“If you expect helpful staff, pass your way!”
Reviewed May 30, 2012

The hotel is very nice, rooms are well furbished, bathroom is spacious, you have a little terrace with a garden and beds are comfortable.
You have also a nice breakfast area (it is also an Enoteca in the evening, but we didn't use it), with a wonderful view on the sea. Breakfast is fine with choices but a lot of broken devices (egg boilers, pastry plates,etc...)
Swimming pool area is nice, quiet and comfortable.
But the negative point is about the front desk : when we arrived, the lady at the reception didn't welcome us properly, she just gave us the keys, showed us the elevator and Basta!!!
We are demanding guests and we went several times to ask for informations which she gave but without any helpful tips.
She never recognized us (the hotel was almost empty), so we felt like just a source of revenue, that's bad because sicilian people are so friendly outside this hotel..
In the meantime, the hotel is very comfortable!

Dear Sir or Madame,

We are really sorry that your stay at our hotel has not been as pleasant as you expected to be. Moreover, it is the first time we receive a non positive mention about our staff. People who work with us are highly guest oriented and really helpful. At least, this is what our Guests report in their reviews.
Probably, since we assume you visited us in May, the reason of this lack of attention in your respect was due to the huge workload we had in this period and we can easily imagine that the lady you talking about was a little bit under pressure. We know that this is not a valid excuse and we do apologize. By the way, we hope you enjoyed your visit to Sicily.
Regards,
The General Manager

Have returned to this small boutique hotel on more than one occasion - and have never been disappointed. The staff are welcoming and professional, the reception/ lounge area warm and comortable with a stunning view of the sea ( as has the restaurant ) The rooms are stylish and modern, without being clinical, with the usual mini bar, flat screen tv - and a feature I especially liked, a docking station for my IPOD - so I could listen o my music! Bathrooms also stylish and spotlessly clean, I did prefer a more traditional shower - not keen on the rooms with a choice of body spray options, too complicated for me ! The lady who cleaned the room ( Nella ) was so helpful and friendly making sure I had everything I needed, she also served me coffee at breakfast with such a sunny smile it made a great start to my day. The breakfast is served in the same area as the restaurant in the evening - which on a weekend can be very busy with locals who go to eat there - a recommendation in itself and when you try the food you can understand why. The atmoshere in the restaurant adds to the charm of the hotel - but it is nice to escape back to the relative peace of the hotel when you have eaten your fill ! The hotel is within easy walking distance of the local town ( 10 mins - but a steep slope to begin with ) the town itself is quiet and offers the usual assortment of bars where you can partake of a coffee or gelato and watch the world go by. A small attractive pool with loungers can be enjoyed in the grounds of the hotel and a snack lunch service is available in the summer months, for those who just want to spend a day relaxing. The beach in the area is not really a beach ( reached 10 mins by car ) but more like rocks but beaches can be found further afield in Gardini Naxos if sand is your thing.
A good hotel is a sum of its parts and this one adds up to a relaxing stay with probably the best staff I have encountered in my many years of travel.

This modern, clean and efficiently run hotel is situated on the coastal road 10 miles or so north of Catania. It is worthy of it's 4 star status, has decent sized rooms with comfortable furnishings and well-maintained en-suite facilities. It is built on the side of a hill (Nearly everything is on the side of a hill on this mountainous island.) with the entrance on the higher ground. The Restaurant, bar and rececption are on this level and it seems strange to go down to the lower level for most of the bedrooms. The result of this is that if you want an early night, you may be a little disturbed by the noise of other guests upstairs. On the plus side, it was a pleasure to walk through the rear doors of our room directly onto a patio as the sun rose over the sea. Our major disappointment was the lack of a bath. Even the modern shower with it's technicolour lightshow didn't make up for the inability to enjoy a good soak after a day of walking in the mountains.
The restaurant is typically Sicillian, in that it specialises in good honest locally produced fresh fare. The breakfast buffet is of continental style with strong coffee, home-baked cakes and freshly squeezed oranges. In the evenings, many people from outside the hotel are attracted to this establishment as it enjoys a good local reputation. We ate here on several evenings and thoroughly recommend it.
Acireale boasts the best carnival in Sicily and the floats are certainly spectacular. Even on the cold and wet evening we attended the event, crowds of people participated by dressing up to watch the processions and organised enertainments. The town does not exploit this situation and remains unspoilt. This does mean, however, that there is a lack of places to eat and drink. On this point, I must add that we did find a gem of an eatery but it was 30 minutes strenuous walk from the town centre. Below Acireale lies the fishing port of Santa Caterina. Here ,on the quay, are a ristorante and a trattoria. The latter, despite no menu and no english speaking staff, we were served the best fish dinner that we have ever eaten.
Public transport consists of infrequent and confusing busses and non-existent trains. Actually, that is not quite right. Acireale does have trains, but it is lacking a station. A car is therefore necessary and here lies the rub. Sicillians are undoubtedly the worst drivers in Europe (If not the world!) Driving in towns is akin to negotiating a large dodgem ride on a boy-racers night out. Walking alongside parked cars in suburban areas (which you are obliged to do as pavements have yet to be invented), some amusement can be derived from trying to find the vehicle which is undented and has it's bumpers and wing-mirrors intact. (The bumpers are a serious matter, but the mirrors less so, as they don't use them anyway.) The Motorways wind their way through the mountains and are much safer. The smaller mountain roads provide much entertainment for drivers, but rather less for nervous passengers. It is not unusual to be negotiating one of the many hairpin bends, and being confronted by a 3-wheeled truck in the middle of the road speeding towards you with the driver talking on his mobile phone, having his arm around his boyfriend (or occassionally girlfriend). I have no idea what part of his anatomy controlled the steering wheel. I would recommend that additional insurance to cover the excess on standard car-hire terms be taken, unless you are a compulsive gambler.
In summary, I would suggest that Sicily is best seen by car and that Acireale is a reasonable place to be based for touring the Eastern half of Sicily. The Hotel Santa Caterina is a good hotel, on a main road, overlooking the sea. It has much to commend it. Without a car, it would be better to stay in an area with more facilities.

Room Tip: Sea-view rooms offer a wonderful sunrise over the Med.

We were at this place in Nov 2010, having with us mine brother in law and his wife. As mentioned above I have a famely in the area.
Reason for staying at Santa Catrina; combination of holiday, meeting our famely, a place to stay alone when wanted. It is perfect for us.
We have experieced to be welcomed, at arrivel, also when leaving. An excellent staff, always positive when we have questions.
We are planning a new travell to Aricerale in 2012. And we never change a winning team.

Chose the hotel after looking at reviews for Taormina area. Decided to get a few km out of the tourist area. I was worried about the location between a road and railway line. But, amazed how quite it was. Some guests relied on public transport but ideally you need a car for this location.

Lovely bedroom, well furnished with sea view and shared grass sitting area.
The pool was welcoming after a hard days sightseeing. But they need a few more sun-beds.
The Staff was always very helpful, whether it was reception, restaurant, housekeeping.

We don't usually eat in hotel restaurants but because we had a long drive before arrival we tried it. Very pleased we did on the lovely terrace that probably holds around 80-100. It was Sunday night and what was pleasing was that locals were coming in (smartly dressed), as it clearly has a good reputation. We ate there again.

Very nice designed hotel. Every picture on the walls is carefully chosen. Fantastic view from the terrace over the sea. We arrived late in the evening and found that there were free snacks at the bar and then I'm talking about good italian salamies, pizza bites with parmesan etc. Comfortable rooms with own terrace. Wifi. I was surprised to see a device to connect an Iphone to speakers, which I did and could enjoy my own music in the room. Parking with many places. Good capuccino, freshly pressed juice and breakfast as a whole. EXTREMELY helpfull staff! Our car was damaged at the parking and they did all the paper job for us, called Hertz and gave all the assistance needed. The pool seemed bigger on the pictures, but we never went there anyway as the sea is just near by (preferably reached by car)
