“Lovely Lake”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 11, 2012

So much had been written about this Lake that we put it on our "must see" list. Yes, the lake was stunning in all it's autumn glory and the morning mist and evening sunsets a photographers dream.

Pity that the hoons driving their cars thru the camper park far exceeded the 'walking' speed limit. One of them seemed to be a staff member who constantly sped thru several times a day!

The showers are unisex, OK can get used to that but you still have to pay. The Kitchen facilities are old and tired looking but reasonably clean.
We had a very nice camper site overlooking the lake but on the weekend the peace was shattered by the jet skis and power boats with their barking dogs etc. This is a very popular locals water sports area so bear that in mind.

Attractions in this area are a historic old church, "Good Shepherd" and the Observatory up on Mt John which is well worth the steep drive up. Big campervans made it up the narrow (almost one way) winding road. Coffee shop and great views at the top.

The small "village" within walking distance has some eating places and a small convenience supermart as well as a couple of petrol stations.

Just up the road from the holiday park is a hot springs spa pool/s complex where you can relax for an admission cost.

The reception at this park was cordial but reserved, meaning it wasn't as warm and friendly like most others we had been to. That's probably because it is the only park here and seems to be more aimed at the locals and their power boats and weekend activities.

Now that we have seen the lake we probably won't come back. Cost, $40NZ per site per nite for 2 in a camper.

Great park with oustanding views of Lake Tekapo. Facilities were clean with the exception of seeing a ferret living in the kitchen. Easy walking distance back to town and to the Hot Springs next door. They do nickle and dime you charging for showers, laundry, etc. And most of the stoves in the kitchen didn't work. But it's the only game in town and the views are amazing.

Accommodation was exactly right for us. Beds clean and comfortable. Minimum equipment but perfectly adequate for our needs. View was spectacular, looking right down the Lake, with Mt. John on one side and mountains on the other. We sat and watch the sun come up every morning and sunset at night. Location was excellent. Hot Pools and Ice skating rink a few metres along the road. Township with restaurants and shops about 10 minutes walk along a purpose built pathway, lit at night with lamps all the way along.
For us, it was the perfect situation. Handy to all the things we wanted to do without having to use car except when we wanted to go further afield to do a hike. We were, in fact, able to do the Mt. John circuit without using the car and felt quite comfortable walking to and from the township at night when we dined out.

Accommodation appalling and DISGUSTING! We stayed in what was referred to as a family villa (which you could call it at a stretch of the imagination). The unit smelt, was old, dated and drab. The carpets were frayed, the wall paper peeling off the walls and had dirty marks on it, cob webs around the ceilings, light fittings broken and thick with dust. The fridge did not work properly and kept freezing our food. To top it all off we discovered the unit had mice, which was what the terrible smell would have been. We laid a written complaint with the owners/managers of the facility, who clearly have no customer services skills, were not interested, did not respond to our email and then when we finally phoned them and spoke to them, tried to turn the blame around onto us!!! We paid $170 per night, way over priced. Unfortunately we had to pay prior to our stay and they will not reimburse us with anything. Had we been paying at the end they would not have got that amount per night. We do not recommend this accommodation at all and if this unit is anything to go by, we can understand why they are not a Top 10 Holiday Park!

Seems that this place is working to address some of the problems raised by many travelers: there are some newer facilities going in, and staff was friendly. Still, have to agree that the $2 charge for a hot shower in a cramped stall is a leftover from an earlier era. If you really want a nice bath, try going a little further up Lakeside Drive to the newish (opened 2007) spa ($20 per adult for the thermal baths, $28 for the steam/sauna). Wonderful after a long day on the road.

First, there are lots of kinds of accommodation at this holiday park. We're reviewing an Ensuite Cabin.

We took a 2 week road trip through New Zealand and this was our very first stop (drove here after landing in Christchurch). We booked an Ensuite Cabin and was just what we needed to deal with the jet lag. It's not a large cabin. We had a queen sized bed and a set of bunk beds, a mini fridge, sink/counter area, table and 2 chairs, TV, and a bathroom (with a tiny sink, see pictures). But for 2 of us it was fine. Four adults and luggage might be crowded, but with children in the bunk beds you'd probably be fine. The cabin was spotless and the bed was soft and cozy with crisp, white sheets (I had understood from the website that we'd need to rent bedding; that was not the case for the ensuite cabin.). There was a heating blanket in case we were cold (we weren't) and the purchased Wi-Fi worked. Our little cabin also had a front porch overlooking the lake with a stunning view.

This campsite is nicely set amongst the woods just up from the shore of Lake Tekapo, on quite a hilly piece of ground. The pitches with lake views are the best so ask for one (17-30). It's a popular site but has facilities well able to cope and lots of washing lines in the sunshine (discretely hidden). One of the wash blocks is unisex which can be disconcerting, but the upside is that showers which you have to pay for, can be shared as the time given is plenty long enough for two! The view of Lake Tekapo is lovely and whilst there isn't a shop as I recall, the 'town' is in easy walking distance. Plenty of places to eat there yet only one tiny and busy supermarket by the petrol station. The Church of the Good Shepherd is very close by, as is Mount John observatory in the other direction. It is easy to drive or walk there from the site but both routes are very steep. Driving up and walking down gives you the best of everything (if your driver will return alone). We visited in February, just after the NZ kids were back at school and were a bit surprised at how quiet everywhere was - nothing happening on the lake at all. So, very peaceful - but bear that in mind if you are looking for lake based activities in what was hardly out-of-season.

Room Tip: Choose pitches 17-30 with lake views
