“Disappointing visit to well publicised new cafe”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 21, 2014

A group of friends meets regularly for lunch in different cafes from Hastings to Bay View, and we have modest requirements, i.e. we usually choose tasty fresh offerings from the cabinet. We were disappointed to find this café had a very limited range of food on offer. It was barely 12noon so they had either run out after morning teas or were not quite ready for the lunch rush. The menu did not appeal as a light lunch option (expensive mains, restaurant prices), so we made do with very meagre offerings from the cabinet. Concerned to see platters of muffins, scones etc sitting uncovered on the counter. Décor is eclectic, nice outdoor arrangements. The staff were friendly and tried to help one customer by offering a pizza from the children's menu which turned out to be most unexciting. I was ready for crackers and cheese at home for afternoon tea. Viewing the advertised art gallery didn't seem to be an option, perhaps it is by invitation only to approved persons who order lavishly from the menu!
Not on our list for a return visit, alas.

“A chance stop”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 20, 2014

Heading in to Napier from Palmy we went to go past this place but as we were early we decided to stop for a coffee.

We were immediately greeted by the owners and made to not only feel welcome but as if we had been going there for years.

The menu was large with all meals having a reference to musical characters from the 60's - 70's.

We sat on the veranda out the front to stay in the shade but they did have a very large back garden for dining as well as indoors.

Ended up having a very nice coffee, entrees and a wine.

A great experience and looking forward to getting back to visit one day.

“A Great Find!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 9, 2014

Hubby and I had planned to dine at Cape Kidnappers, but were turned away as it was completely full. We headed back in the rain to come across this fantastic new cafe... open only three months (and judging from the overflowing carpark... it was doing well). Very happy and helpful staff smoothly guided us to our (outdoor/undercover) table and presented the menu. We shared a platter for two - just wanted a wee snack. The "plate" presented to us hand-made wood in the shape of a Z.... with small bowls of pumpkin humus (made on premises), two types of breaded fish and accompanying dips... and to save the best till last........a bowl of baked olives... to die for!!! I'd never experienced warm olives before and believe me, I nearly went to heaven. I managed to glean three of the ingredients from the super talented chef but that was all - so I have to work it out myself. TRY THIS PLACE... the coffee was good too. Next time we will arrive HUNGRY and devour dishes from the reasonably priced and well-planned menu. Thanks Bryan! (Actually, I dreamed of those olives that night and we went back for coffee and a fresh baked muffin the next morning!) This place is going places! Open 7 days - from 7am to 3pm (well they need a life as well.)

“What a gem!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 7, 2014

For a relatively new country cafe it certainly comes with the sophistication of a long established big city joint. We had a large group which was handled with great service.
It was hard to choose from the divine sounding menu options. We finally settled on the platter for 2 to start. What an array of interesting tastes. I followed with the starter size mushroom in filo vol au vent. OMG this was one of the tastiest dishes this expert has had in a while. My partner, a long term meatatarian, settled for the sirloin steak. Basic but well cooked and the butter topping was exceptionally good. ( Yes I try everything).

To top off this unique cafe with comfortable style yet sophisticated overtones, there is an art gallery with a fabulous local artist exhibiting inside. Well worth the look if its open.

Great parking here and only 15 minutes from either Havelock/Hastings or Napier. Well worth it.

Also has a large fully fenced playground for children making this an excellent option for parents to really enjoy a lunch/brunch out with friends.

“Lunchtime bliss”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 1, 2014

We popped into Zepplin on a public holiday early afternoon, having been on a bush walk, wanting to have a light lunch and sit in the sun. Well, shade actually as the sun was too hot in sunny Hawke's Bay :-). we ordered coffees and a Zep platter for two, which the menu says is a little bit of all sorts of things chosen by the chef. It was soo good. Initially looked a bit small but was actually just right. It had portions of dishes of excellent quality which were just a little different to the usual suspects on a platter. Highlights today being the smoked and fried fish, the hot olives, the hot marinated mushrooms with the most excellent award going to the pea, broadbean and mint dip. The coffees were very nice and came with a homemade biscotti which was also just right. The staff were lovely, attentive and friendly, the table on the grass had a large sunshade and the wine list looked great, although today I didn't partake. I definitely recommend it.
