Owner description: The Church of the Good Shepherd is situated on the shores of Lake Tekapo amongst the natural beauty of the lake and the mountains. The Church of the Good Shepherd was built to the glory of God as a memorial to the pioneers of the Mackenzie Country. "Somehow the setting and the church combine to speak of God to those who enter and pause in the midst of their busy lives." - Peter Hurricks NO PHOTOS INSIDE Please do not use cameras, cellphones or tablets inside the church so that others may enjoy as is a place of prayer and reflection. PLEASE REMOVE YOUR WASTE There are no toilet or rubbish collection facilities in the area around the church so we kindly ask that visitors remove their waste and respect the natural environment around the church.

You don't have to be of a religious or spiritual disposition to appreciate this humble building, located on the shores of the almost impossibly turquoise Lake Tekapo. Unlike the great and the ornate cathedrals of places like Barcelona, Notre Dame and Florence, the Church of the Good Shepherd's beauty is not so much in the construction - though its simple and minimal interior is stunning in its own right - but in the surrounding landscape of lakes, mountains, plains and Alps.

I would heartily encourage anyone to pay a visit if at all possible: although it won't take a great deal of time to see and do, you could happily spend longer sitting on the shores of the lake outside and ponder any number of things - you are unlikely to find another place that offers such an opportunity to clear your head, and think undisturbed.

we only stopped long enough to take a couple of quick photos which was difficult due to the large number of tourists. Amazing views from this church would make it the perfect location for a wedding with stunning photos. wish i had more time and my tripod.

Cute church, a must see, however theres really not much else to do it, unless you need to water your pony.

I think they need to add another attraction to it like cleansing souls in the lake.

Try to go in the early morning/late afternoon when there are less tourist buses around. The church is tiny and probably wouldnt fit more that 30 people in. The views from inside are beautiful. Definitely worth a look if youre in the area.

Go there at 8pm! any later and you'll miss the milky way passing above the church. Dress REALLY warm though, winter nights out there are FREEZING! The lake during day time is equally picturesque. A Must visit place in NZ
