If you had not read all these 5 star reviews you would probably miss this restaurant. It is on the main street into the old town but has a very nondescript frontage, and no outside space. Inside, the decor is idiosyncratic, but don't be put off. The menu is displayed on blackboards - 19.50 when we ate lunch here in September 2012. I dare say everything here is probably excellent. We had salmon and goats cheese salad to start, and then bourride de lotte and fish a la planxa for mains, all delicious. The plates are decorated by the chef using a sort of vinegar paste, a speciality of the house, and they are superb. You almost imagine it is part of the plate, until you realise you can eat it! Deserts were equally fine.

Wine is just served by the carafe (red, white or rosé), there did not seem to be a wine list. However it was perfectly adequate, and the food is very much the star here.

The service was very friendly, and the chef is also very friendly. Later on in the day we were sitting in a bar after having visited the fort, and he came up to us and said hello!

If you are visiting Prats de Mollo, you must not miss this restaurant.

Don't miss this eccentric spot where you immediately feel welcomed. The food was good value and generally quite tasty. Most of the other restaurants in the town have outdoor tables, but we chose La Portella (the name I believe is wrong in this review) based on TripAdvisor. We were so pleased we returned the next night!
Most of the other diners were French, perhaps locals or visiting the nearby spa, or British tourists, and everybody seemed very happy.
The chef/ owner is charming and also an artist and philisopher (you'll see what I mean). Our waitress, Bertille, couldn't have been more pleasant and was very tolerant of our bad French. By the end of the second evening, we felt like we were longtime customers and had our photos taken with the owner (Gerard I believe is his name) and the rest of the staff. The country salad was excellent, as was the duck and a salad with sheep cheese. Chocolate mousse also quite tasty. Run, do not walk.

We arrived in Prats de Mollo on a really cold, windy day in early February. We knew nothing about the town, hadn't made any plans and weren't even sure anything was open - it was like a tomb. Finally we saw a citizen whom we asked where we could have lunch. She pointed us to Ma Portella. It is very simple, almost like a diner, and we probably wouldn't have gone in had we not thought it was probably the only option. We were so happy we did!

Gerard is a gem - an excellent chef, an artist and a philosopher. We ate extremely well for a very reasonable price and enjoyed reading his comments on life, which were posted on the walls throughout the restaurant. Even though the restaurant looks like a diner, you don't care because it's such a pleasure to be there in the warm, welcoming atmosphere.

I agree with everything said below. I'll only add my vote to the chap who wrote in French - buy the kit of edible "inks" and try decorating your own plates! I did.

This restaurant is a diamond. We walked in last Saturday without a reservation, were seated immediatedly and made to feel like old friends. The chef patron is a genius with food. The plates are all individually painted by him with food, and all the food is cooked and prepared in front of you in an open plan kitchen. Not only is his food excepetional, he is a wonderful host who it is impossible not to warm to. It was one of the best restaurant experiences I have ever had and if anyone visits Prats de Mollo without eating there they are missing a trick.

The owner/chef is a real artist who cares about the taste and presentation of his food. Don't be fooled by the simple interior - the food is extraordinarily well presented and the fish soup was probably amongst the best I have ever had.

Prats De Mollo is well up the Tech valley (40 min from Ceret) but this is a lovely restaurant and well worth this pretty village.
