“Lovely Hotel, great staff and good food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 6, 2013 via mobile

Just returned from Salo and loved this hotel. We had really good food and wines throughout the week we stayed and dined here and all the staff and management are delightful. The hotel and in fact Salo itself is spotlessly clean. The hotel is perfectly situated to the boat jetty to visit other lake side towns and Salo has a huge programme of evening entertainment throughout the summer season, including Happy Blue Hour which is live music events throughout the town on Thursday evenings.

Duomo hotel has a perfect setting - about 10 foot steps from the edge of the lake - the bedrooms were quite small but we only slept in them!, we had a side view room from which we could see the church square and the great queues for the ice cream parlour, even at midnight they were still queuing. Basic continental breakfast, 3 course evening meal.
The owners - she was a bit distant/ moody -" you were in her house" he did just a little bit more than nothing, whilst the head waiter was rushed off his feet all the time.
There is no pool as advertised, it is a small Jacuzzi, and a terrace with about 6 sunbeds.
Would I go back - without a doubt - salo is beautiful and the nicest resort I have been to on Garda.
The best place in the world for people watching, when the Italians come out at night they really really love themselves, it is an eye opener.

Room Tip: Lake view room are fabulous but are you going to sit there all day, we were only in the room in the...

At the promenade of Lago di Gardo in the old town of Salo. Be sure to get a room towards the lake. The hotel is OK but not spectacular. The rooms are a bit small. The food in the restaurant quite OK. Price/value also good. Car parking is a 10 min. walk away. But you can drive up front to deposit your luggage.
If you are looking for a park this is not the place. Stones only!

We booked last minute through Hotels.com for 110 euro for a triple room, as we'd decided on a Lake Garda stopover on the way home from Tuscany. It might be worth paying extra for a lake view, however we visit a few times a year, so it wasn't essential for us.

Our room was a double with a zed bed for our child. This did make the room a little cramped, but there was plenty of wardrobe space, a flat screen tv with Sky movies etc and a writing desk. The bathroom had obviously been upgraded and was spacious and well fitted. It was a shower cubicle, not bath. The room overlooked the back alley, which was quiet and shaded.

When we booked this hotel the facilities listed a pool. Infact there was a hot tub, on the roof terrace with sun loungers overlooking the lake. So please take note - there is no pool. The jacuzzi is very pleasant, was empty when we went, and is a few steps form rooms on the second floor. However the hotel provides towels for some public bathing areas along the lake you can walk to, and swim. We enjoyed an evening in a lakeside bar, provided with sun loungers and snack menu, whilst our son waded in the lake. Shoes for the pebbles are recommended.

The hotel is small. It is off road, you have to ring a bell at the traffic lights and ask them to drop the bollard so that you can drive up to the hotel on the lake front. Once you drop off your baggage, you then have to negotiate the tiny roads (full of tourists milling around) out of the town, and park 10 minutes walk away. A parking voucher is provided for free, however I think there are timings around entering the car park.

Reception were very friendly. Unlike the table staff at breakfast. He seemed very stressed and not too happy to provide hot drinks with your meal. The usual selection of continental breakfast buffet - pastries, bread, cheese, meats, cereals, juice. They also had an egg boiling device and toaster that were slightly hot and lethal.

However we enjoyed a good breakfast, and the best part was that you could enjoy it on a small shaded front terrace overlooking the lake with spectacular views. A great way to start the day!

We didn't eat dinner at the hotel, we ate one night at a fantastic place on the square, I think was called Daddy's. Great menu, stylish place. Behind the hotel in the church square is THE most amazing Gelateria. People were queuing to order. Choice and quality were amazing for the price. I'm not a huge ice cream fan, but this place was outstanding.

Overall we enjoyed the hotel, it was peaceful, clean and good value for money.

We adored Salo, and would definitely return.

Room Tip: If you like to be hotel based, then I would recommend you request a room with doors onto the terrace...

Hotel location was exceptional, on the promenade at Salo, less that 100 metres from the town square and Ferry Terminal, ten paces from the edge of the Lake.
Dining a few paces from the Lake watching the promenaders and boats on the Lake made a very relaxing time. Do not expect speed at Dinner, you are in Italy on a different pace, we were Full Board and the selection on the menu was quite good. The sheltered sun deck on the first floor was very hot in August of this year.
Our room was at the back of the hotel, a reasonable size very clean and well maintained by the staff....tempted to go back.

Room Tip: If you want to look out over Lake Garda, a balcony room at the front is a must

We were staying in Salo for our wedding, Hotel Duomo is in a great location on the promenade with amazing views across the lake, we found the rooms with lake views to a good standard, the staff were extremely freindly and helpful we would recommend this hotel, we did not eat in the hotel due to the great choices available all within a short stroll.
next door, i would recommend the choice of 64 different pizza's, sit outside service was great.
for a more intimate or formal evening meal, Osteria De Orologio, less that 3 minute walk from Hotel Duomo offers great food, wine and service in a great atmosphere, during the day we lunched at Don Pedro, along the promenade with great views over the lake, very relaxed but helpful and freindly staff, all at very reasonable prices.
if you have never visited Salo, it is a wonderful small town with a very upmarket feel without being commercialised

We stayed at the Duomo, Salo in July 2012 for one week. The hotel bedrooms/bathrooms have been re-furbished to a good standard and the hotel is located in a very good location. Salo is slightly off the main Lake Garda tourist track and therefore a little quieter than some of the towns around the lake. I would certainly consider returning to Salo in the future.

Upon arrival and departure from the hotel we were treated with the bare minimum of courtesy, something that is unfortunately all too common in Italy. None of the staff or the manager thanked us for visiting the hotel or wished us a safe journey home, even though we were sat waiting for 45 minutes for our early morning transfer.

The restaurant, which gave excellent views across the lake was let down by terrible service whenever the head waiter was absent. I agree with the other reviews which commented about him being very overworked and that he struggled to provide the service that he obviously thought to be reasonable. I was surprised that he has remained at the Duomo. The manager/owner appeared to be more interested in attracting non-guests to eat at the restaurant, at the cost of treating residents as second class customers. The half board menu was limited and didn't change throughout the week. I would certainly recommend anyone staying at the Duomo to eat at one of the numerous restaurants in the town.

We booked our holiday through Inghams but we had the lasting feeling that the Duomo have spent money on improving the hotel and do not really want package holiday guests lowering the tone but cannot afford not to have them.

Room Tip: Lake side rooms on the top two floors are best.
