Returned again to this wonderfully eccentric and delightful eatery for the 7th time. Whilst some may be put off initially by the "different" decor and sometimes strangely translated menu it is a place we find to be fun, flavoursome and fascinating. The food is excellent, with each course proving exceptionally tasty (the crocodile, kangaroo & friends dish was tempting - again - but not chosen this time); the host is interesting and very much into giving you an enjoyable experience ; and the view of the Minaun cliffs is perfect. We'll be visiting again!

This was sadly a disappointment for us after reading all the reviews. We only went here to eat, and did see how this could be an interesting place for some - but for us it was just a case of someone trying too hard and missing the point of what great regional food is all about - showcasing fresh local ingredients by cooking them simply and perfectly. Far too many dishes on the menu - including a lot of ingredients that must be frozen (kangaroo and other exotic meats), flavour combinations that just don't work, and at least one too many ingredient in every dish. We wanted to love it - but just couldn't. Plus points were great scones and a great view - and it definitely livens up an evening!

Officially a B & B. it is more like a boutique hotel. Quite exceptional food, a large menu, beautifully cooked and presented. Could put many a fancy London restaurant to shame. Only carp is that the portions are vey large; but saying "no" to the large starters and opting for the minis plus saying no to the irresistible gratuitous pre pre starters might be the solution! The bedrooms are themed and great fun. Beds are blissfully comfortable. Spotless. Engaging Swiss owner who does much of the cooking made this a real and wholly unexpected find.

I was absolutely blown away by the level of service I received at Ferndale. Having decided on the spur of the moment to visit Achill Island for a night, my boyfriend and I booked a room at the Ferndale because it was the first guesthouse we rang that was open off-season - lucky us! We arrived down in Achill on a beautiful sunny Saturday to absolutely stunning views. We were greeted warmly at Ferndale by Jon the owner and Mowgli the dog. Jon informed us that as the guesthouse was not busy that weekend he had decided to upgrade us to a superior room for free. We were led into the Arabian Nights themed room - beautifully furnished with the most comfortable bed I have ever had the pleasure of sleeping on. The day was then spent exploring the beauty of Achill and it's numerous beaches. Arriving back at the guesthouse we were met by mouthwatering scents escaping from the kitchen - despite declining Jon's offer of dinner at the guesthouse when we made the booking, he was more than willing to accommodate us when we changed our minds - what followed was the most delicious, decadent dining experience I have ever had! Jon is a fantastic chef that makes excellent use of the range of fresh seafood available to him and combines it with sensational flavours in what he describes as fusion cooking inspired by medieval and ancient techniques. I ordered fish for appetiser and main, sampling prawns, crayfish, scallops, monk fish & salmon. Joh brought out little surprise extras like home-made chive scones with smoked-salmon cream, sorbet and even a quail breast to sample! He had an extensive (and very affordable) wine menu and was at hand to advise. There was absolutely no pressure on us to finish up and we spent a 3 hours in food heaven. We didn't think anything could top this until it came to breakfast the next day which was magnificent. The whole time we were there Jon and Heidi went out of there way to ensure we wanted for nothing. They take a lot of pride in their establishment (and rightly so) and Jon's passion for the island and everything it has to offer definitely rubbed off on us - we'll be back again!
