Perfect location and perfect resort. Our sea view room was excellent. Beautiful view from the terrace and surrounding gardens. Wonderful bar terrace where we could sit and watch the sun set, looking across at the islands and watching the boats float by. The staff were very friendly and attentive in the bar and at reception.

Recently stayed here for 3 nights...it should have been 4 though. When we arrived the gentleman on the desk explained that he could not check us in and he needed someone else to do it, when i saw two members of staff coming to greet us I knew something had gone wrong.
We have booked through expedia (no cancellation, pay up front) according to the staff who were at the hotel they had not received our booking until the day before and they were over booked for the night.
Wasn't happy obviously. We were offered rooms in one of their other hotels, including higher star ratings, but they were either another 60km drive away, a shuttle from the beach or so remote you needed a car to be able to go out for dinner, non of which we were happy with - our requirements where 1, on the beach & 2 to be able to go and walk around in the evening and eat in different places. Eventually they said the issue was the one night and we could stay at the hotel across the road "Mon Repos" and come back the next day which we agreed.
So the porter was called, he was handed the car keys to transport us to the hotel to which he had a shouting match with the management - it appears he felt it was a waste to take the car and we had to walk, now it was only 5 minutes up the hill but by then we were pretty hacked off, hot and not impressed.
We stayed the night at the Mon Repos, which I will do a report for and then came back the next day.
The hotel, yes maybe needs redecorating in places, the dining room mainly is very tired but the rest of the hotel is charming. The bedroom was a good size, bed and pillows were very very firm and everything was very clean. The bar area and gardens, grounds etc were lovely. There are lots of steps and narrow pathways so would not recommend this for people with mobility issues.

The beach was very small, disappointing and only had chairs and not sunbeds so we went around the corner to the rocky areas to relax for the few days we were there. yes you had to be out there no later than 8:30 to reserve your beds. The other thing i didn't like is the sellers who came around constantly trying to sell their goods, i expect this on a public beach but not on private property. Really annoying.
We only had breakfast at the hotel and it was fairly rubbish to be honest, the bread and pastries always seemed to be overdone and dry and there was never any variation. The breakfast at the hotel Mon Repos was far superior.

Also just to say if you go to the public beach which was just lovely be prepared to pay a lot for sunbeds. On the day of arrival when we went to the beach at about 2pm we were charged 20euros for 2 sunbeds....the afternoon rate! Hate to think how much it is for a full day.

We stayed at this hotel on our first family holiday with our thirteen month old son.

First off, the hotel is exactly what you'd expect in Italy - it's traditional. I disagree with other views who said the hotel needs refurbished - it's a typical Italian hotel and in my opinion, not in need of refurbishment.

We were really impressed with the food. Always a good choice on offer at breakfast and dinner and the restaurant staff were all really pleasant and were brilliant at entertaining our son during meal times.

The pool areas were lovely, but the water is freezing! We didn't really sit around the pool much as it was a very quiet atmosphere - not really suitable for an excitable baby!

There are a lot of stairs around the different pool areas, so not suitable for pushchairs. However, the hotel isn't that big so it was fine to carry our son around those areas.

There's a lovely beach which the hotel sits on - not the softest of sands, but the views are fantastic.

Just a five minute walk from the hotel (and down a very steep hill) you come to the centre of the resort, with nice chilled out bars, restaurants and shops. If you're eating out, I'd recommend the Baia Blu for lunch / dinner. Excellent food and service - and if you're a tiramisu lover, you've got to order it in this restaurant, it was sublime!

The main beach in the centre of the resort is a good size, nice soft sand and you can hire boats / arrange boat trips from here.

The only downside to the hotel was the amount we were charged to hire a cot - 40 Euros per night! The rooms aren't all that big either - but as Sardinia is so beautiful, you don't want to be spending that much time in your room anyway.

All in all, I'd definitely recommend this hotel and the resort - great food, great staff and great weather!

We stayed in this hotel for a week in September. Yes, it is dated and in need of a re-furbishment but the wonderful views make up for this. The staff were very efficient and kind. In spite of what other guests have said, we did have to bag our places around the beach or pool - something we could have done without. The food was adequate - we are not big eaters so could not manage all the courses. The beach cafe was nice but the menu could have been bigger.

Room Tip: Sea front rooms have wonderful views of the bay.

Fantastic place, great location, close walk to the little town which is a bit newish and contrived so no old town but very nice nonetheless. Rooms are beautiful and south facing sea front balconies worth every penny.

Room Tip: Frontal sea view or side sea view but rooms at back have poor aspect so pay the extra.

This is a decent hotel with a very convenient location. The rooms are clean and the private beach and breakfast selection are excellent.

The only downside is that the bathrooms are too small and it would have been nice to have a safe in the room.

Another point to note-Do not book any maddalena excursions or snorkelling through the hotel as these are very expensive. There are several maddalena excursions available at the public beach for half the price. For snorkelling go to proteus diving school located in the main square, 30 euros and excellent instructors.

There are several restaurants close by, all quite good aside from skipper and news cafe.

You will need a car to explore around as there is no public transport.

My wife and I stayed in this hotel for 5 days in July 2012. reception staff are generally nice and helpful. Some cannot speak English but you can always find someone who does. Entrance to the hotel is lovely with lots of flowers and beautiful garden. We had a sea-facing room with a balcony. Rooms are simple but very clean. One criticism is that the mattress was very hard and I found it uncomfortable. Bathroom are very clean and there are plenty of storage.
Pool are and the sea are very nice and quiet with no children running around screaming, which was very nice and relaxing. You can always find a little corner for your own.
Restaurants and food are very good and we enjoyed it a lot.It is very close to Baja Sardinia if you want to eat out with plenty of choices.
You must rent a car and go around specially Porto Cervo. Beautiful place!
Overall very good hotel. We would definitely go back and I totally recommend it. Thank you Grand Hotel Smeraldo Beach for a very relaxing and unforgettable holiday.
