We stumbled over the Chateau de Berze by pure and total luck, and a little folder from the tourist office. It is located in the extremely tiny village of Berze-le-Chatel, which literally consists of a Marie, a church and the chateau. That is it.

Guided tours are given every hour, or as needed. We were the only people on our tour, which was given by a lovely local girl who was happy to practice her English and did very well.

The castle itself is not very large, but very old, and well maintained. The main attraction is that it is just plunked there in the middle of the southern Burgundy hills. It was strategically located to protect a road, and well, that made sense. Long ago.

I refer to my pictures for the beauty of this charming little chateau.

The views of Berzé from the road are breathtaking, and the views from Berzé over the surrounding countryside are also gorgeous, which is why I give this four stars. I found the tour (which I actually went on in July 2011 but TA doesn't let me select that option) to be of limited interest and on its own would only merit 1 or 2 stars. Our guide was rather boring and seemed to be giving the tour against her will and was in a rush to finish. You don't see much of the castle itself, just the grounds, and there are other castles nearby that are much more enjoyable on the inside. Take the drive by to get some good photos, and enjoy the views, but your time and money would be better spent at Cormatin for example or even Brancion.

Most of the tour is of the exterior of the castle and the gardens - but you will not be disappointed. A tour with well-informed guide and spectacular views. You can buy some of their wine at the entrance. A most interesting history will be discovered.

Driving up the N79 from Macon this magnificent fortress can be seen from the road. It has a commanding view of the valley from where Count Hugh de Berze and his son, also Count Hugh, set off for the 1204 Crusade.
Built into the bedrock, with its own quirky prison and with a host of medieval features it is a must to visit in the area.
