Our arrival was a little unusual, we had the feeling that we were unexpected but this seemed to be the general, cool and couldn't give a damn manner of the check in personnel. We had to drive our hire car to the parking area and meet back at reception, very unusual.
Other than that, our stay was very relaxing. Our room was excellent, very clean and well prepared.(Not a tullie as these are really quite small).
The restaurant was pleasant but the staff just ignored us, we often waited much too long to be served that it became quite annoying after a few days.
We enjoyed the Yoga courses which were on offer during our stay, a very pleasurable experience, even if you have never tried this just do it - Wonderful.
The pool area was very clean and most enjoyable but if you needed a decent drink at the pool bar then you could wait a long time and when it did eventually arrive it would probably be the wrong drink anyway, depending on who was serving at the time.
We had the experience of there being a wedding during our stay and this really made us feel like prisoners in our own cell as everywhere was just rampaged by wedding guests, including the pool and restaurant area.
Overhaul a very enjoyable and relaxing holiday.

Excellent hotel, member of Pregio Hotels Group. Large grounds with beautiful swimming pool. Our room was lovely with a large terrace overlooking the swimming pool. There is a trulli village which houses some of the rooms as well as the restaurant. Substantial breakfasts. Car essential as it is in the middle of nowhere. Free access to a beach club on the coast at Savellitri which was very good. Bikes to take out for rides.

All in all very good value for money and perfect for kids as the grounds are large enough for them to run around in.

The directions off their website are a bit idiosyncratic, but we found it easily enough and the reception staff were very welcoming. We had a Masseria room which was stylish and well-equipped. After a longish day travelling we went to the restaurant quite early where the staff could not have been more welcoming or helpful. When asked what we wanted from the menu I replied "All of it"; and each night brought new delights. The wine list had breadth and depth from decent "vin ordinaire" (what's the Italian for "vin ordinaire") to some very good stuff. The night I asked for "something interesting" bought forth some good wine and accompanied by a quite amazing display of uncorking and decanting.
As the other reviews mention the pool is excellent and, yes, you do need a car but there's so much to see round there it would be a great pity not to include some of the sights such as Alborabello, the Grotte, Ostuni, Monopoli.
We'll be back.

SERVICE
Very friendly woman at reception, very nice staff at pool.
Cold, impersonal staff in restaurant.

ROOM
Lots of buildings with mazzeria spread around the area.
Room itself very sterile, almost the feel of a business hotel room. No Italian charme that we would have preferred.
Clean and OK, but nothing special.
We had two rooms connecting since there was no space for an extra bed for our son in the room.

POOL
Extremely uncomfortable sun loungers. Good big pool. Quiet and nice atmosphere. Great massages!!!

RESTAURANT
Breakfast: Wide choice but nothing special.
Dinner: "Wannabee fine dining". Food presentation looked really well, but the taste and raw material not good enough.
Unflexible and impersonal service. For example: It was a cold and windy evening when we had dinner there and it was not possible to sit inside and (at first) not possible to get a table close to the house instead of out on the terrasse in the wind because these table were reserved for half-board guests.

BEACH
Hotel cooperates with a beach club which means we can use the loungers etc. at that beach for free if we tell day before that we want to go there. A nice extra that we did not know about. Beach very nice, but crowded.

LOCATION
Very good for seeing the sights around. Easy to find hotels. Lots of sign showing how to drive from everywhere.

We enjoyed our 4 nights at this hotel which had a great pool, nice grounds and a welcoming and calm atmosphere. We were initially charmed to stay in one of the old trulli houses which was beautiful but did find the lack of air conditioning an issue. The trulli remained charming and well equipped. The service was very good and when we asked to move from the trulli because of a local wedding which was to be outside our window- this was done quickly and efficiently with no fuss. Incidently it was great to see the preparation and fun of the wedding.
The food was very good, although the piped music at breakfast was not to our taste and became a little wearing.
We had hired a car and enjoyed very much the local sights but do feel that without a car the location of the hotel would cause us problems.

We stayed at Tenuta Monacelle for seven nights in July, and overall it was an extremely pleasant experience but with some annoying service problems. We loved the remoteness of the hotel once we had found it, but it was extremely difficult driving in the dark at 11.00 at night from Bari airport. The hotel is well signed when you are close to it, but our satellite navigation could not find its exact location and there is a maze of hairpin-bend roads around it.
When we finally arrived we were shown to a masseria room which was lovely, but not what we had booked - which was a trullo. The night staff speak no English but fortunately I have a good command of Italian, and we were told we would be moved in the morning. The masseria room was excellent - very clean, efficient air-con and beautiful designer bathroom. Next morning, we were told to leave our bags and we would be moved at ten - the receptionist assuring us she would come and get us by the pool. By twelve, nothing had happened. At one, we were in the trullo minus the bags. Only after several phone calls in Italian did they arrive. And then - we realised that at over 100 degrees outside, the trullo did not have air conditioning!!! It was quaint inside with antique furniture and a tiny but clean bathroom but it was like an oven. There was not even a ceiling fan and it was full of mosquitos. We stuck it out for three miserable nights, during which we hardly slept, and finally asked to be moved. Reception informed us the only room (!) available was a deluxe masseria at 150 euros extra for the remaining three nights. We paid up just to get some chance of sleep and it was well worth it. The room was perfect - large, ice cold, his and hers bathrooms, jacuzzi and outside terrace with sofas for lounging.
The facilities at the hotel are very good - it is 'top spec' in terms of design and decoration, set in beautiful grounds of olives, oaks and lavendar. The swimming pool is very clean and beautifully situated, but the hotel does not capitalise on its captive audience as there is nothing within a ten minute drive. During the seven days, there was one event by the swimming pool - a 25th anniversary party to which guests weren't invited!! I agree with the previous review that the restaurant is over priced and quite formal - the quality of the food is good but I would prefer something more relaxed. It also played horrible piped music at both breakfast and dinner. Breakfast was excellent tho' - pastries, Puglian cakes, yoghurt, fruit, ham and cheese....
You definitely need a car to stay at Tenuta Monacelle and there are some nice places to visit within an hour - particularly Ostuni, Polignano al Mare and the amazing caves at Castellana Grotte, which make Cheddar Gorge look minute! A nice local restaurant is La Grande Quercia (the big oak) very popular with local Italian families with excellent food and great atmosphere.
So, all in all a lovely hotel but it needs to iron out some small but annoying service problems and don't stay in a trullo in the summer unless you like saunas!

I have rated this hotel as excellent as I have not felt so relaxed in a long time, however there are a few things that need a little polish.

Despite its out of the way location, Tenuta Monacelle is very easy to find due to excellent road signs. This place is a haven - it was an abbey and it certainly has an air of calm about it. There is a cluster of Truilli (or is it Trullo in plural?) where the restaurant is and you can also stay in a Truilli if you prefer. We opted for a Masseria in the grounds which was lovely. Each Masseria is modelled in the old style but is only a few years old. Decorated in a boutique style chic with a lovely big bed, bathroom with bath and shower, TV, fridge - very, very nicely done.

Breakfast was a dream - everything you could want and more - no cooked/hot food but everything else - lovely breads, cake, cereal, meats, cheeses etc etc. The location of the restaurant is wonderful and there is an air of chic about the place, The menu is rather grand and a bit nouveau (in other words, small) it is also rather pricey - around 80 euros for a meal. Wine is also really expensive and they don't seem to do caraffes of vino locale (seemed a bit 'sniffy' when I asked - perhaps that's a bit low class!!!) Anyway, don't let that put you off it is perfect for a very romantic stay.

The pool area is beautiful. You sunbathe on the grass surrounding the pool chaded by the oak trees. There is a bar with no blaring music - a serene experience. The pool is fairly new with a lovely spa style jacuzzi attached - a little bracing, but it was 35 when we were there so a welcome respite!

Join Paul in the morning for Yoga (foc) under the oak trees by the restaurant. He is very good and gives you specific exercises for any aches and pains you may have. He sorted my back out in two sessions. He also gives 1-2-1 yoga sessions for 15 euros and Shiatsu for 30 euros - highly recommended although he treats you on a towel by the pool (would have preferred a futon somewhere a little more private).

Although they welcome children I don't recommend it for children as there are mostly couples there who were complaining about the noise of children around the pool. I went as part of my honeymoon and it was perfect - now here's where the 'polish' is needed....

Tenuta Monacelle is a 5* location but in my opinion a few little tweaks would make it even more perfect. The desk staff could do with being a little bit more flexible and cheerful. I emailed to reserve a room but was told to call with a credit card to confirm, which I did. When I did this I was told that if I booked online at the Hotel's website it would be cheaper. I did this with my husbands credit card. As we were just married I hadn't changed my name so I was using my maiden name which was on my passport. I mentioned this on the email but this was not picked up, so when we arrived we had two rooms allocated to us. They were not happy, and kept us waiting in receotion for over 10 minutes while they sorted this out. When I pointed out my name on the email, they said 'ok ok' but were clearly not happy.

Anyway, one of the other desk staff smoothed things over and we were led to our room. At the end of our stay we tried to change money to pay for the Shiatsu I'd had - they refused to change money or to add money to our bill and give us some euros back. Eventually they added the price of the Shiatsu on my bill.

They also have conference facilities there. Which would not be a problem, however on one occasion a rather rowdy group ran down to the pool area, stripped off and proceded to run and jump all over the pool area and play football and water polo without any throught for the guests relaxing. There was also a 'let's have a go at the boss' incident which was entertaining, if not rather embarrassing!!

Anyway, all of that said, I would definitely go back - perhaps at a weekend when the conference facilities weren't being used (although they do weddings as well!).

Alberrobello is worth a visit although it is touristy. Take a drive through the countryside for the real fairy-tale/lord of the rings experience - it is a beautiful area to explore.
