If you want to try stillwater fish, especially carp (hungarian kind of) you have to visit this place and order the fish soup.

This restaurant is near to Szeged, by car you can easily reach it. The lake is beautiful and if you are lucky you can sit outside. The inside is very nice too. We had the chance to taste few meals today. All the fish meals were great and fresh. The fishsoup was a bit too salty, but it was ok to eat it with bread. The pancakes are very nice served, but a bit too sweet for us. Catfish was perfect. Recommended.

The real good/great fish soup (halaszle) is by now, unfortunatly, an almost extinct specie in Hungary. (Except perhaps some fish-soup festivals and private gardens.) The reason is the lack of quality red paprika (an other quasi-extinct specie in Hungary, thanks to the efforts of quality manipulators, mixing it with cheap tropical varieties). All this should be kept in mind when trying a new place for fish soup.

As for this Akasztó "csarda", the carp soup I tried was reasonably good, but for a number of reasons far from being great. The fish-meat was salty rather than almost sweet (as it should be). The colour of the juice was brownish-mustard, a sure sign that not the right, harsh red colour paprika was used. The juice was thin, lacking the gelatin which comes from the head and other bony parts of the fish. Probably they were not cooked for long enough into the juice. And, finally, it was obviously made on a cooker rather than on open fire. It is there that in my experience the real great fish soup can only be made. All in all, however, it was certainly quite above the average fish soup I had in similar establishments in Hungary.

The rest of what we tried was good, including a choice of good wines which is not standard in many rural restaurants yet. Service was attentive and intelligent, though not the fastest and the environment (seated at the not many tables outside, by the water-side) also well looked after and pleasant.

In brief, the place is definitely worth a visit and the fish soup a try. But keep your expectations a little down, closer to realities.

Middle of Hungary, far from everything, You can get into a little paradise. Wonderful lakes, traditional foods and in my opinion the fish soup is the best here!
