Sixth visit in Villa Arcadio made me to rate it. This stay convinced me that the place is not a dream. More like a dream come true.
The hotel of less than twenty rooms used to be a monastery and is now run by a Finnish lady Jaana. She´s a real cosmopolitan who can chat with you in several languages and creates the tranquil athmosphere around the house.
The whole style of this hotel is carefully considered and built with good taste. And quality, for sure. The decor is not really ”a decor” cause it looks very much like been there for ages, still not being antique. I see it like a mixture of Scandinavian cool and the warmth of Northern Italy.
Let the matron tell you more about the history of the building and the surroundings. The magnificent lake view you will experience right on your arrival. The same scenery you can admire straight form the pool too.
There are also ancient frescoes carefully restored. Found some even in my room once. Try to spot a tiny picture of a sleeping hunting dog somewhere between the floors. And say hello to the shushing angel at the staircase. Someone of the staff told me that the whole monastery-hotel was originally reconstructed around this little marble statue.
The rooms are of average size and intimate, don´t wait for ”grand salles”. Bathrooms are spotless and polished, to my eye they´re built with craftmanship. Found no bathtub though, pity...
After admiring the lake-view from the room couple of times I hired a tiny ground floor room with a green balcony. Also very peaceful.
A decent and modern restaurant is there, also to lunch in a splendid terrace. A healthy breakfast is provided. It´s been served for me even I´ve sometimes been late.
The whole haven is situated on a hill-side about two-three kilometers from the pittoresque lakesidetown of Salò. In a good weather it´s a pleasure to stroll down there on foot. But at nights and in a bad weather the transportation is a problem. It´s tiresome to try to get a taxi from Salò. The owners of the hotel have promised to help you with this unnecessary problem.
During my stays I´ve been guided to a lemon farm, to a cheese factory and to a nature park. The staff is willing to arrange such trips for you, as well as short cruises by wooden Riva-boat on Lake Garda. With extra charge, of course.
Villa Arcadio is easy to reach by car (through Milan, Verona, Pisa or Bergamo), but little bit more complicated if you´re travelling by train like me. Ask beforehand from the hotel for somebody to pick you up e.g. at the Desenzano-station. If you´re lucky it will be Jaana herself.
