We stayed at the Vasilias Nikoklis Inn about 4 years ago, so it may have changed since then.
We booked it “blind” from a newspaper article recommendation. It was run by a delightful Greek Cypriot, “Tassos” (sorry I can’t remember his full name & hope it’s spelt right) and his wife and members of his family.
I shall never forget arriving there after a dreadfully long day’s travel. We got a bit lost finding the inn in the dark, but eventually arrived to this fantastic smell of cooking – unforgettable. Rather than being fed up that we had arrived later than indicated, Tassos welcomed us like long-lost friends and insisted that we first have a good meal before worrying about signing-in and all that stuff. Mrs Tassos did most of the cooking, which was always excellent. Dinner time was a real treat, with everyone chatting to each other about their day’s activities. We’re not particularly gregarious, but you just had to join in and it was such fun. If the weather was a bit cold, Tassos would light the open fire.
They have built this place from a ruin. I seem to remember him saying that it was his grandfather’s place. The inn lies in open country and we enjoyed lovely walks through orange groves, once to an abandonned Turkish-Cypriot village, inhabited now mainly by goats. It’s a great spot for bird watchers and fishermen. We were fascinated by the call of the Black Francolin, which nested around the inn and for fishermen, there’s a vast reservoir nearby. There’s also pretty good road connection to the tourist places, BUT you do need a hire car and preferably quite a small one (the roads can be very narrow).
On the more practical side, this is not the place for those looking for luxury. While the food is great, particularly after an energetic day, it’s not Michelin Guide Book. Breakfast was a bit spartan – no hot croissants and cakes (there probably isn’t a bakery for miles) or buffet selection, but Tassos and his wife were very generous. Ask for more and you got it.
When we stayed there, the majority of guests were English, so if you want to join in a bit of english would help!
Our room was lovely and quiet, right at the end of the balcony, looking out across the valley to the call of the Black Francolin, BUT it was the last room on the hot water supply, so if anyone else further upstream turned a tap on while we were under the shower, we knew all about it. Also, the supply of hot water wasn’t endless as they rely a lot on their solar heating. So after dark the hot water ran cold quite fast. Finally, the toilets are a bit primitive – you are asked not to flush toilet paper and a separate bin is provided for this. This is not uncommon, but maybe wouldn’t be appreciated by those looking for sumptuous luxury.
When the time came to pay, we had worked out roughly how much it would be so that we could get the right money. I asked for the bill, and Tassos worked it out – it was completely wrong and I said so. Tassos looked really upset until I said that he must have UNDERCHARGED by about 20%. It’s a fabulous spot and Tassos and his family did everything possible to make us welcome and comfortable.
