Owner description: Directly located at the famous chalk cliff Koenigsstuhl the National Park Centre KÖNIGSSTUHL offers a very special experience of nature. Together with your family or friends - the National Park Centre offers you an enjoyable day whatever the weather. A world of mysteries is waiting for you to be discovered in an indoor exhibition area of 2000 m² and an outdoor area of 28000 m².

Loved the view from the bottom of the chalk cliffs. Also here is a center where you can go in and experience the nature and learn how it developed over the years. Headsets available in many languages. A little bit of problem if you walk too fast from one area to the next inside, because the headsets are sensitive to where you stand and sometimes the narrator would break off in the middle of a sentence and start talking about the next scene.

The famous chalk cliff "Königsstuhl" on Rügen is certainly worth a visit. A good starting point is the visitor center of the national park, a few kilometers outside of Sassnitz, easily reachable by car (public parking available) or bus. Near the big car park and the bus stop is the entrance to the visitor center of the National Park which a few years ago became part of a Natural World Heritage Site. The visitor center charges entrance fee, but it is worth knowing for those on a tight budget that it is not necessary to go to the visitor center if you just want to see the famous chalk cliff from below, at the beach, or from a vista point a bit to the side. From the big parking lot starts the "Abstieg", the long and steep stairway down to the beach. This is a wooden construction, relatively easy to handle, but probably not suitable for folks with a heart condition or who have difficulties with longer walks. Anyway, this part is free and takes you to some spectacular views down to the beach, to the spot right below the Königsstuhl and the neighboring cliffs.

The visitor center is worth the entrance fee too, though. From there, you get to go a vista point and platform right on top of the Königsstuhl. Also, the park outside the visitor center offers a very worthwhile and well-detailed example of interpretation and explanation of the famous paiting of the Königsstuhl by German romantic painter Caspar David Friedrich. And the visitor center itself offers a 15 minute video presentation about the chalk cliffs. And an interactive exhibition about the national park and the natural history of the cliffs, the ocean and the environment. The entrance to the exhibiton can easily be overlooked, in the visitor center. Do not miss it, once you are in there.

We went there by foot, from Hagen and we enjoyed the easy walk (3 km) through the Jasmund National Park. There is no fee to see the Koenigsstuhl, only for the exhibition.
