Le Pietre Vive di Montaperti
Reviewed May 15, 2012

My husband and our ten year old son just returned home this month from Italy. We began our stay at Nicola and Allessandra's farmhouse. We stayed in their apartment which was so full of charm! We spent our first day in Nonna Cianna's kitchen with the help of a family friend as translater and learned to cook some really fabulous food. Although it is hard to say what was better, the food or the company. What a wonderful family that makes you feel so welcome! We left feeling like long time friends! I highly recommend staying in this delightful local which is so close to Siena but you get to experience the magnificence which is the countryside!

We knew about the other location Nicola and Alessandra own and manage, Le Quattro Torra Castle, and we were a bit sad they didn't have room -(we booked last minute) but after 3 days spent here we were actually happy it did work out this way. The apartment is very rustic elegant and newly remodeled -My kids enjoyed playing soccer with Nicola kids and nephews and we all loved the wonderful and healthy cooking of Nonna Ciana, Alessandra's Mom- We enjoyed exploring Siena and getting lost in the country-side- We also tried the local natural spa water (Terme di Rapolano)-
It was the perfect way to introduce my all american kids to history, great food and nature.
We travel to Italy quite often to visit family and this is our new favorite stop from the coast before catching the flight back home from Milan.

Wonderful hands on cooking class in a charming farmhouse kitchen. Nonna Ciana teaches the class and showed us how to make bruschetta, tagliatelle, gnocchi and chicken scaloppini from scratch. Although she doesn’t speak much English and communicated primarily though a wonderful and friendly interpreter we found her endearing and the fact that she didn’t speak much English made it all the more authentic for us.

The class was not intimidating at all. It was a lot of fun – another couple staying at Castello delle Quattro Torra joined us in the class and we enjoyed wine as we cooked and then the best part - we ate the wonderful food that Nonna Ciana helped us make. It was like spending the time with family.

They did a wonderful job of helping to keep our 5 year old son occupied while we were doing the cooking class allowing him to play with a whole room full of toys belonging to Nicola’s children (and letting him help in the kitchen when he wanted) meanwhile Nonna Ciana, like any good Grandmother, offered him lots of smiles and chocolate biscotti.

Our stay at their family's castle (Castello delle Quattro Torra) was straight out of a fairy tale and this wonderful cooking class was truly the highlight of our trip. Mille Grazie to Nonna Ciana and Nicola (the proprietor at Castello delle Quattro Torra who helped arrange the class for us and helped our son feel so welcome) for helping to make our trip so memorable.

I would highly recommend the class and if and when I make it back to Sienna I would love to have Nonna Ciana teach me again. You will be craving the homemade melt in your mouth gnocchi well after you leave.

During our stay in Siena in December, my daughters and I had a fabulous cooking lesson with Nonna and Caterina. It was so much fun and the food was delicious, the best we ate in the region. My daughter's grandmother in Australia is of Italian descent and so cooking with Nonna is something they are very familiar with. The lesson in Le Pietre Vive di Montaperti was a continuation of the culinary lessons they have had. A very special experience in such a wonderful part of the world.

We stayed here for four days in January. Such a lovely, tranquil setting, but centrally located in southern Tuscany. Very near Siena, and an hour from Florence. The grandmother of the house cooked us our own full course meal two nights which we ate in our apartment.
The apartment itself is extremely clean and comfortable. Free wifi and sky tv with flat panel television. The bathroom has very low ceilings in the shower stall so this would pose a problem for tall people, but it is something that can be dealt with for a few days. We considered it part of the charm of this truly Tuscan farmhouse.
And again, because it is so clean and newly renovated, we didn't mind.
Breakfast offerings could be expanded. Yogurt, pastries, and cereal are all that is offered. Even an offering of the regional meats and cheeses or hard-boiled eggs would be a great addition. Overall, very, very happy with both accomodations and service.
