We did the night tour. We had tried to do this months ago but the weather wasn't playing ball.
The staff were very good with informing us what would happen if the weather wasn't suitable for the tour. We had the opportunity to swap to a different day if we wanted as the weather had been cloudy although there were clear patches and the weather can change very quickly.
We were picked up at our accommodation and taken to the office to be fitted out with padded jackets to keep us toasty warm as it can get very cold up on Mt John. The commentary on the way there was great again telling us what to expect etc.
Once at Mt John we had a group photo taken. As it was clouding over we were taken to the MOA telescope and they explained how it worked etc - accompanied by delicious hot chocolate.
Then we were so lucky that the clouds cleared and we were able to use 2 telecopes to view things such as Saturn, the tarantula nebula, jewelbox and other amazing sights. The staff were so great and sharing their knowledge.
Thoroughly recommend this tour - we would do again. At $125 we thought it was worthwhile - I guess we were lucky to have a semi clear night so got a bit of both worlds.
