“Great mofungo!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 23, 2014

We actually ate here twice during our recent stay. We visited New Year's Eve and really didn't expect too much. We knew we were in a touristy area and it was a holiday, but boy were we fooled! We liked it so much that we returned another night for dinner.

New Year's Eve we started with a pitcher of champagne passionfruit sangria and loved it! It was sweet, but not too sweet and fruity deliciousness!! Unfortunately, they were out of this the second visit. We also had their rolls with guava butter which were wonderful. The sweet butter soaked into the hot bread and was such a treat. I would go back just for that sangria and bread and butter!

Between the visits, we (husband, me and 4 teenagers) ate pasta (both alfredo and primavera), a burger, chillo entero and mofungo (chicken, shrimp, chillo and churrasco). We started both meals with a caesar salad which was big enough for two and delicious...fresh lettuce, oven fresh croutons and just the right amount of dressing.

The pastas and the burger were exactly as expected---typical American food which is what was desired then. The chillo entero (whole red snapper quickly fried) was full of meat and quite flavorfull according to my husband. The mofungo was delicious. Mashed plantains full of each of the meats that were ordered. It was cooked perfectly. We also had french fries, rice and beans and amarillos among us. All were excellent. The beans though contained meat so my vegetarian daughter could not eat them.

Service here was excellent on New Year's Eve (we had a lovely Australian waitress that night but she wasn't working the next time). The second time the service was good, but not as good as our first visit.

The food was delicious and we will definitely go back next time we are in San Juan.

“Casual excellence, Puerto Rican style!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 23, 2014 via mobile

Came here with the family, as it was recommended by lots of people at the Intercontinental SJ hotel. It was a family of 5 adults and 3 children. This place was excellent! Nice Caribbean atmosphere, with a casual feel that made me feel like home.

Place was busy, wish is a good sign. Servers running back and forward, and you can smell in the air the different aromas of dishes on the table. We were seated promptly by a very professional hostess, wish introduced our waiter Joshua. This guy was awesome. He knew the menu, ingredients, drinks and even things that weren't in the menu. Very professional, with his own flair that helped the evening become a very pleasant one.

The food was spectacular. For appetizers we order fried cheese with guava sauce. It's very silky and melts in your mouth. The "canoa" was delicious. A sweet plantain with meat and cheese in it. For entrees we had Mofongo, churrasco steak, cooked to perfection, pork chop kan-kan, rice and beans, trifongo, and even pizza. Everything was delicious and well prepared. Must try the different sangrias they serve here. Coconut is the favorite, but the guava is not far behind. Dessert was great! Cheese flan was perfect, soft and creamy and sweet but not overly done.

This restaurant is the best in Isla Verde. Price was reasonable, food was excellent, service was professional, fun and accurate. Great time at Platos!

“What a great place!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 21, 2014

Went here for dinner for the 1st time with my son. We went to use a Groupon. The restaurant is very clean and very relaxing and had local art on the walls but not too much so as to not make the place tacky. The hostess was very nice. Our server was Orlando, he was excellent! Very polite, friendly, and knowledgeable.

Even though we had a groupon, they offered us the menu to look at, AND the server made sure to let us know that the amount wasn't our limit, we could order as much as we desired (A+ for that!!!) Restaurants that see groupons usually give very poor service because they don't expect much when that's rarely the case!

We had a bottle of pinot grigio and Orlando brought us a wine bucket on a stand and opened it tableside while answering our questions.

For appetizers we got the mussels and the piononos with shrimp. Both were sooooo delicious!! The piononos is 2 big ones (perfect to share) and the mussels brings ALOT of mussels with a creamy sauce and cheese on top (approx 15 mussels). The sauce was so good, we asked Orlando to bring bread to sponge it up and finish it! The sauce was a little bit salty but still delicious.

For entree, I had their famous mofongo with shrimp. It was very filling and good but I found the shrimp to be a little tough.
And my son had the dish called El Jibarito which was a sandwich almost with pulled pork in between two giant tostones. It brought arroz mamposteao on the side. All of it was very delicious.

We will definitely be back!

“Good for Puerto Rican experience!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 21, 2014

We were looking to eat at a restaurant servicing culturally authentic food and were pretty pleased with Platos as it was the closest to our hotel. We were eager to get a table so we took a booth in the room with four booths, but I wish we would have eaten at a table with table cloths (picky, I know), but the lamp hung so low, I couldn't see my husband and it was a bit confining! The service was extremely slow, but there was a live singer (whom we couldn't see) and that helped pass the extra long wait time. Food was pretty tasty although side was lukewarm. They were out of many items on the menu. The "canoe" appetizers with veggies was very tasty. Champagne sangria was too. It is pricey for the food one received.
