“A new type of skiing holiday”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 10, 2012

We recently returned from a holiday to the newly opened BlackRock Ski Lodge. This trip opened our eyes to what a ski holiday could be like. All our previous experiences have been of a mass produced almost military 'Ski-athon's' that left you more tired after than when you arrived. Holidays that lead to you having to compromise on at least one aspect of the trip, Serivice, accomodation, food or even stresses through transfers.
What we were introduced to was a Chalet and hosts that enabled you to relax and trust that you are truey getting something that is different and a cut above. We experienced attention to detail throughout our time there, in the purpose built amazing Chalet, the transfers (in crazy weather conditions), the in-house ski fittings (where the ski rental guys come to you!) and ski guiding arranged through Paul and Lizzy, it was top notch. So trusting were we that we also allowed BlackRock to introduce us to Ski touring with a local guide (Walking up the mountain with skins on the soles of your ski's & then off-pesting back)..Somethiing we would never had considered before last week..
If you are looking for a 5 star experience in the hands of genuine people who care about your experience from start to finish, who seem to have a passion for sport and the mountain life then BlackRock is a for you. They will be seeing us again.

If you want an unforgettable holiday in Chamonix or the Alps, Blackrock will provide.

I recently organised my first summer trip to the Alps with some friends. We all knew what we wanted to do, but we didn’t know how. Fortunately, Paul and Lizzie, who own and run Blackrock, were at hand to help as soon as I called to discuss the idea.

In our case, we wanted to try to climb a few mountains. Before we had even booked our flights, Lizzie had sorted out our equipment, a superb guide, and had suggested a great route. The only thing we had to do when we arrived was to admire the stunning view of Mont Blanc from the Chalet over a drink. Everything went to plan perfectly.

When we weren’t out and about, the chalet was the perfect respite. It is very comfortable with a warm feel to it. If you want to go out for the evening, its not too far from Les Houches town centre so you can easily wander giddily back to the chalet after sampling the local hospitality.

What I hadn’t realised before I went to Chamonix was how much else there is to do in addition to the famous climbing and skiing: cycling, white water rafting and kayaking, paragliding, hiking, horse riding or mountain spas for a more relaxing day. I rapidly realised that Paul & Lizzie can organise all of this for you; they both have a wealth of knowledge and they only recommend contacts who they know are good as they have used them themselves. At the end of our trip, I left only with the desire to return as soon as possible.

I gathered that this is a new business for Paul and Lizzie and that they are doing their best to make their guests’ holidays as easy and as memorable as they can. They are doing a cracking job and deserve your support!

A beautiful gem nicely placed in the heights of Les Houches. What a great surprise to be discover this brand new chalet built and decorated with a lot of taste, mixing the traditional with the most modern technology and design. Super infrastructure including after ski delights such as a beautiful fireplace to snuggle up by at the top of the chalet, a wine cellar corner, a sauna, a jacuzzi outside with quite the view over the alps! The rooms are spread across several levels of the chalet and each have a character of their own; allowing for families, couples and friends to choose the best set up adapted to their group size. This is what you can call pre-empting guest needs and wants comfort wise to its max!

Lizzie and Paul are wonderful hosts with a lot of experience and knowledge when it comes to the area and breathe energy and pure fun. They know how to guide you to make sure your stay is enjoyable and most of all what YOU want it to be like. There are unlimited possibilities as to activities organized both in the summer and in the winter. Whether you are there for rest and relaxation or to improve your performance in summer or winter sports you will find what you need.

Lizzie and Paul, thanks for this great stay. We hope to be back for a triathlon or boot camp soon!

I had not previously appreciated how much I had missed out on by only going to the alps to ski. Thankfully Paul and Lizzie have a real enthusiasm for making the most of everything that is available and the knowledge to go with it. I have always felt that the really adventurous stuff is a bit inaccessible and not available unless you know how. Well they know how to get involved and if they don't they'll find out and then probably want to join in too!

Next time I would happily make no plans at all and just see what suggestions they come up with each day: "What a great day for ..... learning to iceclimb, ski touring up the Valley Blanche, Paragliding, rock climbing, canyoning etc (delete as applicable)" and then actually making it happen rather than wistfully wondering what it would be like.

Something I learned on this trip is that only doing exciting things (things that are potentially dangerous) can give your mind a rest from the 101 worries of every day life. When the only thing that matters is what you do in the next few seconds, because potentially your future depends on them, nothing else matters. You can focus on the moment to the exclusion of everything else, and really enjoy it.

Then you get back to the warm, dry security of Black Rock at the end of the day; put your feet up with a beer and listen to everyone else talking about the moments in the day when they forgot anything else in the world mattered.

The lodge itself is incredibly comfortable, and brand new. The people running the lodge were really friendly - and also seemed to know the area really well... that meant when we asked about mountain activities they gave us the 'inside track' on the local area, and put us in touch with top-class people when necessary - like a great climbing guide (they also lent us a climbing book/ a waterproof/ some gear!!!).

The level of comfort was exactly what I wanted when I came off the mountain - food and all the rest was great.

Highly recommended if you're serious about getting on the mountain, and serious about comfort when off it.
