“Rare opportunity”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 16, 2013

Having been inside an American sub at Pearl Harbour we only visited as this was a rather unusual sight- A British submarine (HMS Otus) with a Jack flying in German waters. Aparently a German businessman purchased the sub. It is rather odd to be inside a sub with all the British instrumentation but with museum signs in German only, which is a shame. One can not imagine the crew spending such long periods in this confined space, it certainly gives one a dose of reality when you see the sleeping quarters and the missile rooms. A must see in Sassnitz-mind your head.

“A bit of a surprise ...”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 6, 2013

Must admit, I was bit suprised to find HMS Otus moored in a German port on the Baltic Sea, proudly flying the Union Jack! Still haven't got to the bottom of quite how if got there!

Apparently this submarine was a leader in its class a the time. It's quite interesteing to compare and contrast with U-995 at Laboe; it's much bigger and everything is in English. It felt a bit odd! Everything has been well-preserved inside and there is an English leaflet available to guide you. The experience is augmented by sound effects, which seemed to come from an American movie, and the film 'Das Boot', which made things even more surreal!

Note - to pass thorugh the compartments, you have to move through the original circular doors, which are awkward to say the least. Also, watch out for low instrumentation - a bang to the head really hurts - trust me!

Highlight was the ability to look through the two periscopes. Alas, the conning tower is off-limts.

Entry is €6 plus a fee for photos. Recommended. It certainly gives you something to do in Sassnitz!

“British Submarine”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 8, 2012

If you have never been into the submarine go for it. The speakers kept inside the submarine gives real feel of war. Don't miss to look out side from periscope. Entry + Photography fee per adult is 6+1.

“Nice museum, unsual to be inside a submarine”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 16, 2012

If you never got the chance to see the innards of an old submarine and always wanted to do that, this place is for you. You can walk from back to front, things and their purposed are well described. Photography is allowed and the staff is friendly and helpful. Can be a bit crowed in the weekends, since the space inside is limited and many families take their kids to see it.

“Interesting museum of a British submarine in Germany”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 4, 2011

The British Submarine is located in Sassnitz City Harbour only a few steps away from the ferry dock. To get there from Binz you can take one of the ferries provided by the Reederei Ostee Tour or drive. As mentioned before, it is easy to get mislead if you don't pay attention and believe it is a German submarine. However although it is a british sub, you are able to go through the entire vessel and get a feel of how it was like to serve on a sub regardless of the country of origin. The submarine was commissioned in 1963 and sold in the early 1990's to become a museum

Going to the museum as part of the trip to see the chalk cliffs is easy to do. by boat. The first stop the boat makes is to Sassnitz and you can pick up a later boat as they go in the same direction. If you're a fan of military history this would be a good place to visit if you are in the area and want time away from the beach crowds.
