“Family villa was fine for us”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 10, 2010

We stayed in a family villa for 1 night in April 2010. The place is situated right near the lake and the views were beautiful. Check-in was swift and we drove up the hill to our villa - parking was directly in front. There were stairs which were tricky to negotiate with all our suitcases but the villa itself was fine. It was quite old but everything was intact and the place was spacious. The beds were very comfortable and our 7 year old enjoyed his bunk! There was a washing machine in the bathroom/laundry which was handy. As you pay when you check-in, the checkout was simple - just drop the key in the box outside reception. Whilst the place wasn't modern it was fine for what we wanted.

We stayed at the Lake Tekapo holiday park for our last night of an otherwise excellent 10 days in the South Island camping with our children.

The facility, despite its great location, was very disappointing. The office is a very long way from the facilities, which was an inconvience for us when we found out we needed change for the showers.

The kitchen closest to our cabin was substandard. There was one stove only, very little signage, and it was poorly laid out.

The cabin itself was grotty - wire wove beds that we I hadn't encountered since I was a kid at my Grandma's place, and grotty bed covers. A very uncomfortable night's sleep esp for my husband who is tall.

The bathrooms were disappointing, particularly having to pay for a hot shower given the prices of the facility overall.

In fairness, the service we received from the office staff was good. However, having enjoyed far better facilities at lower prices in other parts of the South, we felt that this facility lets down NZ tourism - and what's worse is that a lot of tourists will be staying there given it is in popular Tekapo.

We did the classic thing of booking this in a hurry, then looking at the Trip Advisor reviews, so were somewhat dreading the experience and expecting a grotty shack.

Fortunately, we were very pleasantly surprised. We arrived earlier than planned - and before our check-in was due - but the receptionist was very friendly and our room was ready.

We were treated to the most fantastic view of Lake Tekapo and a clean, simply furnished, but quite spacious two bedroom apartment. As one reviewer has commented, it is a bit absurb to have a gravel car parking space obscuring your view of the lake, but we just unloaded and moved our car to the side of the building so we could have an uninterrupted view.

We ambled down to the hot springs at the bottom of the road, which again provided incredible views of the lake and and were very relaxing.

We had been planning to eat out, but the views were so good we decided to eat in and bought some provisions at the very reasonably-priced local supermarket (walking distance). The kitchen facilities in our apartment were good and very clean.

Can't quite understand the unfavourable reviews unless they've refurbished the rooms since some of them were written - the carpets in our place seemed new and everything was a good standard for this type of motel. Admittedly, you pay a wee bit more than for comparable accommodation in other parts of the S Island, but then again the whole of the Lake Tekapo area is expensive and this was the best deal we could find. We stayed in motel room 2 so it might be an idea to ask specifically for that (it's two bedroom).

All in all, a great experience. We stayed for one night but wished we'd stayed for two or three. The views were unrivalled by anywhere else we've stayed in New Zealand.

We only camped here for one night, and the pay as you go showers were fine, but we didn't use the kitchens. It was so so. The location is good, right by the lake.

In the two weeks of holidaying in the South Island, this would have to be the worst accommodation I have every come across. We stayed in one of the self contained Motel Units at the Camp Ground. Very dirty and unkept. When we arrived I noticed that the roasting dish had 1/2 inch of fat in the bottom of it, so went to wash it only to find the dishwashing brush was all black with caked on grease. We paid $190.00 per night for 2 adults 3 children which would not usually worry me, but when a unit is so dirty there is no exception. I also work in the hospitality trade and was appalled. Lake Tekapo itself is fabulous, but very let down with something like this.

Easy walking distance to town, this place has a great location, but attention to detail is not its strong point.
We stayed in one of the motel units, in a commanding location looking out to Lake Tekapo, but it's a pity the default car parking position is in front of the units blocking the view. Fortunately there is enough space to park cars away from the view, but the view is still compromised by the dirt carpark. One wonders why they didn't build the units forward and put the car parking spaces at the back - there's plenty of space to have done so.
The unit itself is small (very small in the case of the shower) but clean. However, room servicing is a bit hit and miss, forgetting to replenish soap, no waste bin in the bathroom, and one day all of the used linen was just left in a pile on the floor - forgot to take it away. The bed is adequate size but has a thick overmattress (presumably for easy cleaning) which was so soft it was impossible to lie flat - just sank into it. Not good for the back.
In summary, if you're driving between Queenstown and Christchurch and want a place to stop overnight, fine. If you're looking for a base for a few day's exploring the area - no.

Great place to stop if you're travelling from Christchurch down to Queenstown. Kitchen was small but view more than made up for this.
