Alte Muhle Thomas Horeth
Certificate of Excellence

Restaurant details
Good for: Special occasions, Business meetings, Local cuisine, Romantic
Dining options: Dinner, Late Night, Reservations
Description: The restaurant is placed in an historic castle mill from the 11th century. "Alte Mühle" Thomas Höreth is located in a sunny side valley of the Moselle. Steep terraced vineyards reach close to the mill. Pilgrims used to eat here in ancient times when they walked to the chapel of St. Matthias. Today, as in the past, several small and larger cozy rooms invite you to feast, enjoy and linger. In the warm season tables and chairs are set in the ancient courtyard and in the mills garden under the flowering oleander.

At the recommendation of our B&B we went for dinner to Der Alte Mühle in Kobern-Gondorf. We had already peeked in at one of our hiking trips and had then asked to see the menu. Although the menu was very difficult to read, the place looked interesting and cosy and we were curious and decided to give it a try.

We had not made reservations and the waitress guided us to a small side room, which looked more like a corridor than a dining room and of which the ambiance did not impress us.

The menu is an absolute nightmare: it is almost impossible to read the pages full of 'hand written' text with exaggerations, irrelevant remarks, childish drawings and texts that are an insult for the intelligence of the average guest. Apparently the owners are very satisfied with themselves and the food they offer, which I believe it is up to the guests to opinion about and not to the restaurant owners.

As many people in this region do we had been walking all day and were thirsty, fancied a beer, however we were told the Alte Mühle does not serve beer. That does not feel very welcoming at all.

Despite the high prices of the dishes on the menu no appetiser was offered, not even some bread with butter. Of course it is possible to order an 18 (!!!) euros salad as a starter but we decided not to do this, also because the arrogant ambience of the restaurant and its waiters. So we ordered a main course: 3 types of fish with linguini pasta and spinach.

The fish, which was fillet, came with a fish knife, which of course was totally unnecessary. The pasta/spaghetti however was served without a spoon. Have you ever tried to wind spaghetti around your fork with a fish knife instead of a spoon? Good luck! It struck us highly that a restaurant that pretends to be so good and with outrageously high prices does not even know how to eat fish and how to eat pasta. And on top of that does not seem to know how to prepare fish: of the 3 types of fish 2 were overcooked and we doubted strongly that they were fresh.

It is a pity that some hotel owners seem to recommend this restaurant to their guests, as I believe there are many places in the region where one can eat much better quality food for much less money. The price-quality balance of the Alte Mühle is completely wrong, the service is arrogant and unfriendly and the quality of the food is very mediocre and definitely not worth the high prices. If you insist on spending a lot of money, be treated in an arrogant way and leave unsatisfied and with a hangover (but not from the beer!) then this is the place to be.

“Amazing renovated mill, wonderful wine tasting”
Reviewed June 16, 2011

There are many nice restaurants along the Mosel valley between Koblenz and Cochem but Alte Mühle is probably the most amazing one, since 30 years Thomas Höreth, his family and his team have been renovating an old mill and host wine tasting and gastronomy restaurant. All 20000 bottles of their production are either consumed or sold on the spot... Great evening !

“One of the most romantic restaurants in Germany!”
Reviewed November 6, 2010

If you search for a really romantic restaurant then you have to go to "Alte Mühle". Especially in atumn or winter you will find the old Germany of the Brothers Grimm there.

Such a place is really difficult to find in Germany because most of the old restaurants are not authentic anymore. The restaurant and the hotel are situated in side valley of the Mosel valley, very calm and surrounded by nice vineyards.

The best is to start with a walk at a very nice track called "Kobener Burgpfad" (http://www.traumpfade.info/traumpfade-rhein-mosel-eifel/mosel/koberner-burgpfad.html). The finish is near to Alte Mühle. Take an aperitif at the fireplace of the fireplace room and enjoy later the good wine and food of Thomas's vineyard and restaurant.

For those who like to stay over night (which is highly recommended):
- luxury version: the hotel of Thomas Hoerth is amazing (situated at the end of the valley in the forest, 5 min walk from Alte Mühle) or
- middle classversion: Zur goldenen Kupferkanne (situated in Kobern-Gorndorf, 10 min walk from Alte Mühle)

Just enjoy the old Germany!
