“perfect place to relax”
Reviewed August 9, 2012

This was our last stop on our trip through Tuscany and it did not disappoint. When you enter the gates, you really feel like you are in a place separated from the rest of the world. Sitting in the pool with a cold crisp chardonnay wine from the Estate's winery with nothing but silence and the countryside before you was a highlight of the trip. We could not wait to get back from a day of touring to relax there. The breakfast is set up in a little piazza and the buffet and cooked food was fantastic. Try their poached eggs. We ate in the cantina one night and the pasta and wine was superb and I can honestly say that their pork belly with radichhio was one of the best dishes we had on our trip. The rooms are spacious and modern, the bathrooms great. They also give you a special touch by leaving you a complimentary bottle of one of their red and white wines. The hotel is close to Siena and is convenient to go to Cortona and the Chianti road. My only regret is that we did not use the spa. I wish I was there now!

While exploring Tuscany, we came upon this magnificent property outside Sienna. The ambiance, design, food, and service was great but the spa was off the charts. Inside the spa you'll be able to relax in the float pool and experience the best jacuzzi with water falls that felt like hundreds of fingers massaging our shoulders. The outdoor pools, work out facility, and serene yoga room with windows overlooking the property were also stellar. All this and the outstanding food, especially the breakfast, make this a not to be missed property if you're in the region.

Having read through some earlier Tripadvisor reviews, which were less than complimentary about certain aspects of Castel Monastero, we arrived with some slight trepidations. Things weren't looking brilliant when we were shown to our suite, which was already 'occupied' by a busy stream of ants (well, the Castel is in the countryside, and maybe they had a prior reservation!). The alternative that we were shown didn't do it for us either, but THEN ...... the wonderful Graziella took charge, and found us what must rank as one of the most delightful rooms that we have stayed in. After this little hiccup everything went fantastically well.
Our first day was spent watching the amazing madness, pageantry and passion that is the Palio in Siena. The Castel team hosted a marvellous day, providing all the background info and a brilliant viewing location. Three days later we were treated to a cookery masterclass with Gordon Ramsay, and an alfresco evening Chefs' Table (there were 3 chefs (including GR again), each demonstrating the preparation of one course. Great food, great setting, great company.
The Palio and Gordon Ramsay were 'specials' arranged through the Leading Hotels of the World's Leaders Club, so maybe those 2 events could have somewhat distorted the Castel experience. However, ignoring the special events, what remains is still a fabulous destination. The whole tone of the Castel is set by special people like Graziella and her team, who make guests feel incredibly welcome from the moment they arrive. Roberta, who manages the Spa, is a delight, and the treatments (my good lady informs me) were excellent. She is more than tempted to return for one of the Spa breaks that Castel Monastero offer, and I might even go with her!!
As with every great hotel, there are a few things that could do with some 'fine tuning': some more pasta dishes and salads should be available at La Cantina to give guests far more choice if they want a light lunch or dinner; please get a spare set of cushions for the outside bar chairs and couches. These are currently regularly 'anointed' by the resident swallows (or are they house martins or swifts?), and a spare set of cushions would give guests, lets say, more choice of where to sit. So, two mini-gripes/observations in 5 days isn't bad.
Even if I don't pluck up the courage to go on one of the Spa breaks, I will definitely be back.
PS The best room at the Castel is.......... go find out for yourself!!!!!

I was fortunate enough to visit Castel Monastero for a second time (having done a short 3 day visit in the past) and from start to finish was treated like royalty. Greeted by one and all by name, I was made to feel special and was lovingly cared for. The staff were charming, polite and efficient - special mention must go to the professional front of house manager - Mr Pilotti and the excellent spa manager Roberta. Mirella's magic hands in the spa, with her stress busting marma massage, allowed me to unwind and relax and I could then walk the few steps down to the pool where I could sunbathe to my heart's content. My bedroom was calmingly furnished, a lovely bathroom, huge walk-in shower with everything I required. A forgotten i-phone charger was swiftly despatched and brought to the room after midnight. The food on the weight loss plan is nourishing and filling and I felt healthy as well as pampered. A luxury spa is what you get - forgot those crazy detox juice fasts - they are not worth it: this is sensible eating in beautiful surroundings. A recipe for success. The general manager Mr Prevosti went out of his way to ensure that I had a wonderful visit and I can't wait to return in the near future.

We were in awe of this place! We had a wonderful room/suite with all the frills and spills one could want! Bed was absolute luxury which can be hard to find whilst travelling. Breakfast was outstanding, and dinner was a wonderful experience. Views to die for and well worth the visit. Love to get back there

Room Tip: We were on the 2nd floor and the suite was fantasic

The hotel and service were excellent. This hotel was a dream. A few things that I think may be worth mentioning. Our bathroom had a smell that may have been a drain issue, but even when the room was freshly cleaned there was a bit of a bad smell. The pool area had many bees - perhaps there was a nest there that should be looked into. The A/C did not work very well in common areas (hotel lobby, bar/ lounge) which made it very difficult to go inside and enjoy a drink in the evening if we wanted to. Other than that this hotel is top notch and the staff are excellent - incredibly friendly and helpful. We loved our stay here and hope to return one day soon!
