Surrounded by olive orchard in a magnificent place lies the nice compound of this hotel that could be a lot better if it trained its personnel to smile and be attentive.
We arrived on a cold day in May. The girl at the desk did not smile much, I can imagine she was suffering from the damp coldness of this unusual cold week. The weather was unusual for the area but our rooms were cold. But also the welcoming atmosphere was as cold as the weather. A warm smile and maybe heating up the big chimney in the hall would make the ambiance warmer and and one would feel more welcomed The toons we cold so we asked at the desk if they could do something about it,before we went out for dinner. They replied they would and of course they did not. It was freezing in that room and only the next day did they something about it. Why not close the hotel if they do not heat it. They have lovely facilities and it is the a bit run down buildings have a romantic patina but is this one of the small luxury hotels of the world? I doubt it.

Il Melograno was our home base as we ventured around Puglia and Basilicata. It truly is instant relaxation from the moment one steps on the grounds. The rooms are cool and breezy and offer a just-right combination of antiques and art. The grounds are dotted with olive trees (two go back 800+ years), orange and lemon trees, vibrant bougainvillea and the most heady scent of jasmine. The heart of the masseria is the men and women that work there. From the front desk (Ilenia) to the spa (Deborah, Chiara & Mara) to the restaurant/bar (Viriana (our ray of sunshine!) and Antonio), we were surrounded by smiles and helpful suggestions and history lessons on the property. We took full advantage of the spa and ate our way through the Puglian specialties on the menu. And we of course took full advantage of the sublime local wines. As if things couldn’t get better, which they did, they have a sister hotel on the water with a can’t-be-beat view from the restaurant SaleBlu and a charming little beach club. We hated to leave so it’s not a question on “if” we’ll return but “when”. Two things to add.. If you are planning on visiting their beach club (Tamerici) I would recommend checking with the masseria as to it's opening date because it wasn't open when we were there. And second, I would highly recommend renting a car. There is so much to explore!! We took the train to Bari from Rome and rented a car from Avis which is an easy/quick five minute walk from the train station.

This is a luxury experience with all mod cons of indoor pool, beautiful rooms and great service.
It feels a bit impersonal, but everything is perfect.
The breakfast was a joy, lots of fresh pastry and good coffee.
The main downfall was the dinner, lacking atmosphere (being empty) and the most disappointing food in Puglia, where we ate fantastically overall. The dishes were completely overpriced and some of the past was not edible. Worst meal in the area and not justified for a hotel at 5 star standard. Eat elsewhere. The breakfast did make up for it and value for service overall was good.

First impressions are lasting; you walk through beautiful grounds of ancient olive trees and orange trees to get to the reception area. Staff is very friendly and accommodating. The room was spacious, with a very comfortable bed and amenities. The bathroom was large, with the only negative being a very small shower. Since guest rooms vary, ask for specifics if this is an issue. Some rooms are up some stairs (no elevator) and others are on ground level, with outdoor space. Breakfast was exceptional with an amazing array of food. There are spa services, and an indoor pool, as well as a gorgeous outdoor pool. Unfortunately the weather was too cool to take advantage of it. Apparently they have a sister hotel where you can use the beach, but we did not. Excellent restaurant on the premises, as well as an attractive bar. Located out in the country about a 10 minute car ride from the interesting town of Monopoli, so a car is necessary. Highly recommend!

Room tip: Ask about the room selection as they vary.

We stayed at the hotel at the recommendation of our travel guides and it was very nice. Our only regret was that we didn't have enough time at the hotel to fully enjoy the experience. The pools (indoor & outdoor) looked very nice, the restaurant and bar were great and the service was outstanding. We had dinner at the restaurant (nice but too fancy for us) and breakfast each morning (very good). We also had wine and snacks at the bar most nights and that was really good. Our bartender, Viriana, was very attentive and gave us terrific recommendations for the wine and food. It helped make our stay very memorable! We would definitely return and spend more time enjoying this very nice place.

Room tip: Two floors - try and stay on the higher floor as you can hear people above you if you stay on the 1st floor.
