“Terrible maintanence”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 25, 2012 via mobile

The hotel is a beautiful old building that makes you proud you sleep there. It has a great view that is impossible to compare. Then it comes the service, the dirty rooms, the terrible breakfast, terrible dinners, old towels with holes, bad carpet old wallpapers whatever you may think of is old and never changed since 1991. The smell is the same as we know it from the old communist military kitchens.
About the stars i may say that it can be 5 stars in the future, but now if it depends on me i would close this hotel and not give even a star.
In conclusion don't go there until you see a comment that they have changed everything.

My wife and I stayed in this hotel in Bulgaria less than a month ago and had a good experience. It was an older hotel that had been used some by an important functionary in the Communist government during the Communist era. We had an extremely large room with a big balcony which overlooked the countryside. The room was huge and had plenty of amenities. The bathroom had been upgraded and was very up to date. The bed was comfortable. About the only negative about the room was the carpet--it was a little dirty and needed to be replaced. The breakfast provided was very nice. All in all, the hotel provided us with a comfortable and enjoyable experience.

I have stayer in the Arbanassi Palace hotel, 2 km away from Veliko Turnovo, for one night in August 2010. I decided for the spot in order to offer an original stay to my partner, who is not Bulgarian.

One thing I can say about the hotel is that it's indeed a one-of-a-kind hotel. Built in 1975 as a secondary State residence to the Bulgarian communist party head, Todor Zhivkov, it has been one of the more refined State residences in the country. It has been a govt. propriety until the beginning of the 1990's.

The place is actually unique in a lot of aspects: architecture (1970's design private villa, entirely made of white marble and stones), location (on the upper hills in front of Arbanassi village, offering an outstanding landscape view of the Bulgarian ancient capital of Veliko Turnovo and of it's medieval fortress, Tsarevets), it is surrounded by private parks, and offers even a heliport.

It offered us a very calm, comfortable, clean and cozy stay. Our deluxe double room was very bright and spacious, with a city view (actually, I've specifically requested it), with high-leveled littery.

Now, my cons would resume in the following aspects: The pool: it is actually more a big jacuzzi that a small pool, located in the underground corridor, and you have to pay 10 EUR more for it. It is not for the money, but, taking into account the price of 85 EUR for the double room (I am Bulgarian national, and I can tell you it is not very cheap), and the poll's size, it is an unjustified cost.

My other and BIGGEST CON is on maintenance: I got very disappointed: although rooms and common parts (restaurants, main halls and corridors, pool) are ultra clean and garden was often looked after, it seems that the owner(s) do not take care of the general maintenance of the villa - in example, no care is provided for the marble walls and terrace (marble is getting gloomy, with some mushroom appearances), some corridors have burned light bulbs (not very convenient for a five-star hotel), some maintenance panels are missing in the corridors' walls, etc. Actually, I actually got shocked because the villa itself is a small a part of modern Bulgaria's History, and without proper care, the place falls little by little apart, loosing it's ancient shine.

But overall, I am completely satisfied of my stay. The price, a bit expensive, was justified by what I was looking for: an original stay while visiting this WONDERFULL city, luxury and comfort in a quiet stay with an unique view. I can tell you, falling asleep with Veliko Turnovo's night lights in front of your bed and with the only sound of crickets is PRICELESS...
