Owner description: Founded in 910, Cluny Abbey radiated across Europe throughout the Middle Ages, with its large abbey church of exceptional proportions : "The Maior Eclesia".The highest vaults of the Romanesque world still bear witness today to this gigantism. The remains of the vast restored abbey church and the sites of the 18th century buildings were renovated for the occasion of the 1100th anniversary of the abbey's foundation; they encourage rediscovery of this unique place. A 3D film and virtual reproductions complete the tour and illustrate the majesty of what was Christianity's largest church. Move the screens to discover the abbey just as you would have found it in the 15th century!

Basically a ruin with a lot of history, but not a lot to look at or inspire. The town of Cluny is very important in historical terms.

We were blessed with lovely autumn sunshine for our visit, which awkwardly fell on the morning of the weekly market - which led to huge trouble finding parking. But it meant the town was very lively. You will probably find that you have quite a walk from the car park to the entrance to the Abbey and may even be a bit puzzled as to where the entrance actually is- but persevere. What you see for your entrance money is only a tiny fragment of what was an immense structure. Great efforts are made to demonstrate how these fragments fit in to the whole and they are impressive enough; you will also enjoy the facade of the later buildings and the park which lies beyond. But to get a real sense of what Cluny used to be you must come out and climb up to the site of the narthex, above the present entrance . That will show you just how immense it used to be and how much has been lost. We didn't have time for the museum but we loved the facade of the mairie and the lovely park which surrounds it; and there are many beauties in the old streets of the little town..

The Abbey at Cluny is an extraordinary place! Pay the small fee and rent the tablets to enhance you understanding of the Abbey and town. Great gift shop at the Museum and Abbey.

We enjoyed our visit but you need a good imagination to see what this was previously. The small museum and audio visuals certainly help but there isn't much of the original structure still standing. We enjoyed the visit and the local town but I don't think it's for everyone.

The Abbey, the Abbey Museum, and the charming town of Cluny are well-worth a visit. In addition to the historical site, the town has many interesting boutiques and cafes, so it is easy to spend a whole day here.
