My husband and I had a fabulous time at Heacham Manor, we went with my sister (who is recovering from a life threatening illness) and brother-in-law, so this time together was very special to us. We couldn't fault the hotel in any area, the rooms were beautifully clean, the extras provided such as Crabtree and Evelyn toiletries were a lovely thought, milk in flask everyday, white towels and bedlinen, excellent quality. The staff couldn't have been more helpful, anything you needed they provided always with a smile, they worked so hard and the team work showed. The food was excellent and the dining room overlooked the golf course which was lovely. We would highly recommend this Hotel and will stay again. Can I just say a big Thank You to everyone who works at the Hotel for making it an unforgettable stay. You do get what you pay for and I know this is slightly more expensive than some other Hotels but well worth it, being off the main road made it incredibly quite which was perfect. Thank you to my lovely Sister and wonderful tour guide brother-in-law for the best holiday we have ever had.

We arrived to a warm welcome. I pre booked flowers and chocolates for the room and as we entered they where positioned in front of the window, which bought a big smile to my partners face, the 4 poster ben was amazing, extremely comfortable. The bathroom was very small and getting into the shower proved a little difficult as you had to step over the toilet!! But was all decked out lovely.. Dinner was a la carte and was absolutely brilliant, compliments to the chef.. The ambience was so romantic while we slowly worked our way through a very tasty bottle of Rose wine. Breakfast the next morning was lovely also, although my 1 gripe would be only that it was a very small portion for an English breakfast and it took a very long time to arrive after we ordered it.. All in all, I would love to go back in the near future and would defiantly recommend this place to anyone wanting a romantic night away.

Background

The hotel is privately owned situated near Heacham and the A149 road. It lies off a minor road adjacent to the A149 and next to a golf course.

The hotel’s accommodation consists of rooms in the main hotel and cheaper ‘standard’ rooms in converted outbuildings described as the cottages a short distance from the main building. There appeared to be four blocks of these. Each block seems to be divided into 3-4 units each comprising of, I believe, 3 standard ensuite rooms.

At the time of making our booking the hotel was unlisted but when we arrived a 3 star AA grading had been achieved.

Booking

The hotel has its own website which has quite a bit of information about the hotel. However we found the website a bit difficult to access the information as the links did not seem to work very well – to view the rooms you have to access the booking link. We could not access the restaurant dinner menu,

We received prompt e-mail messages regarding our enquiries and confirming the booking, having made the actual booking by phone for a 6 night stay in a standard room.

Arrival

We arrived early evening after a long and not trouble free journey and were looking forward to a relaxing meal in the restaurant, a reservation for which we had made during the course of our telephone booking. We were somewhat annoyed to find there was no note of our booking and that the earliest we could be fitted in was 8.30 pm which was much too late for us.

We were not shown to our room but were directed to where our room could be found. The room which was newly completed did not have any telephone to reception and we found that there was no soap with the toiletries and only one hand towel had been provided for me and my partner. We had to walk over to the reception area to report this.

Location

The hotel is in a quiet rural location. On our first night we heard an owl! Being away from the A149 there was hardly any road noise from this main road.

There is a nice duck pond adjacent to the cottages, some garden and further ponds adjacent to the golf course.

Heacham itself is about a mile away and Hustanton about 2 miles away.

We found the A149 to be very busy at peak time with very long queues. If travelling around in the locality it is as well to bear this in mind and either go in the opposite direction or stick to the minor roads.

Room

As referred to the above we paid for a standard room which appeared to be bigger and more modern in styling than some of the rooms situated in the hotel. We chose a room in the latest block to be built (block 7) as the upstair rooms do not have the sloping ceilings of the earlier built blocks and which we thought might cause a height problem if you are tall.

On the whole the room was well appointed, the bed was large and comfortable and the shower was of a high quality. The hospitality tray includes a flask of fresh milk and bottled water.

The particular room we had, had windows open both front and back which allowed for a through draft which was handy as it was quite hot whilst we were there. Looking from the outside not all rooms would have this feature due the structure of the cottage layout.

There were however some minor gripes – things that you would not expect from a 3 star establishment:
• There was no welcome pack in the room to give instruction on how to use the shower in the bath and the sink plug or about the hotel itself / local attractions.
• There were no fire instructions on what to do in the event of a fire (I believe this is a legal requirement).
• No luggage rack.
• No phone (we understand that these are to be installed later).
• The hinges on the doors were creaky and in need of a dose of oil.
• Specialist teas drunk from the tea/coffee making facilities were not automatically replenished.
• The shower rail was only fixed up by suction and fell down.
• No grab rail in the bath.
• No sanitary towel disposal bags in the bathroom.
• On the website it states that bathrobes are provided for standard rooms but this was not the case.

As noted above the standard rooms are situated away from the main hotel and restaurant (where breakfast is served). If it were to rain you could get quite wet going to and fro. It could have been a nice touch is each room had had its own umbrella for the trip between.

Cleanliness

We found the hotel to be very clean.

Food

Breakfast was very good and if sitting in the conservatory you had a good view of golf course.

The hotel appears to have more rooms that places available in it restaurant. As the hotel appears to be in the process of opening more standard room units this issue needs to be addressed as there are insufficient covers at breakfast time.

We cannot comment on the restaurant itself as we decided after our first night reservation had not materialised not to eat there.

Staff/Service

We found the restaurant staff to be friendly and helpful.

The same cannot be said of the service on the desk on the day on our checkout. Having already explained that I needed to take my sick partner to A&E in Kings Lynn there was a problem in getting an outside line to pay our balance by credit card – apparently only 2 lines were available and one was being used by a customer and the other internally by a member of staff. After waiting 10 minutes for a line to become free I had to suggest to the receptionist that perhaps she could ask for internal phone call to be terminated so that I could get underway – I would have expected the receptionist to have taken the initiative to do this.

Value for Money

Having indicated that we would be looking to make a booking for 6 days we were disappointed that the hotel did not offer any discounts for longer stays. We did manage to negotiate a small discount as a result of an e-mail offer that was subsequently sent to us. Fortunately we took the e-mail confirming this with us to the hotel as it was missed from the final bill presented for paying.

The booking section on the hotel’s website, when we reviewed it, appeared to be misleading in regarding the optional extra for dinner. At first glance it seems you get the whole dinner for £25 – only if you hover the mouse over “choosing this option” is it explained that the £25 is only an allowance towards the total cost of the dinner.

We cannot praise this hotel enough. I spent a while trying to find some last minute accomodation to take my husband away for a surprise birthday treat and what a gem we found. From arrival to leaving everything was fantastic. We had booked room 11 which is delightful with windows overlooking the golf course to the side and the rear of the property. The bed, which were two singles zipped together, although you would never know, was massive with beautiful crisp white bed linen and extremey comfortable. The little touches like the home made biscuits and fresh milk in a flask are delightful. the whole place has been verytastefully decorated in keeping with the traditional manor house which it used to be
We went to the bar for an early evening drink, and yes I agree with other comments that perhapes the lighting is a bit harsh, no need for the centre lights to be on and the sofas could be a little more soft and squishy, but the atmosphere was very relaxed and the service excellent.
As for dinner, well this is were things really excelled. The menu was amazing, I can safely say there was nothing I couldn't have eaten and making a decision what to have was the hardest part of our stay. The food surpassed all of our expectations, it was outstanding and beautifully presented with excellent service, one of the best meals I have ever eaten.
After an excellent nights sleep we had breakfast which again was of a superb standard.
This really is an excellent friendly hotel and if you can't stay the night then make an effort to have dinner. I can safely say you will not be dissappointed.
Will we return........definately and we only live 30 miles away,

Room Tip: Room 11 was beautiful

We first spent a weekend at Heacham Manor last August Bank Holiday and had a fantastic time. The hotel has its own golf course which whilst not championship standard is still very challenging and fun - we played the hotel course twice and then played Hunstanton just 10 minutes down the road. We enjoyed the visit so much we spent the royal wedding weekend back at Heacham with some friend for a another golf trip.

The staff looked after us very well, the hotel is of a great standard and the restaurant is superb, combine this together with three days of golf and it was another excellent stay. We will be back.

We stayed at this hotel as a break to take my parents away for a relaxing Break at easter. The welcome and service was very good and the whole time we were there nothing was too much trouble for the staff without the sevice being intrusive. The help at reception and within the restaurant be it at breakfast or the evening meal was to be commended and I would recommend this hotel to anybody looking for a break within the area be it business or pleasure, and if you like or play golf that must be a very big plus as the course was immaculate.
