“A secret gem”
Reviewed August 14, 2012

I visited Achill's Secret Garden on a recent trip to Achill and was enchanted. From the moment we were given the well laid out guide to the garden I knew I was in for something special. As we moved through the 'rooms' each one revealed a new delight. And then to end it all in the old boathouse looking out over the sea was perfectly lovely. I've been recommending it to anyone who's visiting Achill ever since!

“Perfect peace and a warm welcome”
Reviewed June 10, 2012

We went to Achill in search of rest, ideally by the water. We knew we had found something special when we saw photos of the library room with its beautiful bed looking out on to water. From the minute we arrived to the moment we left, Doutsje made us feel so welcome. The bedroom was just as seen in the photos and was cleverly designed to provide comfort, beautiful views and meet practical needs. Everything was spotlessly clean and fresh, and Doutsje immediately brought us fresh milk and chocolates to go with our tea. Breakfast was delicious - Doutsje even had her first go at making poached eggs (perfectly done!) when we asked for them, and Willem's French toast was delicious. Doutsje pointed us in the direction of great music one evening and came along herself to meet her musician friends. We instantly felt part of the community with her guidance. The house and garden are a treat for the senses - within hours of arriving we felt more relaxed than we had for months. There is something magical about sitting in the library looking out onto the water.... Try it for yourselves! Willem and Doutsje are genuine, fascinating people - we loved their approach to life and felt honoured to experience it for a short while. We will be back for more! Thank you for your generosity and warmth.

If you are just visiting the garden, take your time and wander. Willemstad and Doutsje have created a beautiful sanctuary in harsh conditions - it's amazing how they have managed to nurture such a wide variety of plants on sparse Achill. It's worth the entrance fee!

“A labour of love!”
Reviewed September 15, 2011

If you appreciate gardening, art, conservation, dedication, labours of love or simply human endeavour you will leave heartened from a visit to this very special little oasis at the start/end of the spectacular Atlantic Drive that hugs Achill's southern coastline. Don't be put off by the seemingly steep entrance fee (€7-8 for adults)... by the end of your visit you'll consider it money well invested! The hospitality of your hosts and the cup of tea and cake (worth the entrance fee alone) in the boat house at the end of your ramble is a tonic in itself! The rave comments in the guest book are assurance, should you need it, that it wasn't just you who got such a good dose of wellbeing from such a short visit.

“I like this wonderfull garden more than Kilmore Abbbey”
Reviewed August 11, 2011

We enjoyed staying with the friendly William en Doutsje at Achill Secret Garden very much. They both were very hospitable.
The beautiful and special library B&B room is neat and cosy with a big comfortable bed. Divided from the room there is a private bathroom including soaps available. Out the window is a breathtaking scenery on a creek and the breakfast is perfectly arranged. (full Irish breakfast, fresh fruit etc.)
The people on Achill are very friendly too and the environment is pure.

Coming into the garden I was a bit suprised by the admission fee but certainly it is worth it every euro! The garden is like a fairytale garden. What surprised me was the art in it and at the end the the. coffee, cookies and cake.
