“Primitive Ireland”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 4, 2011

This is the old Ireland. Be sure to read about the history, the famine, before you go. It will mean more.
Take the Atlantic Coast Drive. See Keem Bay.
There is nothing like Achill Island on a clear day. You can't appreciate it if it is foggy and you can't see the sharp cliffs of the coast against the sea.
Find one of the blue flag beaches. Achill Island has many.
In a way, I don't want to share this but I wouldn't go to Ireland without seeing Achill and I don't think you should either.
We were there many years ago and, on the most part, it hasn't changed.
It is the best....of the west...

“Wild nature but overcrowded during bank holiday weekends”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 20, 2011

The landscape of the island is really impressive, epecially the cliffs in the Northwest. Their are may beautiful trails in all corners of the island and if the weather is fine you can hike for hours and days. The quality of accommodation and B&Bs is quite varying. Some guest houses are just very old and not renovated. It is worth to check the room before agreeing to stay. We have been there during a bank holiday weekend and everything was full and overcrowded. The few places to eat could not nearly cope with all the guests. So I recommend to avoid the island during such peak days.

“Self Catering Accomodation in Dereens”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 14, 2010

Spent a week in a self catering house in Dereens last month (August) and I have to say it was the best S-C accomodation I have ever stayed in. The website can be found at http://www.daft.ie/searchshortterm.daft?id=3392

The house holds up to ten people with 5 double bedrooms in all. Upstairs has two ensuites and the third bedroom has a bathroom across the hall. Power showers right through the house and the beds are comfy and large. If your numbers go beyond 10 there's a matching house right next door

Downstairs the kitchen, dining and sitting room area are all one large space. The open plan layout of the house meant we could all chat and have a laugh without being crowded into the one room. Never once did it feel crowded or squashy. Two couples had small children with them and they played happily away in the sitting room. The kitchen was the best equipped I have ever seen in a rental, lots of counter space and every item you could possibly need was to hand.

House was spotless on arrival, and there was even some bits like washing powder, dishwasher tablets stocked in the kitchen. We left the ones we brought for the next group to use.

There's a wee pub 5 minutes walk away (Guinness is excellent!), but shops etc in Achill Sound are a few minutes away by car. If you follow the road along the Atlantic Drive your treated to some amazing views of the ocean - we did it on foot out jogging, then by bicycle and also by car. Was breathtaking each time!

Without a doubt we'll be coming back again and have already rebooked for next year. Owner was great to deal with both by email and by phone. I have already recommended this place to several friends.
