We stayed at Dongwe for the last week of our honeymoon and what a perfect way it was to end our honeymoon!
On arrival we were greeted with a cold fresh juice and a warm welcome from the most friendly and happy hotel manager on earth Samson! what a great guy. There was a little mix up with our rooms as we had requested to be in the building away from the restaurant, no further questions were asked Samson got us moved straight away and upgraded us to the honeymoon suite the best room I would say (109)! The room was very clean, spacious and with a fabulous view.

The breakfast was good, eggs made to order as desired, scrambled, fried or omelette. Fresh, pancakes, sausages, beans, a variety of fresh pastries and fresh fruit. Dinner was a buffet and I must say probably the best buffet I have ever had, everything was so flavoursome, we had a variety of dishes, delicious soups, and some nights we had some traditional dishes on the menu as well (Zanzibarian rice and beans stew we had was to die for) and every night there was something on the grill as well, fish chicken or beef, the only bad part of this is the food is so good you will end up leaving this place a little fatter!

The staff were the extremely friendly, and made sure they did everything to cater your specific needs. Everything was given with a smile. They made us feel so at home that we extended our stay for 2 more nights, we just couldn't bear to leave.
During our stay, we needed some of out cloths to be ironed, I headed to reception and asked to borrow an iron and they offered to iron my cloths. One of the boys was sent to our room picked up my dresses and within half an hour it was bought back to me ironed to perfection! You don't get service like this everywhere.

It was my husband birthday while on one of the nights and Samson arranged a private dinner for us on the beach, a surprise birthday cake was also brought out by all of the staff singing happy birthday to him.

I have stayed in various hotels in the US and around Europe and would say hands down that this place puts some of the 5 start hotels in the west to shame, the service is just exceptional, the food is great, and the rooms are very good. I would question the motives of anyone who has complained about this place.

I will definitely be coming back to Dongwe, what a pleasant stay it was.

Special thank you to Samson, Juma and the rest of the staff who bent over backwards to ensure you was happy at all times.

We were there with a World Insight tourist group of 11 persons. The hotel is about 60km away from Stone Town and has a warm familiar atmosphere. All rooms have ocean view, safe, AC and fans. Our room was in a good state, only the fridge in our room was switched on but didn't cool. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Breakfast buffet is okay (Being European I missed cheese). To point out is that coffee, tea, cookies and cake was served every day at 4:30pm without extra charge. Dinner buffet is very delicious but dangerous: I had 2kg more when I left the hotel!
The prices for non-alcohol drinks are adequate, the price for beer (4$/ 0,5l bottle) or wine is too high. The beach was very nice, clean and only a few tourists were there. The "beach boys" were not too annoying. The ocean was warm and without any dangerous streams. We swam to the riff and saw many beautiful fishes.
I’m sure: Every burn out or distress can be cured here!

fantastic view lokking over the sea. I was at Dongwe ocean and found the hotel has a perfect spot right on the Beach. The food and management is not outstanding - but hey this is africa and not a 5 star place. But the location is outstanding

We stayed 11 days after our safari trip and were delighted for our choice. Hotel is situated right by the seafront, with all rooms facing the ocean and just a few meters from the sand. Swimming pool and open restaurant are also right by the beach with great views. Service is exceptional and they make you feel at home at all times. They take those extra actions necessary to make your stay memorable and adapt to your needs. We stayed in the honeymoon suit (room 109). Room was nice, not luxurius but quite spacious and for Zanzibar standards it had all we needed to disconnect from usual life and relax. There's no TV but who needs it. We spent all day outdoors in the beach and at night we went to bed early. Our room was the best possible. Ask for a room in the building 1 (rooms starting with 1). This building is right in front of the beach. Rooms starting with 2 are in the other building and they have the swimming pool between them and the beach. Dinner was very nice, large variety, and breakfast delicous. I love those homemade croissants! A lunch will cost you USD 10-15. If you want to do excursions you can get them from the boys offering them in the beach for almost half price than the hotel. We took one to Prison Island and Spices Tour. Great experiences. Given the large difference between tides on this side of the island, make sure you bring water shoes to explore the sea life when tide is low. You will need them! Thank you to all the staff, to manager Samson, and people at reception!

Room Tip: All rooms are very nice but if possible ask for a room in the building 1 (rooms starting with 1). This building is right in front of the beach. Rooms starting with 2 are in the other building and they have the swimming pool between them and the beach. We recommend honeymoon suite (room 109). Other very good spacious rooms are those located in the center of each floor (room 102 ground floor, 105 first floor, and 108 second floor). Although personally I'd avoid the ground floor rooms because your big balcone door is very accesible to anyone. If you don't want to go up the stairs every day then just take it.
