My wife, 2-year-old daughter and I booked eleven days at Casa de Esteiró, attracted by the quirky charme of the photos on google images. And we were not disappointed. This is a very special, caught-in-a-time-warp kind of place, enchanting and lovely. We stayed in a spaceous apartment with a terrace overlooking the (very usable) pool. My daughter loved the gardens, the romantic coy pond, our bike tours (even a child seat was provided) through the pine forest connecting river and sea beaches, the wonderful staff (and Filomeina in particular!). We loved the unique atmosphere, stunning rooms and environs with art and tasteful antiques that reflect the life and spirit of Jose, or Mr. Ambassador, as he is respectfully called by his people. This place may not have the mod cons of a five-star hotel, and it doesn’t aspire to. But it exudes authentic style. For us it was the perfect refuge to unwind and forget our everyday lives.

We had a very nice three-day stay here in April. The property is a former hunting lodge in a secluded location, walking distance to the town but also near the beach.

Very nice breakfast in the main house, which has a real old-world charm, it feels like taking a step back in time to the era of the country gentleman. Breakfast includes eggs, toast, jam, juice, coffee. Some fresh fruit would be a nice addition.

Attractive suites, big enough for a family or a couple. We enjoyed preparing a few meals in the kitchen.

Great hospitality from the host, Jose, a former diplomat who speaks perfect English. He seems to really enjoy meeting and talking to visitors. He even gave us a lift to the station when we departed.

The staff were also really good, especially Mena who who went out of her way to help us with a few things.

There are a few nice portuguese-style coffee shops on the main square.

There are lots of places to walk to in the surrounding area. You can also go on a day excursion to Spain, just a short ferry hop over the river. Unfortunately the ferry service seems to be a bit irregular in the off-season and tended to stop early in the day so we didn't make it over.

We would definitely go back to Casa de Esteiro if we have the chance to.

Stayed in the studio for 5 days and it was a total disappointment. Based on the house's website we were expecting charm and comfort but didn't find either.
The studio had 2 beds with very worn out mattresses which were uncomfortable and smelly. To eat, we had only an old gambling table with a broken leg and two benches. Never mind the outside table because it was dirty and full of spider webs. Everything else on the studio was old and dusty.
On the outside, the spaces that probably once were pleasant to sit and have a picnic on were now invaded by plants and dirt. None of the plants on the gardens/wood were taken care of. The access to the studio itself was made by a narrow track, on which was difficult to walk, even more carrying luggage.
Breakfast was just OK and, although the staff provided what we asked for, they didn't seem pleased to receive guests and we didn't feel welcome inside the main house.
Overall, it seems like a place with a lot of potential to be a small charming inn close to the beach, but it needs serious attention and renovation, besides more welcoming hosts.

Mine host, a former diplomat, rents out accomodation in the delightful grounds of the family county house. We had ten days in the Studio & it was delightful. A few minutes stroll from the river estuary and 20 mnutes into the village centre there are ample places for eating.
Just be aware that the entrance into the property is narrow & I wouldn't have wanted to try it in a large car

We stayed as a family of 4 in an apartment with a terrace overlooking the pool. This really is a delightful place to stay. The host is a real gentleman and serves breakfast in his dining room which is full of exquisite antiques - breakfast is really a treat! The property is walled and is within easy walking distance of Caminha which has lovely restaurants and cafes around a central square. The beach is over the road from the property and is 5 mins walk where there are bars and restaurants. There is a ferry over to spain and we did a short trip to Galicia which is also very beautiful. The area has a small amount of tourists but does not seem to have many Brits - a pleasure if you are one!!

We stayed in the studio for 10 days and we liked it very much! The gardens are very beautiful, like a real jungle with enormous trees and the pool is great to have a swim in every day, since the water in the atlantic ocean is very very cold! Caminha is a lovely town, not too touristy with plenty of nice café's and restaurants and a very nice central square. We didn't have a car and that was just fine: it's a nice walk to the centre of town and there is a train station (senora da Agonia) very near Casa de Esteiró, so it's easy to visit for example Viana do Castelo and Valenca do Minho or even Porto. Also you can walk from the house through a lovely forest right to the beaches of Foz do Minho or you walk through the forest (or along the beach) to Moledo or even to Ancora Praia.
The hosts are very friendly and helpful and breakfast was excellent in the very interesting dining room, a great place to start the day.
So we very much recommend this place if you would like to experience the real Minho life!
