Hotel Paulushof is a small pleasant hotel, nicely situated along the Rursee (lake). Hotel room was good and spacious with view on the lake from the balcony for all the rooms in that row. The beds were comfortable, we brought our own pillows with us though for extra comfort. The asmosphere and decoration of the hotel is indeed somewhat oldfashioned, but this is the style you will find in lots of hotels/restaurants in this area. It's rather typical for the Eifel and can be cosy too. Breakfast was good and complete. A la carte dining was tasteful and more refined than in other restaurants in nearby places. Staff was friendly, the pool was nice for a relaxing swim and the area is perfect for walking of cycling. Most restaurants in this area close their kitchen at 9 pm, also the restaurant of this hotel but we could enjoy some drinks on the terrace in front of the hotel till 11 pm (last call). In the evenings there's not much to do, also in the bigger surrounding places, so this destination is most perfect for day activities. We were fortunate to have great summer weather during our stay of 3 nights and could also relax at the natural pool of the lake with nice grounds. Enjoyed it for a few days!

We stayed at the Paulushof recently. My feelings are neutral.

The plus points: Clean, tidy, good size rooms. Powerful shower, good hot water. Easy access to the hotel from the large adjoining car park. Pleasant position. A good room rate including buffet breakfast. Busy hotel. Not unfriendly staff.
The neutral points: Not friendly staff. Restaurant closed for a la carte dinner due to chef having 'broken bone' (buffet offered instead for flat 16 Euros). Slightly tired decor majoring on shades of brown and off white. p.s. - I don't think they knew we were there!
The irritating points: General noise from rooms above including crystal clear 'ones and twos' bathroom sound effects and (ok out of the hotel's control admittedly) - the weather and the fact that the 'tide was out' in the lake opposite during the few days of our stay spoiling the 'overlooking the lake' vista somewhat due to lack of water.

I've tried to be objective in my view. For what we paid it was ok. Efficient, perfunctory, going through the motions. Ample continental breakfast. There were no characters there though and thus little charm. The lack of restaurant service wasn't explained to us as a problem, we were simply offered the buffet on arrival which we declined and subsequently drove back into Simmerath every night (15 mins) and ate in a 'good find' restaurant there. Next day we noticed an A4 paper 'broken bone' sheet on the hotel board outside and with an almost full hotel; why hadn't they hired in a replacement chef? The hotel majors on it's food and hospitality in its publicity and must have lost quite a lot of custom and revenue with the restaurant in all but 'closed' mode.

Maybe we just hit the Paulushof during a bad time with grotty weather and low lake water. It's worth a try if you're a 'glass half full' type. Wi-fi would be nice and a means of making tea or coffee in the room - oh and some better soundproofing.

In general terms, we were there for a purpose but if you had been on holiday the hotel would not have lifted your spirits. A couple of the other local restaurants and a bar were either closed or for sale. There is a useful and friendly modern tourist office opposite but despite the hotel being busy there weren't many people around considering it was mid July.....

A real gem the hotel was lovely the staff were really helpful and the pool and sauna were great. We had a stunning view over the lake from our spacious rooms. This area is great for walking, cycling, canoeing and sailing. I would love to go back and spend more time here.

Room Tip: Most rooms have balconies overlooking the lake

We only spent one hight at this hotel - we wish it had been more. It's a great location for walking/cycling and we could not fault the hotel.
We were particularly impressed with the quality of the evening meal, particularly the presentation.
Hopefully we will come back - for a longer stay next time.

The hotel is in a great location on the lake , but it's decor is rather tired and old fashioned. The restaurant is good and the service was very good. The staff are helpful and friendly.

Extraordinary country hotel within a hour of Cologne, Aachen and the Moselle. On the banks of lakes in a Blue Ridge type setting. Heavily wooded hills, non-touristy (at least in fall and winter).

Good sized rooms with single less than $50 per night and double at around $80.00. Excellent restaurant with local game in the winter. Easy drive through the Huertgen Forest (beginning of the Battle of the Bulge) as well as near castles and palaces and the quintessential German town, Monschau. Has a small but fun Christmas Market as well as easy access to those in Monschau, Aachen and the Ahr Valley (red wine growing region just south).

Has excellent indoor pool for the winter as well as direct access to the lake, which has boating excusions in non-winter months. Beautiful for walking and for complete silence.

Has a number of weekend packages including food and wine.

Highly recommend for a great long weekend in a non-touristy setting. Car essential. Has elevator, though!
