It was the first stop on the way from the airport in Rome to our Toscana vocation. And we were not disappointed ! Very good food ( pasta ,meet and other) , great ( their own ) wine and olive oil ( by very fare price) . The service was also great, the owners are very friendly and speaking not bad English , so we had a perfect lunch.

I've cycled Tuscany on a few occasions and was looking for 'a quick bite at lunch' on my way back in thru' Asciano before the afternoon rains arrived. Stumbled on Conte Matto, tucked at the top of a steep hill, around a corner, and through an arch -- and on may way out of this lovely town. Directed there by a teacher in the school opposite, I wasn't entirely convinced that I'd even made my (restaurant) request clear. View is great from the terrace. Menu is good and varied (dinner looked even better). Can't speak to the wine -- another 40 Km precluded sampling that part.

We have been visiting this area for over ten years and probably have eaten here at least 25 times. It is a family owned and operated restaurant in town, with great food, wine and service. It is probably the best value in the area. Their pasta is cooked perfectly, try the pici and to gnocchi. The main courses are very good, lamb chops is our favorite. Their wine list is well-priced, the house red at 7 euros is a nice table wine from a near by Colle winery. And the service is excellent, even when crowded. You cannot go wrong here.

We have been to the Conte Matto a couple of times for dinner and whilst it is not bad it is a little disappointing. the last time we went there were groups of cyclists who were apparently on an organised tour and, as to be expected, they were noisy which made it difficult to hear what we were saying to each other at our table. The picci was good but the lamb chops supposedly pink were very well cooked. The restaurant was largely patronised by foreigners (not Italians).

I have eaten at the Conte Matto many times and I keep coming back for more. This is the classic family owned and run Tuscan hilltown restaurant and its deserving of all the writeups and accolades. The service is personal and the food is creative and fresh. Most of the little restaurants in these Tuscan villages serve great pasta but the secondi and dolci are not always as good. Not so at the Conte Matto, where the main courses are outstanding and worth indulging for. The ambiance is very nice as well, quiet and classy inside and more lively out on the patio with the lovely views of the Crete SInese. Lunch is very nice but a long, slow dinner at the Conte Matto is a special experience. The prices are in line with most of the other small inns and restaurants in Tuscany. In fact, most of they are priced around the same which is very interesting. And if you drink too much of their great house wine they have lovely rooms upstairs. You don't want to drink and drive down these narrow streets.
