“A nice English pub”
Reviewed April 1, 2013

Situated on the main A48 at Broadoak (Newnham on Severn) and approximately half way between Lydney and Gloucester, this pub is about as close as you can get to the edge of The river Severn without falling in or getting washed away by the Severn Bore (at the right time of the year). I have been here before, many years ago, but then, it was under a different owner. The current owners have improved it and the interior setting is a fairly convincing replica of the inside of an sailing ship. Probably more convincing at night than during the day though. The welcome is friendly and the owner very chatty and knowledgable of the area. The lunchtime menu is well thought out with plenty of options. The quality of the food is good and the portions are generous. If you like chips, these are completely different from the general run of the mill. They are light fluffy and crispy and are obviously not a straight forward cut potato. Interesting....... The final bill for three of us was a pleasant surprise, showing that the food is good value for the money and a quality you won't complain about. Definitely a place to go back to.

“Good food in pleasant surroundings”
Reviewed October 27, 2012

We visited on a Saturday evening. Very quiet but we had a nice table by the open fire. Food was good, mushrooms on garlic ciabatta to start, beef & chorizo burger with wedges to follow and orange & drambuie pudding to finish. Service was very good. Will definitely return.

“Great location, lovely staff, disappointing food.”
Reviewed September 14, 2012

I visited this pub restaurant on a busy weekend lunchtime. The position is lovely, next to the river, with plenty of seats to eat outside weather permitting.
The bar and serving staff were excellent, friendly and helpful. I ordered a jacket potato with prawns and was advised of a long wait, fair enough as it was busy.
You wouldn't think there could be much to go wrong with an order like this. However, after the long wait the potato arrived. The prawn filling was a portion of prawns with a dollop of seafood sauce on the top, not mixed together as you would expect . On cutting into the jacket potato, it had obviously been microwaved, never a good sign. And in this case, over-microwaved, with several brown inedible burnt areas. And the salad garnish had been dressed with vinegar - I didn't mind this too much as I like vinegar, but it was very odd!
Sitting outside, no-one came to ask me if the food was okay. I took the plate back inside and discreetly showed the waiter the burnt parts I'd left. He was apologetic but that was it.
I've still rated the venue as four stars although my food wouldn't have rated more than one or two stars, because it is so pleasant and the sfaff are excellent. But I would be wary of ordering anything more elaborate if such a basic meal wasn't up to standard.

“Great food well priced”
Reviewed June 16, 2012

Great food well priced. Just out for a drive on a wet day in Gloucestershire when we passed the White Hart over looking the river Severn. So popped in for lunch. Nice little find Carvery's from £7.25 only a small choice of veg but all very nice. Seatting was a little cramped but clean and tidy. Staff were all friendly and will to help.
For 5 Adult inc drinks total bill came to £ 55.15. Were're looking to go back to the Forest of Dean when the sun shines and again will call back to The White Hart. 5/5
