“Poor service!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 5, 2013

We stayed there for 2 nights. While the room interior is ok for this low-budget hotel, we did not have hot water for the shower and the air condition was not able to keep the room warm (minus 2 degrees outside!). Dinner at the restaurant was a good value for money, but breakfast is a joke. If you pay extra you get coffee, otherwise it is hot water with some coffee taste. The hotel was basically empty, when we stayed there, however they charged us for checking out at 12.30 instead of 12.00!!! We would not recommend to stay there, even it is cheap.

The luxury double room is big and clean, but a bit dark. The staff is normal, not super friendly, maybe beacuse they can't speak english well. The breakfast was average Bulgarian. The best part were the swimming pool and the price/quality.

Hotel is build upon an ancient monastery (a chapel is still there) and the rooms are what the priest's homes used to be. it has a quite nice pool (1,60m deep) multiple terraces, a nice Restaurant and the scenery is gorgeous. you can see the wild mountains and hills in the distance. when you come from veliko-tarnovo there is a crossroad and just after it, on the right, it's un unpaved 25m portion of a path that takes you upon the Rachev Residence parking lot.
The staff is very friendly (one of the girls in the reception knew Romanian),the rooms have wooden floor, they are clean and nice furnished, the bathrooms are quite small but very clean. The tv is a sort of digital sattelite system that requires some skills to operate (there are several "tabs" on the remote - TV, Movies, Radio and so on - there is also a kind of pay-per-view system that allows you to rent movies direct from TV menu- well-categorized - by calling the reception and getting a PIN available for 4 hours). Breakfast was average, but ok.
we stayed just one night and we loved it.
we recommend for short trips, as you can't do much in the neighborhood.

Room Tip: dont forget you have free WIFI!

We stayed here for 2 nights during a tour of Bulgaria in August 2012. We chose the location because it's in a beautiful area but still close to the lovely historic town of Veliko Tarnovo. We had 2 standard rooms in the main body of the hotel.

It was very quiet and peaceful during our stay, and that may in part be due to the fact that there were not too many guests staying there at the time. Or perhaps they were just very quiet.

You could stay here and never leave the hotel; there is a good, although not huge, swimming pool (although see below), fitness centre, restaurant and bar. Wireless Internet is available throughout the hotel. One rather nice feature is that the hotel encourages birds (house martins, in fact) to nest within the grounds of the hotel by providing nest boxes under the eaves, and the birds themselves are always flying around the hotel and singing. They were not a problem at night.

However the birds also like to swoop down to the swimming pool in order to drink from it, and, I suspect, one or two of them use it as a toilet as well, to judge by what I could see in the water. The water itself was not clear either. I didn't get ill from the swimming pool but I do suspect that I picked up an infection in one ear from it.

The rooms are not very big, and they are simply furnished and have wooden floors. Although everything was very clean, I was quite surprised to find what looked like spots of blood in several places on what was supposed to be a clean sheet on one of the beds. There are air-conditioning units on the wall of every room, but these seemed to do very little except act as a fan. I couldn't really detect any cold air coming out of them, in either of our two rooms. Also there is a sensor which switches off the AC when the window is open. Now to be fair I didn't point this out to the hotel staff, because we were able to leave open a window which was also thoughtfully provided with a mesh screen to stop insects getting in. The bathroom again is quite small, and there is no separate cubicle for the shower. This means that the whole bathroom floor gets completely wet. Moreover, this claims to be a 4-star hotel, but they managed to provide nothing but a small bar of soap and a cheap sachet of shampoo in the bathroom. I find this quite mean, especially given that the price of this place is somewhat higher than average for Bulgaria.

Breakfast runs until 10am, which is good if you want a lazy morning, and there is plenty to choose from. However we were told - when we asked - about coffee at breakfast, that we had to use the Nescafe machine at the breakfast buffet. Once again, to be forced to drink instant coffee in a four-star establishment, even when it comes out of a machine and it has a bit of froth on top, is just really mean and some way below what I would expect. Moreover, certain other guests were getting Lavazza coffee from the bar in the same room as the breakfast buffet. I don't understand why we were told one thing, but clearly something else applies to other guests. Also the "orange juice" was nothing of the sort. It may have once been orange juice, but watered down and with added sugar. Unfortunately this seems to be quite common in Bulgaria; but surely in a place like this, at this price, they could provide real orange juice, even if it comes out of one of the bottles I saw in the refrigerator?

The hotel is right on the outskirts or Arbanasi, and it doesn't enjoy some of the views over the hills and valley that other parts of the village have.

Despite the weaknesses, we did actually quite enjoy our time here and we would probably go back, as long as we don't pay the full asking price listed by the hotel, which is over 100Lv. per night.

Room Tip: Ask for a room which does NOT face the swimming pool, since these rooms don't seem to get much o...

4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 25, 2011

though there were some young families staying here on my 2 day visit this was still a lovely peaceful and quiet location, the rooms are very clean and spacious with everything that the business or tourist traveller could need, Wifi is available and though i only used it for a short period it seemed to work well. During my two night stay I ate at the hotel restaurant, the food was well prepared and delicious, staff are friendly and helpful, quite a number of staff spoke english which was extremely helpful also, a good wine list complemented the food. I also stayed at one other location in this same village, and I would say the Rachev Residence is by far one of the best in the area

Room Tip: ask staff for advice, they are extremely helpful, for example I was thinking of returning here a few...
