Gafsa is usually avoided as an overnight stop for anyone in Tunisia unless they truly have a reason to be in Gafsa. Gafsa...is not a destination for destination sake!
We had to be there for a night for business reasons and booked the "5 star" Gafsa Palace. First, not star in Tunisia is deserving of star based on international standards, so it is always wise to deduct one star to even start being realistic. In addition, Gafsa is a town that the world has neglected, Tunisia has neglected. Certainly, since the Revolution of January 2011 when the phosphate companies and other business that would need to visit the region have in many cases, departed or curtailed their activities due to the many labor strikes that have plagued the region.
None-the-less, we needed to be there and found the hotel perfectly acceptable. There seemed to be few clients, but the rooms were clean, the wi-fi worked, beer and wine were available and lunch in the restaurant was nice. So, if you must go to Gafsa, feel confident you can have a good night's sleep. However, when you note the article from 2006 on the wall in the lobby noting the awarding of "5 stars", temper your expectations considerably and know that it will hardly be that, but the management deserves credit for doing their best!
