Avoid this place at all costs!!!! After refusing to stay in the first room offered we found the second room much the same. The whole place is in desperate need of a major cash injection ,not having been updating since being built 30 odd years ago. Devoid of sufficient heating, beds as old and tired as the room, bad plumbing, bad food etc. It's too exensive in comparison to other local options. Would sooner camp on the roadside than have a free room here...............

My wife and I stayed at the Godley Hotel in Lake Tekapo for 1 night recently. We had low expectations (based on the reviews we had read) but had chosen this hotel as is was approx 1/2 way along our journey, had availability of a double room and an attractive price.

Our room was adjacent to the swimming pool. It was an older room with a bath only (no shower), however this aligned with our booking. Check in was friendly and quick, and we made our way to the room. The overwhelming impression of this hotel was that it was old and worn out, but nonetheless our room had a fridge, a television, a soft but comfortable double bed and a single bed. A heater was installed, and we turned it on immediately to warm up the room.

The hotel is right on the shore of Lake Tekapo and does look in desparate need of some updating, however it was convenient and comfortable for us. As long as you don't have grand expectations, it was a perfectly functional basic room for us. Check out was also efficient. As shown in the photos, the decor of our room was very 1970s. I wouldn't necessarily recommend it as a great place to stay, but is a "Must See" if you enjoy this type of decor and unrenovated style - such as the kitsch wallpaper in our room.

A recommendation for dining - we walked along the main street and ate at the Jade Palace Chinese Restaurant, really enjoyed the meal which included some generally authentic (non westernised) dishes on the menu. There were 'western Chinese' dishes as well, but we were impressed to find such a good Chinese restaurant in such an out of the way place.

Not sure what was the worst - the fluorescent light which would not turn off properly then sprang in to life at 2:30 am; the insomniac upstairs who walked over the creaking floorboards all night then the final straw - demanding payment for a breakfast we had not ordered or eaten.

Our room was delapidated, the shower floor was falling apart, the shower was far too low and had hardly any pressure. The walls were dirty and the carpets were worn and stained. The bed and pillows were very uncomfortable. This place needs to be demolished. DO NOT stay at this dump!

Room was delapidated, the shower produced almost no water at all. The walls were covered in scuff marks the carpets worn and stained. We paid extra for a Lake View Room, which is realy a view over a gravel area and the colex bin with the lake in the distance. The view is via a large sliding glass door. However this opens out onto a public balcony which is also the smoking area judging by the overflowing ashtray outside our door. The exterior cladding is coming off the building. The place needs to be demolished .We planned to stay 2 nights, and only stayed one. stay away.!!!

The hotel is very central to Tekapo village, right on the highway. It has an icecold unheated swimming pool, an unpleasant jacuzzi and a gym they keep locked up. Breakfast is included and for the money not too bad as long you don't mind cholesterol poisoning. There was no fresh fruit only tinned. The room which was not the basic one (their definition) was on the basic side with a small fridge but not much more. The shower head fell off when I was using it and I was scalded. The hotel has seen much better days - shabby. But there was 1 saving grace - right next door there is a fantastic Japanese restaurant, it doesn't look like much but wow was it good and authentic

I booked this motel at Christchurch iSite tourist information, assuming it should be ok. It was awful - a broken tv, furnishings long past their replacement date and a fridge that was noisy and not fit for purpose.

When I queried the tv issue with reception, they informed me that all the other rooms had no tv reception as well?!!!

Also, had a quick look at the 'pool'. Needless to say it was filthy, no guests seemed to want to use it....wonder why!!
