“Four Friends - Fabulous Fun”
Reviewed November 17, 2013 via mobile

What a great week we spent at the castle. Check in was fun and informative. Melanie showed us around and made us all feel very welcome. We signed up for a great cooking class arranged by Melanie. We are still using the recipes and techniques we learned to impress our friends at home. The accommodations were wonderful, and the central location to the hill towns worked out perfectly. We would recommend the castle and its gracious owners, Diana and Giovanni, for anyone visiting central Italy.

This isn't a hotel; it's a castle. If you are looking for a luxurious hotel with room service, maid service etc., look elsewhere. If you want to spend an amazing time in a lovely apartment in an ancient castle, steeped in history, with charming hosts and incredible views no matter where you turn (either inward to the castle itself or the surrounding area), then consider Castello di Montalto. We stayed in the Torre del Vescovo, an elegant and yet comfortable place, with art work and antiques. And a working fireplace. With firewood available. We'd take day trips to the lovely hill towns in the area and come home to a castle. A castle. We'd build a fire, open a bottle of wine, have some bread and cheese.

My husband and I celebrated our Wedding over three days at Montalto this Summer. The propriators Diana and Giovanni were incredibly warm and welcoming when we first met them in January, and we knew immediately we'd found our special place. It was the most enchanting experience, and surpassed our highest expectations in many ways; It really felt as if we had come to stay in someone's magnificent home, with more or less free reign to do what we wished. Of course, the setting is utterly stunning, the Castle's outbuildings and rooms are beautifully sympathetic with a historical and classical nature of the Castle. They all have a small kitchen, and incredible views- many dwellings have their own terrace which delighted the guests! We had various functions and the ceremony to organise, and Melanie and Diana couldn't have been more helpful with the logistics and preparations.
Without our constant communication with Melanie over the two or three months preceding the Wedding, we would have felt far less relaxed over the few approaching days. She was really so helpful and lovely and brilliant and nothing was too much trouble.

Montalto was the absolute serendipitous highlight of our month in Italy. We were on an adventurous hike and came across this "real" castle that boyhood dreams are made of. It appeared to be private, but we cautiously approached, heard some voices, and fortunately met Melanie. She explained that the castle is private, but does offer some rooms. We spent a few nights in La Scuola (part of the castle), but, located just outside the castle's walls. It was very private and romantic. We even had our own Barn Owl visit early in the morning.
Because of everything being booked, we needed to move to Casa del Guardia, another area of the castle, where we stayed for the next 10 days. It was fantastic! We had a fire going every evening. Melanie directed us to a local food market, and my wife prepared some amazing meals. Of course, included regional wine.

Breakfast was available every morning for a nominal fee. It was always quite enjoyable, and just could not beat the ambience or price. Talking about price, we've stayed in 5 Star hotels all over the world, and we could stay at Montalto for many, many days for the same rate of one night at another hotel, and not have the enjoyment of staying at a real castle.

Yes, the floors may creak and slope, there is no room service, and the accommodations may be a bit rustic for some people. So, if you are one of them, stay down the street at Castel Monastero for 20 times more money per night. We did, and that's why we ended up at Montalto.

Montalto is centrally located in Tuscany, and Melanie was able to arrange some wonderful private tours to vineyards and other towns.

Also, since our stay was extended, we were able to meet the proprietors, delightful people that added a historical perspective to our visit; battles actually raged between Montalto (Siena side) and a castle on the next hill that was probably not more than a 2 miles away (Florence side).

We will be back! Next time for at least a month.

Thank you Montalto & Melanie! SAS

We were very excited to be staying in a Castle in such a beautiful part of Italy at such an affordable price. We enjoyed every minute of our stay. We stayed for 3 nights in the San Martino room (above the front gate) which was very cosy and had everything we needed. It was a very welcoming place to stay. Communication prior to booking was very clear and directions to the Castle from Sienna were fantastic. Melanie was very welcoming upon our arrival and helpful and available throughout our entire stay. She provided a full tour of the Castle upon our arrival and advised of all the amenities available to us. She provided numerous restaurant recommendations in the area and we took her up on all of these. All were superb!! Melanie also advised of various sites to see around the Castle and in nearby towns which were highlights of our stay. Giovanni & Diana were also very welcoming and provided a tour of the main castle including a very detailed history of the area from about the year 1054. Our stay was a highlight of our European trip and it was 3 nights to remember. Melanie was a superstar in providing all of the help and assistance we needed. We will be back one of these days!

Room Tip: San Martino room is perfect for a couple. Correspond with Melanie and she will advise of an appropr...

Our stay at Castello di Montalto could not have been better. Before arriving, Melanie was incredibly helpful with transportation arrangements, and she answered all our questions about our accommodations promptly and graciously. Our apartment was charming and well equipped, and Melanie and Diana saw to any additional needs that we might have. Thanks to advice from Melanie and Diana we had experiences in the countryside that we would otherwise have missed (such as the superb thermal baths at Rapolano). After a week we felt like we had been staying with friends who introduced us to the Tuscan country life rather than staying in a self catering apartment.

My wife Christine and I visited Montalto in the summer of 2012. We had a fantastic stay, and started playing with the idea that this would be a dream place to get married. We therefore contacted Diana to discuss the idea. She was extremely helpful, and together we made a budget and a plan that fitted our desires and wishes.

Long story short, we got married in the fairytale Castle Montalto in June 2013.

We thought that it might be difficult to arrange a complete wedding for 58 people in Italy, as we live in Norway. This turned out not to be a problem at all. Diana, Melanie, Elena and Giovanni did absolutely everything to make this into our dream wedding. They arranged everything for us. They even arranged permission from the local bishop so that we could have a Lutheran wedding ceremony inside the catholic medieval chapel in the castle.

We were 44 people staying at the Castle and 14 people staying at the nearby hotel Borgo Casto. The first night we had a barbecue dinner by the pool. On the wedding day we had antipasti in the garden behind Torre Vescovo, and the wedding dinner itself inside the castle. This was very romantic. The day after the wedding we had a large brunch in the courtyard on a long table, before having an Italian buffet dinner in the evening. Everything arranged by Montalto. They do not have cooks at the castle, but their local caterer does a fantastic job.

If you are dreaming about getting married in an Italian medieval castle, Castello Montalto is the place. We can not recommend it highly enough. Our 3 day wedding was actually not necessarily more expensive than a one day wedding in Norway.

Thank you so much, Diana, Giovanni, Melanie and Elena!
