“Private, intimate boutique hotel”
Reviewed March 15, 2013

Our group of five adults enjoyed a pleasurable stay at this family run boutique hotel of 10 rooms. Well maintained and a mixture of rustic elegance permeated the establishment. We met the three brothers and sister who manage the hotel that was designed and built by their father. They allowed us to check in at 10 am (our flight from Buenos Aires necessitated that request) and provided us with a mid-morning coffee and bread. After a day of visiting the village, with a delightful lunch at Hand of God and visit to Clois de Chacras, we decided to stay in and dine on a simple "Abendsbrot" - which the innkeeper accommodated with plates and cutlery. We visited their wine cellar and purchased two bottles of wine to accompany our bread, cheese, and fruit plates. The gathering room (lobby) is furnished with large and comfortable chairs and couches and invite people to sit and discuss their day. It is a simple, friendly, safe, and warm inn that is recommendable to those who are travelers, not tourists.

Room Tip: There are only 10 rooms that are all pretty much the same. It if it one of the rare cold, overcast...

We booked this hotel after reading all the good reviews on Trip Advisor. Having stayed there for two nights in February, however, all I can conclude is that either most of the reviewers don't have experience staying in nice places or they were all in some way connected to the establishment. The hotel, a small posada enclosed by a locked gate and in a residential neighborhood, is in the heart of wine country in the small town of Chacras de Coria, about 20 to 30 minutes from downtown Mendoza. We arrived in the middle of the night and were escorted to the room by the desk clerk. Although it was summer, the night was very cool and the room was freezing. There was no visible source of heat (later we learned that it was turned off for the summer) and there was nothing on the bed but a sheet and a summer-weight cover. We slept in our clothes and even then we were cold. The next day we asked the maid for a blanket, which improved things. The room itself was clean and very rustic. The bed was comfortable. There was no tv or phone, and while the room wasn't as small as some we've stayed in, for some reason the layout made it difficult to accommodate our two carryon suitcases. A previous reviewer mentioned a funny smell and yes, we too had a weird odor in the bathroom, as well as water spilling out the base of the sink and onto the floor. The grounds of the posada have a lot of unrealized potential. There is a swimming pool in the middle of a weed-infested mound of dirt, but we didn't see anyone swimming in it and for good reason. It was dirty and the grounds were not conducive to lolling away the afternoon, although there was a pile of cheap lounge chairs in an open shed that we could have dragged over. Where were the flowering plants and tiled fountains that exude tranquility? At other hotels - that's where. Much has been said about the friendliness of the brothers who own the hotel. One brother was there during our stay and, not to be unkind, but beyond simple courtesy, there was nothing special about the service. I think a previous reviewer hit the nail on the head when he/she said the staff "would prefer to be elsewhere." That goes for me, too.

Dear guest,

Greetings from Mendoza!

Thank you very much for your recent stay with us. We would like to clarify some of the issues mention before.
Approximately two weeks ago happened a strange weather change in Mendoza, maybe that was the problem you experienced, anyway, there is a person all night to provide all things guests can require, fortunately our made solved that issue. Although, the philosophy of the Posada is the relax, that means no TV or phones in the room, you have the possibility to do this in the lobby area.
Regarding the water issue, the water supply was interrupted throughout the Province of Mendoza for maintenance Mendocinas Water Company. Because the service is in critical condition, the EPAS (Ente Provincial Water and Sanitation) requested all people to make a responsible and rational use of water, the water is potable but may be murky at times because of these maintenance Mendocinas Water Company.

On behalf of our staff I would like to express how sorry we are to acknowledge that our posada premises and services could not meet your expectations in this time. I would like to extend our apologies for any and all inconveniences that you experienced during your vacation among us.
We will certainly take an objective approach to ascertain how best we can rectify and we will do our best not to have a reoccurrence of the situations mentioned.

Please feel free to contact us in case you decide to give us another visit.

Regards,

Berlin Family

We stayed in three different hotels in three different locations in Mendoza. This one was the most disappointing as we paid the most out of the 3 and got the least.

While the property itself is well maintained and very secure in an idyllic tree-lined neighborhood, and the rooms are clean (with the odd cobweb here and there), the overall experience was like a US motel. We stayed in a standard room with a queen bed.

It is family run and you get the feeling that some members of the family would prefer to be elsewhere. Maybe they were having some 'off' days - at the end of our 3 night stay, they seemed more welcoming.

There is limited space for luggage: a curtained niche as a closet ca. 30 cm deep, a low console large enough for a carry-on and two small wooden chairs. There is also no phone or TV, but wifi was very strong. We wouldn't mind not having a phone, except for the fact that they lock the main house at night so if you have any problems, we're not sure how you'd contact someone for assistance.

Water pressure was good, but the bathroom itself smelled like ammonia and sewage - not surprising since the draining from the sink spilled out at the base. If you don't run the air-con or at least the fan, the room gets stuffy; open windows = many mosquitoes. Also, without air, the room begins to smell of the sewage/ammonia odor from the bathroom. When we mentioned this, the owner insisted there was no smell.

However, the biggest problem for us was that you can hear your neighbors very clearly through the brick walls. We're guessing also that the reed ceilings connecting the rooms also enabled sound to travel so easily. On our last night, a crying child made it difficult to sleep through the night.

The pool is about 2 m long and looks more like a drop-in bath tub so no real swimming. Breakfast is typical Argentine breakfast.

On a positive note: while noise from neighbors is unavoidable in most of Latin America - we had to deal with pounding bass from outside the property, but the rooms are positioned in the back so that it is a bit muted. Even crazy barking dogs were muted enough that we could sleep.

Location: you can easily walk the tree-lined streets to the center of town where there are many cafes and a couple of shopping centers, but to get to more interesting parts of town, you need a car.

The brothers that run this place were so friendly and helpful that we ended up staying there several extra days. It's in a sweet, quiet, tree-lined town close to many wineries and plenty of nice restaurants. They have a pool which is essential in the heat of the summer and a great area in the lobby to hang out and eat, chat, or watch tv.

My boyfriend and I stayed here November and I have not stopped thinking about it since. After many months of jam packed hostels this was exactly what we needed. The rooms were basic but so cozy. The ac worked wonderfully and the beds were very comfortable. The grounds were gorgeous and it was so nice to come back after a long day of wine tasting and sit in the back and taste more wine from the cellar downstairs. The family that runs the posada are so helpful and eager to answer any questions you might have including restaurant suggestions that you must listen to. Do not miss dinner and tasting at Clos de Chacras!

The two oldest brothers that manage the posada are very nice and helpful and location is good. Nearby you can rent bikes to go around and you also have wineries walking distance.
However in our room there was dust on bedsides and bathtub was not cleaned properly. Breakfast was very basic.
Some noise late at night because of private BBQs thrown by owners. While we stayed there the posada was nearly empty so that may have had an impact on our stay.
