Owner description: Castello Sonnino is one of the few untouched dwellings in Tuscany and is strategically situated in the village of Montespertoli : only 20 km from Florence on the ancient and beautiful Etruscan road to Volterra . It is part of the Italian Historical Dwelling Association ( ADSI ). Castello Sonnino, which previously belonged to the Machiavelli 's , was purchased by the Baron Isacco Sonnino at the beginning of the 19th century , is composed by different architectural structures, where the oldest parts are the XIII century Tower and the Chapel ( now one of the Castle's apartments ) .The main building , the " Villa " , dated from the XVI century still contains the historical Archives of the Prime Minister Barone Sidney Sonnino with all the documents regarding the First War World , the Treaty of Versailles and his Library. Castello Sonnino is now the home of the Baron Alessandro e Baroness Caterina de Renzis Sonnino . In the premises it's also located an Enoteca with a Restaurant which is open everyday from 9 am to 8 pm . We daily offer wine tastings with tours of the Winery included the monumental cellars, light lunches, dinners, and tours of the Castle and the Tower. Better to book in advance. Starting from Spring 2014, besides the flat in the Tower (2 double bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, living room and kitchen), we can offer to our guests more accomodation in the newly restored apartments of the Winemaker and Farmhouse. Both furnished in the local country style of last century, using only antique furnitures coming from the old rooms of the castle. In the Farmhouse: three bedrooms, two bathrooms, very big kitchen with big old fireplace, and sitting room. Large private garden where is possible to relax in the shade of the Tower. The Winemaker apartment: three double bedrooms with three bathrooms and kitchen. Terrace with breathtaking view of the Montespertoli valley with the Sonnino vineyards. In front of the terrace is the old "Aia" of the winery where is possible to relax and enjoy a great Chianti sunset.

We received a recommendation from our local host to lunch and enjoy a wine tasting at Castello Sonnino. We were not disappointed. Our hostess Frederica was charming, the dining room in which we ate was perfectly Italian, the food was incredible, and then she brought the wines! Wow!!!! The luncheon began with a beautiful white wine, continued through several reds, and finished with grappa and biscotti. After lunch, Frederica took the four of us on a private tour of the winery. She spoke in English and was very knowledgeable. We even met the baroness. This is a must do if you are anywhere near. Did I mention how delicious the food was?

My family and I visited Castello Sonnino in our way to Florence. It is 30 kms. away from Florence.
Our guide, a young lady from the US, and our kind host Federica, made our visit very pleasant.
The guided tour was in English and included clear, interesting, basic information about the processes to produce different kinds of wines.
Also we visited the cellars, where we appreciated the change of temperature and humidity.
We did wine tasting of four different wines and our guide explained the reasons for the different flavors. We visited a real Castello!
After our tour and wine tasting in Sonnino we had a gelato in a genuine Tuscan village, Montespertoli, where we appreciated the way of living of a village without the high influence and rush of tourists.
We were there on a June afternoon; the countryside view was unique, with grape plantations and olive trees.
If you have a free afternoon while you are in Florence don´t miss this delightful experience.

On the recommendation of our hotel we did the wine tasting and "light" lunch at Castello Sonnino. We sampled seven different wines and had a great lunch for 25 euro. Excellent presentation, cool setting and an excellent tour of their wine-making facilities.

I stayed at Castello Sonnino in June and had an amazing experience. I enjoyed artisan lunches and incredible wines alongside exquisite views of the Tuscan countryside. The estate is full of rich history that can be seen in the original winemaking practices that have been utilized for hundreds of years in the Tuscany region. Federica, who works in the shop, is extremely knowledgeable about the wines and the history of the castle and estate. Be sure to visit the vinsantaia (where they make their sweet wine)!

The winery is family-run and if you are lucky, you will have the opportunity to meet the owners, Baron Alessandro and Baroness Caterina de Renzis Sonnino. They are extremely passionate about their business and will be delighted to tell you all about the vineyard.

Castello Sonnino offers wine tastings and light lunches with bruschette, a selection of meats and cheeses, and a pasta dish. If you want to have lunch, it's best if you call ahead to make a reservation to make sure they can accommodate you (+39 0571 609198).

If you have the time, you can also stay in the castle! Here is the website with information: http://www.castellosonnino.it/en/living-in-the-tower.html.

Do not miss out on their award-winning wines and tours of the castle and tower. I recommend Castello Sonnino to anyone who wants to have a true experience in Tuscany with excellent hospitality.
