Breakfast was huge and varied and almost all of it was organically and locally grown!

It is EXTREMELY affordable to stay here and I highly recommend it to get out of the heat, pollution and crazyness of Firenze (it was 90+ degrees when we were there!). It is SO cool staying in a place that has such a rich history, as well. Tenuto il Corno is absolutely beautiful, the staff is SO accomodating and I highy recommend it without hesitation. YOU WILL LOVE YOUR STAY!!!

While we did not stay here (we had a villa up the road), we did have dinner here and had a great meal with great service. Our family of four ordered a variety of appetizers, salads and entrees and everyone was very pleased. Beautiful restaurant, very reasonably priced in a beautiful location. Well worth a stop one evening if you are in Tuscany!

We have spent a fair bit of time in this part of Italy and have rarely had a bad experience. Pretty much everywhere you stay, the atmosphere is warm and relaxed. The food and wine are usually top drawer, and the weather is a beautiful finishing touch.

What set Tenuta il Corno apart for us wasn't anything "out of this world" in particular, but rather the seamless coming together of all the small details and experiences that make a stay so special and memorable.

Ironically, we had no intention of staying at Tenuta. We were driving from another agriturismo to the south, heading towards Florence. We had a bit of time on our hands and took the scenic route as it were, even though pretty much all routes around here are scenic, and happened to drive past this place. Don't know why, but we both looked at each other and wanted to turn around and pop in and have a look, so we did. It was about 11.00am so we werent too confident if they would even be open, but open they were. We walked into the reception area which doubles up as their on site shop and were greeted by a very friendly receptionist. The restaurant area appeared to be closed between breakfast and lunch. Tentatively, we enquired about maybe having a coffee and looking around, on which the receptionist warmly invited us in and then ran off and came back a few minutes later with 2 of the nicest cups of coffee we ever had! How did that happen? My fiancee and I are both self confessed coffeeholics and one of our main critisisms, even in Italy, is that the coffee can be a bit hit and miss. Another bemused look at each other followed, and we both knew there and then that we would simply have to come back and stay here proper!

Sure enough, we returned a couple of days later and checked in for a night. The same friendly lady booked us in and showed us to our room. It was spacious and clean, with a kitchenette and a massive bathroom, which to our delight, had a sizeable bathtub. As for the views, well, if you like the traditional Tuscan landscape that we all dream of, then you have it here in every direction as far as the eye can see! Perfect!

We spent a bit of time by the pool which was nice and clean. Our only criticism here was that the loungers weren't the most comfortable in the world, but maybe we are being a bit precious. In the evening we made our way to the restaurant, which is beautifully designed and had that lovely atmosphere where you feel relaxed and at ease. The food was reasonably priced and delicious. As for the wine....well....excellent! Suffice to say we filled the boot of our car with their wine on departure! What I also liked was that locals came to eat here as well, a good sign in my book!

Service: I found a lot of amusement in our waiter. He didn't really speak any english and our italian is pretty poor. What followed was a mixture of arm waving, pointing at the dishes on the menu, and broken italian. My partner got the giggles as a result (like a said, the wine is good!) but the waiter and I were so busy trying to get the order right, we both took a bit of offence towards her childish behaviour! I saw the funny side of it later but I don't think the waiter did, and he always approached our table with obvious trepidation thereafter.

We ended up extending twice and staying at Tenuta il Corno for 3 lazy, relaxing days and enjoyed every minute of it! If you want 5 star luxury then this place is not it, but if you want a more genuine, rustic experience with great wine, great food and great coffee, then give this place a try!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
It is one of the most beautiful estates in Val di Pesa and was built by the ancient Del Corno family in the 12th century. The family committed itself with diligence and dedication to enhancing the rural environment and this estate was turned into a real "agronomical park". In 1523 - when the Renaissance was at its peak - the estate passed to the Strozzi family.Il Corno became their summer house. Since 1911 it is owned by the Counts Frova Arroni di Arrone, who carried on all its traditional agronomic activities - oil and wine production - with diligence and commitment, in a perfect union between high technology, traditional methods and respect for the environment. Towards the end of the 1990s some of the main country houses of the estate were restored and renovated and today they serve as accommodation for our guests. There are rooms and apartments - partly made up of original pieces - where tradition, elegance and simplicity create a real magic atmosphere. Here you will spend very relaxing holidays, sun baths or swimming in one of our pools surrounded by our big park. Enjoy some of our delicious typical food and drinking one of our fine wines !!. Finally, the Villa represents a romantic Renaissance-style location where to celebrate weddings, parties , meetings, conventions and any other events. You can stay in our country houses in an apartments or in a room, elegantly furnished, partly with original and antique pieces . The hills of the Chianti region, with vineyards and olive trees, characterize the splendid landscape that surrounds our country houses. These houses were built more than 500 years ago and they have been restored taking great care to preserve their original structure, materials and furniture. Their wooden beams and terracotta floors perfectly match the comfort and modernity of the services provided. You will experience the best of your holiday diving into our swimming pools surrounded by nature, having breakfast while admiring our breathtaking landscape, tasting the excellent wines we produce or having a romantic candlelit dinner. ... more   less
