“You will want to return year after year”
Reviewed July 15, 2009

Having just read a review of LePaloume I just had to put my own opinion on record. In June this year my husband, daughter and son-in-law visited Jane and Felix at LePaloume for i think about the 9th time! The first time my husband and I visited, my daughter was about 6 years old. We had always said that we would never go back to the same place twice. Well, 16 years later, we are still visiting approximately every other year, and the more we visit the more we just love LePaloume and in particular the wonderful people who run it. We even chose Lepaloume for our honeymoon - how is that for a recommendation!

I would thoroughly recommend Lepaloume to anyone who wants to "get away from it all", and have a thoroughly relaxing holiday. The farm itself is beautifully located, and a very short drive from other villages and towns. The mountains are just wonderful, and the area is fantastic if you enjoy walking.

My husband and two and half year old son booked a self catering property on this 'organic' farm in the Pyrenees last summer (07). We were to spend two weeks on the farm and were very excited. However the owner was less than helpful, rude, and out to make as much money as she could from her guests. We were never so glad to leave.

We did not get the cottage of our preference and so had to move mid stay. That was okay and we agreed that in advance. However one would think this factor would have been taken into account when she was dishing out the extra charges.

We sent an email prior to our arrival to let know that my husband's brother would be with us for three nights - we were informed that she would be charging a significant extra for sheets (to put on the sofabed!). Her website said this charge was for a week, when i queried it I was told curtly that the charge would remain the same.

The location is beautiful, the view is stunning, the cottages are restored very well, the decor is minimal, they are relatively clean (though other guests were not happy with cleanliness). However our holiday was marred by the endless 'extras' or sneaky way the owner was earning extra money from the business. Here is the list
1. Extra charge for wireless
2. Extra charge for bedlinen
3. Extra charge for satellite tv (which only works in one of the houses)
4. Extrat charge for tv (provided but of no use without satellite if you are not french speaking)
5. Extra charge for dvd player
6. Extra charge for towels
7. Extra charge for bread delivery (cost of bread plus commission; roughly double the cost price)
8. Extra charge for radio/cassette player

Regarding the 'organic' nature of the farm, my visiting brother in law who runs an organic farm in Ireland could not find evidence of the organic farm during his extensive walks of the land. There was fruit rotting on trees but other than that he found no evidence of anything being grown or harvested on the farm.

Furthermore the owner was rude whenever we questioned an 'extra' charge. Our bill of extras for the first week was 204 euros. This did include 70 for the nice communal meal we enjoyed on the terrace of the main house.

The delivery of bread to your doorstep was a necessary extra incurred as the long drive to the village every morning would have been an effort.

Further more we are still awaiting our security deposit to be returned to us. (150 euro) It was promised that it would be posted on.

When they initially enquired they were told the availability of the cottages and they decided to book and stay in the smaller 1 bedroom cottage and move to the larger 2 bedroom cottage for the 2nd week. We made no charge for an extra bed and linen for the child.
In our terms & conditions (sent with the booing form) it clearly states the maximum occupancy for each cottage. The smaller cottage being large enough to accommodate 2 adults and a young child. You can imagine our shock when only a few days before their arrival we had a telephone call from them stating that his brother was going to stay with them in the smaller cottage - 4 in all! Of course we insisted that, as his brother was going to sleep on the settee, that linen was needed and we charged for this.

The list of provisions & services is sent to all clients well in advance of their stay. All extras are optional. Bread & croissants, orders change daily, are delivered to each cottage to their door at cost which includes the delivery charge made by the baker and not a commission. In fact we often loose out as orders are sometimes not wanted when guest have forgotten to tell us the day before of any changes. We absorb these costs.

We are registered “Agricultures” and farm sheep & poultry. We grow our own hay and are self-sufficient in fruit, vegetables and nuts – these and our free range meat and eggs are used in our meals.

I am never rude to guests though they were very reluctant to settle their bill. Their security deposit was posted, as requested by them, to an address in France on the 25th. July.

We pride ourselves that our cottages are spotlessly clean when our guests arrive.
The 2 families in the other cottages who stayed during the same time as Ecocarer are both returning again this year! If you are interested in their comments you only have to contact me.
