“Family friendly in great location, needs updating”
Reviewed August 12, 2013

We stayed here on Friday 9th August. It was ideal location as our kids were competing in the lifesaving competition on the beach opposite on the Saturday. With 4 kids under 10 we always find it very difficult to find a hotel that doesn't want to charge through the ceiling or get us to book adjoining rooms so the strand was a pleasant surprise. We were given a family room with separate upstairs room for the kids. This had 3 single beds and when the staff seen we had 4 children they provided a camp bed(we never requested this and would have been happy for 2 to share a bed). We went straight to the beach and the kids came back soaking wet, once again the staff excelled and when they seen the kids wet provided us with extra towels! The view from our room was lovely and the room in general, although could do with updating was clean and comfortable. At breakfast in the morning the waitress on hearing our fussy 6 year old say there was nothing he liked, magically appeared with a box of coco pops!! Little things like this made our stay, happy kids make happy parents!!!

The Stand Hotel built over a century ago is situated in a picture perfect location lying at the foot of the very dramatic and unforgiving Slievemore and a blue flag beach just a few steps away.

Greeted with a warm welcome and a roaring fire the new Manager Alan Browne could not have done more to make us feel welcome this standard of hospitality continued throughout our stay.

Evening meal... as a vegetarian at a seaside location I was expecting the usual 1 token (v) option veg stir-fry or veg lasagne , but to my delight there was an option of Caspian pepper stuffed with wild mushrooms, couscous and basil. As soon as this was ordered Alan to my delight was straight over to over offering up many other suggestions, basically I could have whatever I wanted. The same was said for breakfast, a full array of veggie delights were offered with such enthusiasm; nothing was going to be too much trouble. Music to my ears dining here was not going to consist of a number of dry side orders stacked together to make a main or a breakfast of just cereal and toast.

Like most people these days travel can only be done on a budget so finding good value for money is hard done these days. The Strand Hotel has been allowed to slip behind the times and showing its age but with a some TLC, hard graft and plenty of imagination Alan will have this place back up to top standard in no time at all. Best of Luck Alan!!

Room Tip: Beach facing rooms at the front have an excellent view but expect some noise from the bar below.

The strand hotel is a hotel that could be great because of its location but sadly it's not. With some investment on the decor and over all appearance it could attract people but as it stands it looks tired and dull.
The food is average and rooms are very dated. The view is outstanding as you look onto the beach and would be great for family's with young children.
I really wish the investment was put in this hotel as I would stay here every year :(

Hotel is in a beautiful location. No bar or restaurant food available, even though it was advertised. No hot water in our room, had to go to another room to use a shower. Hotel was very cold. Staff were not very friendly.

In our holiday planning for Ireland, we looked for a few nights somewhere "windswept & interesting" on the ocean. This looked to be that place. Wrong. We were the only guests, and had one of the better rooms, but it was small, dingy & dated with only a tiny window to view what could have been an impressive view. It also turned out that the day we arrived the restaurant & bar were closed. Thank God for Helen, the owners friend, who made us very welcome, pulled pints & cooked some bar food for us.(she has her own lovely B&B - Ranevogue, Crossakiel, Kells ). And then there were the Midges (sandflies). Swarms of them, all over the island. We left after one night. Lots of potential unrealised.

We stayed in the Strand Hotel in Achill last weekend and we all thoroughly enjoyed our visit to this hotel. The staff and food were all excellent and we look forward to returning again soon for another visit.
