“Fantastic place for one night while driving through”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 27, 2012 via mobile

We were travelling as a family with young kids seeking for an overnight hotel. This means we did neither expect nor required a lot but our stay greatly exceeded our expectations.
THE PROFITS
Wow! Such a friendly greeting, immediate accommodation, large room, large and comfortable bath, kids bed was already installed, we received a short info on the facilities while somedody took care of the bags..
The restaurant was open for dinner by the time we came down so we enjoyed our meal.
Large choice of satellite channels; large, safe kids playground; sauna, small pool for 4-5 persons - just the water was a little cool.
The breakfast is great, fresh fruits, great variety.
Free wifi with adequate speed.
We were surprised and really happy!
THE CONCERNS
The hotel is just next to the road so watch your kids!!!

This property is double-listed for the town, be sure and read both hotels (unless this gets Trip Advisor to combine them). Also, note how going back 6 or 7 years virtually every English-speaker had negative comments about the restaurant (I agree) while all native, German, speakers did not. This goes to different expectations and as an ExPat, I can understand both points. The hotel is good, very good for the price. Surprising that in-room coffee/tea maker is not included but otherwise, good free wi-fi, comfortable beds and better-than-average TV choices. The Spa, including fitness center, sauna, indoor pool, is quite nice, if a little small when it's being used by more than a few people. The restaurant is, as many have mentioned, the weak spot. Very expensive for both the area and for the clientele. Few tables were having wine, for example. Rather than marking-up the wine by an unheard of 400-500% (standard is usually around 100%), maybe a fairer price would move more product for them. Likewise, offerings for just a glass (some people don't want a whole bottle) is extremely limited and once again, expensive. My suggestion: enjoy the hotel, buy the breakfast which at EUR 15.00 is a very good deal and find some other place for dinner. If enough people do this, maybe hotel management will bring the restaurant up to the same level that the rest of the property offers.

The hotel has all the right amenities but lacks spirit. The staff are distracted and unaware of customers. No water or wine offered with the meal and the half board menu was too restrictive.
On leaving the somewhat dull restaurant at the end of a meal the so called sommelier was laid across the food serving area, very inviting!
The hotel needs a wake up call. It could be so much better.
The accommodation is fine but top prices require top service to match.
Not a place to visit for more than one night.

We stayed at this hotel last night; we wish we could have stayed longer. It’s a beautiful hidden gem, near Wendelstein Mountain. Staff were efficient and welcoming; accommodating all our needs with a smile (including complementary late check out so we can indulge in their spa before we head to Munich airport for our long late night flight). Few types of rooms, we were in the Superior Room with a balcony. Reasonable priced with internet connection free of charge. Parking outside the hotel was free and secured. The restaurant is serving gourmet meals, small portions, pretty expensive! Breakfast cost 15 euro! The spa was of a good standard with nice size swimming pool and dry and wet saunas (only had to remind the receptionist to turn on the saunas; which meant half an hour wait till it was hot enough to enter).
Overall, it was great experience. Warmly recommended!

We stayed at the Alpenhof for 5 days over Christmas. We booked half board as we did not want to be looking for restaurants over the Christamas period. Good choice: the food was superb, like going out for a gourmet meal every evening. A cross between table d'hote and a la carte: no choice of first and dessert courses, but a choice of main. Not for vegetarians, but beautifully cooked and presented food. They provided an English translation of the menu each day and a "what's on, weather report" etc folder each morning at breakfast. Breakfasts were also lovely: masses of choice, what you would expect, but prawns and salmon maybe a bit unusual, home made preserves and a wonderful variety of bread.
Quiet - few guests at this period - and we had no car, which would be useful as the hotel is 30 minutes walk from Bayrischzell. We walked there and back along a lovely path away from the road, but we like walking.
The hotel is beautifully decorated, has an indoor pool, sauna etc which is exquisite and being sometimes on our own there it felt as if we were in our own mansion. A fitness centre and beauty parlour which we did not use. In the season a free ski bus which stops outside the hotel runs frequently up to the ski slopes (we went to watch and drink in the views of the Alps - and some gluhwein too) and the train to/from Munich stops about half a mile (max) away. Runs every hour, even on Christmas day. You can also walk the short distance to the Wendelstein cable car - see image from the top.
The staff were friendly, attentive and helpful. We were lucky with fresh snow - lovely dry snow you can walk in all day and not get wet - on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. The surrounding mountains were magical. Schliersee down the valley - a few stops by train - is a very picturesque town, well worth a visit.
A note about getting there by train. Remember to get off at Osterhofen. We forgot and went to Bayrischzell, the end of the line. After 6pm, no taxis around, but the local butcher, when we asked about a taxi, said, wait a few moments while I close and I will take you. We are used to such friendliness in the Middle East, not so much in Europe.
We do not regret missing out on our first choice - Mittenwald - as this area is unspoilt and the hotel a gem.

I chose Der Alpenhof due to its location on a route I was traveling from France to Austria, and stayed 2 nights here to break up the drive. I found out about Der Alpebhof because it is a Small Leading Hotel. I am rarely disappointed with any of the SLH member hotels, however, I was in for a real treat at this location. The owners of the hotel treat clients as pampered guests, catering to them in a hospitable, yet discreet manner. The staff is excellent, the cuisine first rate and the room that I had was exquisite. I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel to the most discerning traveler and look forward to a return visit - hopefully before too long a time!

Der Alpenhof is not a bad hotel, but it’s not a great hotel either. The first surprise -that you can’t find in the guide or the website- is that the hotel borders a very fast road, where cars routinely drive at speeds above 100km/h. Standard rooms (300euros/night) have no bath, but just a shower for lack of space. Opening the windows is not an option, the noise from the road is simply too loud. The room price doesn’t include breakfast.
Internet is free, satellite channels are numerous and well organized on the television.
The staff is very friendly, but has obviously been instructed by management to favor the regular local customers. The food is nice, but very salty.
I would not recommend this hotel to my friends.
