“Underrated Little Gem”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 26, 2011

As a fairly regular visitor to Passo Tonale I've have stayed at several of the hotels in the village. Previously we've gone on package holidays so the choice of hotel has been down to sticking a pin in a tour operator's brochure. This time though it was a self-arranged expedition and with the help of the local tourist office, we booked a week at the Albergo Angelo.

The hotel is located right in the centre of the village, a couple of hundred yards from the main lift pass office and slopes. We arrived quite late at night after a stressful drive up from Bergamo but the staff were exceptionally friendly and welcoming and made us feel at home with panini and a drop of wine.

The rooms were on a par with other hotels we've stayed at in ski resorts - not particularly large but very clean, well decorated and with lots of storage space. At the side of the hotel there's a separate room which is kept locked (you have to ask at reception for the key) where you can store your skis\board and boots.

As a non-meat eater, I've been left rather unimpressed by the offerings of some of Tonale's other hotels (pasta with tomato sauce every night for a week, as one example) but the menu at this hotel always had a couple of veggie options available. The quality of the food was also a pleasant surprise, especially the desserts!

We were there during the last full week of the ski season so the resort wasn't particularly busy. As a bonus though, we got free lift passes thrown in with the price of the hotel room. We tended to socialise away from the hotel in the evenings and dropped lucky by finding a couple of 'locals only' end of season parties.

Summing up - out of the 5 hotels I've stayed at in this resort, Albergo Angelo isn't the biggest or most expensive but overall, it's probably the best. I can't understand why more tour operators don't have it as a package option.

It is a family run hotel, with a very pleasant team. The service is excellent and the rooms are very nice (recently refurbished). There is also a SPA (sauna, turkish bath, jacuzzi) for extra fee, but it's worth every penny/cent. The food could be healthier :o) (I put on some weight during my stay...)
I gave 4 for location (it is not so close to the chair lifts) and 4 for the rooms (I needed some more hangers/towel racks in the bathroom). But this is nothing in comparison to the warmth the staff treats you. Just one example:
We were 6 people staying at this hotel, and we left at 4:20 in the morning. One of the staff members woke up to let us out and waved us as we departed. In comparison, somebody from our group stayed alone at another hotel and he had to sneack out through the back door, nobody was around to let him out. At another hotel, it was pitch dark and again, when the small group left, nobody from the staff was around.
This is a hotel where they really know how to welcome guests and they practice genuine hospitality.

In stayed in hotel Angelo at the beginning of the ski season. our room on the top floor was completly new and very beutiful.the whole village is quiet and so was our hotel most of the time: you can here people talking in the hallway but when they enter their rooms it is quiet again.
The hotel was full on that week. You get a regular table in the dining room and any wine or water you order wait for you on the table the next day. The staff was very nice and helpful. The food was nice most of the times, but a little disappointing, because I expect a lot from Italian cuisine .
The walking distance to the ski slopes is reasonable (like all the hotels in Passo Tonale) .
