We popped in for a lunchtime meal at 1.30pm. The restaurant was fairly busy but beginning to quieten down with earlier diners leaving. (Service ends at 2.00pm which we think is too early). The locality, the decor and general ambience were pleasant. We had the lunch time special at £5.95 each and we chose 1 carvery and 1 cod and chips. Both were excellent; the cod being a good sized portion with nice crispy batter, the carvery choice from turkey, pork and beef had excellent well prepared meats and good vegetables. The lunchtime dessert menu however was too restricted offering only apple pie, bread & butter pudding, and toffee cheesecake so although for an additional £2 only we were not tempted.
All the staff appeared to be young men and although they did what was functionally required of them there was no real friendliness or attention to detail (the carvery server excepted as he was polite and very helpful). Their black tee shirt uniforms could be improved. Shirts, preferably white, would greatly improve the look and the feel of the restaurant. (remember Easyjet putting all their staff in orange tee shirts, and then reverting to more formal shirts/dress after customer feedback). Staff need to remember that their first priority should be the diners and not routine admin tasks. We were kept waiting on 2 occasions whilst staff were clearly doing accounting and tidy up functions towards the end of the lunchtime service. We would have normally rated our visit a good 4 stars because of the food, but the staff letdowns have caused us to give 3 stars only on this occasion. We plan to return in the near future and hope to see improvement in the areas we have flagged up as these are fairly straightforward management issues.
