Went here for lunch and was very much disappointed. Ordered a sandwich and to be honest, a 10 year old could have made more effort. It really was just a couple slices of bread with a slice of cheese in the middle. Oh, but I nearly forgot - there was a half a lettuce leaf and 2 quarters of a tomato on the plate with a few crisps. Didn't that level apresentation die out years ago?

For £7.95 I felt incredibly let down and cheated. Just a little bit of effort could have gone a long way. We asked if there was anywhere else for a coffee as the sports bar area was totally lacking in atmosphere and were directed to the main house. Off we went and had coffee but then were informed there were no tills open in the main house so we would have to go back down to the bar in the pavillion to pay. What a ridiculous set up.

I used to go to Highbullen hotel on a regular basis with past owners but sadly will be not rushing to return again.

Thank you for your review.

I am sorry that we have clearly failed to reach your level of expectation on this occasion.

I hope that in time we can prove though our TripAdvisor reviews that we are worth giving another shot.

Best wishes,

James

Me and my 21 year old son shared a very comfortable twin room on a 2 nights golfing break. We played 3 rounds on a challenging but enjoyable course.Meals in both the resturant and bar were very good, particularly breakfast.Evenings were spent playing pool or snooker in the bar/ games area. There was not enough space in the room for our clubs but as carparking was immediatley next to the room it easy to store our clubs overnight. All in all a very good small break for a father and son that was excellant value for money. We will come again and have reccommended the High Bullen to friends.

On arrival you immediately know this hotel is not part of a chain. The main building is a converted 17th Century mansion house and the reception is based on what looks like a former library. Jane the receptionist was also very welcoming with her enthusiastic and upbeat style – we were very impressed. We were allocated a room in the newly built Courtyard building some 200 metres from the main building. Our room was large and well appointed and even came with an umbrella. Dinner in the main dining room was excellent – the food was very good and the view over the moors was stunning.

There were only a couple negatives; the price of drinks (£4.80 for a pint of warm bottled beer and £21 for half of bottle of fairly ordinary Fleurie), and the walk to the restaurant in the rain with that umbrella. Other than that we thought this a well-managed hotel with professional and highly motivated staff.

Room Tip: Premium rooms in the mansion house may be worth the extra if it rains!

Really nice hotel however we were not put in the main building but converted outhouses. Unfortunately we were disturbed quite a lot of the time because of the occupants upstairs where the floors had not been sound proofed well. They are not attached to the main building so you do have to walk a short way to dinner and breakfast.

Room Tip: Try and have a room upstairs if you are allocated the outhouses.

Thank you for your review.

I am pleased that you appear to have an overall enjoyable break with us.

I hope we can welcome you back in the near future, at which point I would recommend paying the small upgrade charge to a room in the Manor House - they are worth it.

Best wishes,

James

We stayed at Highbullen for two nights over the April bank holiday weekend. The décor is lovely, our room was very comfortable, and the staff were all extremely friendly and obliging. We had a lovely meal in the Devon View restaurant on our first night, and a delicious fish pie in the Cellars restaurant the following night. Breakfast was perhaps a bit dull by comparison, but perfectly adequate. The leisure centre facilities are pretty good, although it’s easy to get your towel mixed up with those of all the other guests! We would recommend the traditional cream tea – enjoyed over a game of chess in the Morning Room. The only disappointment was the weather (which prevented us from playing croquet) but we won’t hold Highbullen responsible for that! All in all we had a lovely time and are keen to return in the future.
